At present 40 people use the visiting library service to access library materials and information. Monthly, 400 items are circulated to patrons who by age or infirmity cannot use the library in person. Lynda Hardy, the visiting library service assistant, has been employed by the Ajax Public Library Board for the past four years. The last three she was involved with the distribution of library materials through the NI -q. Lynda visits patrons at Ballycliffe Lodge, Harwood Manor, Ashley Manor and in individual homes. Visits are made once every two weeks on Wednesday or Thursday mornings. The visiting library service can distribute books from the library's regular collection, large print books for the visually impaired, magazines, books on tape, and community information. Video tapes from the library collection may be distributed by the VU, but must be returned to a branch library within four days. For those with special needs, arrangements can be made to receive talking books from the THANK YOU The Management and staff of The Bay News would like to take this opportunity to thank the business communities of Pickering, Ajax and surrounding areas for their tremendous support in helping us produce our first 80 page edition. The library received the grant (which was matched from library funds) last year. Staff have been busy buying and processing more than 800 books and videos for their popular multilingual collections. 'The grant was unusually welcome this year because of our tight budget situation,' said chief librarian Sandy Cameron. 'These collections have been enormously popular since the Central Library opened. It has been difficult to meet the increased demand.' New materials ordered include Arabic, Chinese, Gujarati, Hindi, Panjabi, Spanish and Urdu. The library board plans a special program later this year to showcase its collections in languages other than English and French. $1,000 reward offered in Brougham robber, in - Crime Stoppers and Durham Rection Police robbery squad are asking for the public's help in solving an attempted robbery which occurred Jan. 12 in the Village of Brougham. Plan Montessori school in Highway 2 building A plan to convert a vacant commercial building on Highway 2 to a Montessori school received its first step in approval this week from Pickering council's executive committee. The building is one of several parents and staff from the Montessori learning Centre on Toynevale Road have assessed. explained the Centre's founder, Nicole Phillips. She told the committee the Highway 2 site is preferred for the centre to move into next year. Planners expressed concern about the school's proximity to Highway 401 and adjacent land uses. But executive committee approved a change in Official Plan and zoning to make the school possible. Councillor Kip Van Kempen said he was annoyed the Toynevale school started operating without proper zoning and expected all regulations would be met this time. Better parent -teenager relationships workshop Being a parent of teenagers is not an easv task - especially nowadays! Today's concerned and sometimes bewildered parents have an increasing interest in finding effective ways of relating to their teens. Improving relationships between parents and teenagers will be the focus of an 80 - session parent study group starting April 22 at Pickering High School. Living with Teens offers a realistic and sensible approach to improving family relationships. Through reading, activities and discussions parents learn effective ways of communicating with teens and they are able to share their concerns with other parents. Living with Teens encourages mutual respect between parents and teenagers, and leads to increased co-operation and a more responsible, self-reliant attitude. The cost of this study group is $44 per person. For information about this or any other study groups offered by the Family Education Resource Centre of Durham House in their spring program, call 686- 4353 or 579-2021. Attwood was quite content >' with how she earned her living. She loved real estate and being more or less in control of her own time. So when her best friend, Laura Cole, came up with the bright idea of starting up a charitable foundation, Margaret was pretty easily pulled in. Her hours were flexible; she could help out around the edges. "1 thought she was getting in over her head, to be honest," says Margaret. "I thought it was just too big an undertaking. I knew she would need help." Little did she realize just how much Laura's vision would change her life. It had started simply enough. Laura, an Ajax housewife, had seen a TV documentary based on the Make A Wish Foundation of America. But when she called to ask how she could help, she discovered she couldn't: no such service existed for terminally -ill children in Canada. Laura decided to start her own. She went on to submit a presentation to government for a charitable licence. The Children's Wish Foundation of Canada was born. 'I'm still amazed at just how large we are," says Margaret, "and that it was Laura who did it." Close friends all through grade school, all through high school; of all of us who chummed together, Laura was the least likely to start something of this magnitude," she says. This year, Laura, now national executive director, received the B'nai Brith Council's woman of the year award. Margaret is going into her second year as director for Ontario. Initially, Margaret volunteered to assist with the paperwork and administration from Laura's home office so Laura could be free to go out and do fund raising. "But I told her 'I don't want to get involved in public speaking or speaking to family members'," she says. She soon found herself speaking to groups. By 1986, Margaret had moved from Scarborough to Pickering, to be a little nearer. And as her dedication to the cause began to match Laura's own, she found herself spending less time on real estate and more on making the wishes of dying children come true. Along the way, The Children's Wish Foundation saw a wish of its own come true when office space at 1730 McPherson Court was donated. Filled with photographs of happy children — at Disney World or L71t ar-+es -once Margaret Attwood meeting with celebrities — Margaret's office is a constant reminder to her of what it's all about. It tells why she abandoned her real estate career to work night and day to keep the miracles happening. Iler own daughter Aprile, now a mature 21, Margaret feels free to spend long days working on administration and evenings out talking to groups or meeting with families. A staff of three works nationally, with volunteer chapters in each province. "By keeping, the Fuld staff and other overh,!ad down. %,,- arc- ahl,- to spend 97 cents of every dollar we earn making wishes happen," she says. Having just passed the 2,000 wish mark: "We're the largest Canadian foundation granting children's wishes." To qualify, the wish child must be between the ages of three and 18, and be diagnosed as either terminally ill or having a high-risk, life- threatening illness. Those who do not qualify are referred to other foundations which exist to assist the chronically ill. The wish must be the child's own. While most request a family trip to Disnev World, some wishes are as simple and inexpensive as meeting .Madonna when she is in town. or owning a new tricycle. But always there is a sense of urgency: most wish children die within the year. N'olunteers are always needed. Croup fund raising ideas can be generated. Call Children's Wish at 831-9610. "We've just barely scratched the surface of all the terminally ill children out there," says Margaret sadly, "and no, you never really reach a point where you get used to it.' She smiles wistfully as she adds, 'This is not a job you can just walk away from." 'I looked like a lady. Usually feel Usu y I f I like a Or]? This is Bernard's first look at herself in Lady Against the Odds (airing Monday, April 20, on NBC). The movie is a period piece, set in a Philip Marlowe-esque Los Angeles of 1943. Bernard plays Doi Bonner, who, along with her best friend, Sylvia Raffray (played by Annabeth Gish), operates a detective agency. Bernard, who also plays Helen Chappel in the NBC Thursday -night series Wings, has never before seen herself dressed in anything but contemporary regalia. 'I love the'40s!' says Bernard. 'Everything was just to lovely then! People just didn't speak their minds; they held their tongues. Facades were put up. Today's actors just put their cards on the table right away.' 'Everyone in old movies seemed so moody and fabulous. It's really interesting. I did get a real good fed for the en — it was 50 years ago, you know?' In the movie, when heiress Sylvia's rich guardian, P.L. Storr (played by Roy Thinnes) is found hanging from a tree, it's Doi who becomes the chief investigator of the crime. The murder suspects range from P.L.'s slightly daft widow (played by Polly Bergen) to a shadowy con man (played by Steven Flynn) who's blackmailing the widow, to a hilariously seamy gossip columnist (played by Dan Castellaneta, who supplies the voice of Hower on The Simpsons'). Most of the main characters are extremely wealthy. So the movie was filmed in mansions all around Beverly Hills and Bel Air, Calif. 'Who could afford to live like this?' Bernard asks. 'Certainly not anyone anymore!' Bernard says she got the role be 'NBC is really good about using its (series) sun in movies. Dal's a really strong character, and that's one of my traits. Certainly on rings, I'm kind of strong and feisty and angry most of the time.' Doi, Bernard says, is an unusual woman. *She's up against a lot, being a working woman in the '40s, getting no respect in the workplace. All the am were away, fighting in the Second World War. Before Dot's boyfriend went to war, he asked her to take over the agency.' The Pickering store at 1050 Brock Road opened in December. It joined stores in Willowdale and Mississauga to extend the company tradition. "Customers were really pleased," says David S. Cubitt, president. "They told us they had been driving in from Ajax and Pickering to Gordon Baker Road (in Willowdale)." The philosophy behind the company was evolved in Cubitt's basement. Partner Bill Birss and he, both music lovers, mulled over different concepts for providing music to the public. Warehousing techniques with low overhead became the target. But the first move was to develop a mail order business. At various concerts and shows flyers were put on car windows. A 1-800 phone number was supplied. It used to be that resin patio furniture was only for the rich. But now it comes in a wider range of prices. The fact that this furniture is now made domestically, instead of being imported from Europe, has cut the price of certain models of chairs and tables by half. Did you know that for a set of resin patio furniture, you can pay as little as $200 or as much as $12,000? It's hard to believe, but it's true. You'll see sets that are lacquered in black and white and you'll swear that they are made of marble or Italian wood. But in fact they're made of resin. The name resin is really just a new word for "plastic" but it sounds a lot nicer and more elegant. There are around 3,000 types of plastic. As with all plastic materials, the synthetic resin base is made with a petroleum derivative commonly called polymer. There are four types of polymers that can be used to make synthetic resin: polystyrene, polyvinyl chloride (PVC), polystylene, and polypropylene. The best resin is made of polypropylene and talc - Resin patio furniture has the advantage of being resistant to the sun's ultraviolet rays, and that prevents it from turning yellow. It doesn't rust or rot either, so it's perfect patio furniture. Resin furniture is molded and comes in a wide variety of shapes that you won't find with steel or aluminum furniture. Certain manufacturers add nylon to the resin to increase its flexibility, especially in top of the line furniture. You can also buy furniture with a lacquered finish that doesn't allow dust to set and keeps its original color for years. Whether your furniture is of resin, metal or wood, there are many factors to consider in choosing it, like the color and the amount of deck space. True colors are more suitable for smaller decks. If you have to move your furniture often, make sure it is light and rainproof. If you eat outside but you also want to keep an area for relaxing in the sun, have two groups of furniture arranged so that there is still enough roan to move between them. A chaise longue takes up around 12 square feet, not inck>ding the space required to moue around A. A round table for four, including chairs and room to move, takes up 100 square feet, a table for two with chairs, 40 square feet. When buying your furniture, make sure the colors match so that the set remains harmonious. Choose your patio furniture with as much care as you would your inside furniture. After all, in summer, you'll use it just as much. Two coverings are recommended: "textilene" pads cost around $40 each and are very much in demand, mainly because of their endurance and resistance to food, suntan lotion, wine, or chlorine which won't stain the cushion. There are also pads that come in "dralon" (polyacrilic) that looks like cotton, and is nicer to touch but less water resistant. They cost around $100 each so it's recommended that you bring these pads inside at night. It's now becoming quite common to see parasol lighting fixtures attached under the crown with an electric rubber wire. This option alone costs between $150 and $200 but, when you have company on those warm July evenings, it's very pleasant!
