FINDING A NEW LANDFILL SITE:
THE NEXT STEP
Uhe search for a new landfill site to serve the residents of the Region
of Durham is a difficult job. The provincial government has estab-
lished a government authority, the Interim Waste Authority (IWA), to find
three environmentally -suitable landfills to meet the long-term waste disposal
needs of the Greater Toronto Area, which includes the Region of Durham.
The search began last August when the IWA released its first document
outlining the proposed criteria for the site search. During the public consul-
tation period, the IWA received wide-ranging views and opinions about the
planned process.
Following public comment, the IWA is now releasing the revised criteria
prior to the preparation of any long list of potential landfill sites.
Called Revised Approach and Criteria (Steps 1-4), Supplemental Criteria
(Steps 5-6), and referred to as Environmental Assessment Document II, Part
1, this document includes additional and new criteria. It is now available to
the public for a minimum review period of 60 days. It contains:

Royal Roaders dispute

Residents of Royal Road were
appalled, angry, sick and
frustrated when they found out
last week Pickering council
without consulting them allowed
changes to a hotel complex
being planned on their
doorsteps.
About 10 of them appeared
at Pickering's executive
committee this week, three as
delegations.
They said they were
particularly incensed because
their Region Councillor Rick
Johnson told last week's meeting
he was consulting with them,
and he has not.
Councillor Johnson asked
residents to accept his apology
and arranged a meeting with
them this week.
Last week council voted to
allow three roads from Royal
Road to the hotel -senior citizen
complex, where before there
was only one.
At that meeting, Councillor
Kip Van Kempen spearheaded a
campaign to have residents
notified of the change. But it
didn't happen.
Then this week, residents said
a mystery person shoved papers
into their mailboxes —
photocopies of the proceedings,
with Rick Johnson's telephone
number scribbled on them. Van
Kempen denied having anything
to do with stuffing the
mailboxes.
Any changes to the
development have to be
approved by site plan
committee. Planning Director
Neil Carroll said this could
happen within the next two
months.
Councillor Johnson said that
the incident was blown out of
proportion, but if the residents'
meeting justified it, he would
consider reconsidering last
week's decision.

Passive and this was labelled as feminine. I remember the reaction
of disgust amongst myself and others at the thought of jabbing your
fingers in an attacker's eye.
Dirty
I always thought of that as fighting dirty. I know an attacker has
no mercy on a victim, but my attitudes remained the same on this
issue.
The number of women that attended dropped a little each week
This fact is dismaying.
Those women had a chance to take a course in self-defence for
one hour a week (five hours in total) for free, and they couldn't afford
the time. An approximate total of 50 women were missing by the
last class.
Felt good
For the first time I was the aggressor. The feeling was strange and
unknown — but liked. As the classes continued, l felt more confident
when practising.
It is a great feeling inside when you Inas you are not useless and
helpless.
Every new move held reluctance. But when you practice the .
moves, they become more natural.
In those five weeks we were taught how and where to hit (groin,
solar plexus, knees, throat, eyes), block a strike, flip an attacker,
escape a rear attack, where to stand in an elevator — and more. We
learned "positive personal development".
Disgusting
It is disgusting that a majority of Canadian women won't leave
their homes at night to walk to the store for fear of being attacked.
Women don't have to be victims any more. You do have a choice.
Karate -do classes are not to be feared. Being unable to protect
wffself is.
The instructor told me that women can be harder fighters than
men. But most important is that, "You cari t rely on anybody else."
Power
I know five sessions won't make you impenetrable to an attack.
But I feel better knowing I am not helpless.
Self-defence courses give you a sense of power and teach you how
to be in control. The experience is not only worthwhile, but is
becoming a necessity in survival.

amount of money for community purposes —
and put it where it's needed. They supply an
almost endless stream of energy, expertise,
talent, brains and experience to community
endeavors.
One of the most outstanding examples is
Pickering Rotary pub. Almost unbelievably,
with hardly a dozen members by all accounts,
this club is the driving force behind the
gloriously wonderful local annual music
festival to the benefit of what most be
thousands upon thousands of children so far.
The public benefit is immeasurable.
There are the same kinds of heartwarming
and beautiful stories about every service dub
every year!
This area is blessed with a whole plethora
of service dubs. Of course, there are ararrtr
other dubs and organizations of a business,
professional, special interest, and social
nature, etc., that make a great community
contribution. Brit the service dubs might be
described as the "shock troops" of the
community's betterment forces.
The reason for mentioning all this is the fad
that our three southwest Durham Region
towns expanded vastly is the immediate past.
So much so the population has about doubled
since the present cornpiement of service dubs
was formed

to its core complement of about 20 drawn

Years of stormy debate by Pickering Beach
residents over the idea of introducing sewers to
their neighborhood may be water under the
bridge, thanks to a proposal by Region Councillor
Roger Anderson.
During an &day Ajax budget meeting April 11,
councillors endorsed a plan introduced by
Anderson, to forego building storm sewers in the
south Ajax community. Instead, the proposal
suggests proceeding with sanitary sewer
construction and recactstivttion of area roads.
Originally, the area was being considered for
storm and sanitary sewer service construction
through an 11 -year project

The fust year of the proposal would have cost
the town more than $500,000 for its stare. The

Recently, Durham Region agreed to dedicate
appradmately $300,000 for the first year of a
sanitary sewer construction program in the area.
Residents will be required to pay a hook-up cost of
appradmately $4,700 per lot.

and rejects the notion of introducing more of them
into Pickering Beach.
"His (Anderson's) proposal appears to be the
,most reasonable at this time," she said
"This problem isn't going to go away. If we

Ward 5 Councillor Pat Brown, the local
representative for Pickering Beach, was the lone
dissenter. She rejected the plan, suggesting more

Duster is spirited motoring at reasonable cost

Back in the old days, mention
the word duster and immediately
the thought of household chores
came to mind. This was
something to be avoided at all
costs, unless an amount of
pocket money was involved.
In the last month or so the
word Duster has taken on a
whole new meaning, especially
in the motoring world. Chrysler
of Canada has introduced its
latest sporting offering which
they market under the title
Plymouth Duster.
Based on the familiar
Sundance body which attracted
a large following in Canada, it is
available in two stylish
configurations. One is a 2 -door
model with standard 2.5 -litre
engine. The other has a V6
3.0 -litre under the hood.
Both come under the
category of sporting saloon, a
car aimed at the family person
who wants power along with
family accommodation. This is
a hotly contested sector of the
market with many
manufacturers offering units
which are attractive.
Village Chrysler in Ajax
loaned us a Duster for a test
drive recently. The first
impression of this vehicle
showed its close resemblance to
the rest of the Chrysler family.
The 2 -door vehicle was
painted in bright white with
snatching sports wheels and
spoiler. The interior decor was
grey with cloth seats, air -
conditioner and a good quality
am/fm radio -cassette player
A 4 -speed automatic
transmission was fitted to the
3.OL engine. Duster decals on
the hood made the public aware
of its sporting pretentious.
Safety was well taken care of
by the kxkisim of a drimes-side
airbag, front wheel power disc
brakes and speed -rated tires.
On the road the Duster
handled very well, both on the
highway and on the back roads.
The well -tuned suspension made
the handling and stability a
Pleasant experience. It created
an air of confidence throughout
the test period.
What makes this car stand out
from other manufacturers'
vehicles in its class? It's a
question which crosses
everybody's mind when
contemplating purchase of a
new car.
Well, the answer is quite
simple. It's the lovely smooth
V6 engine which Chrysler mated
to this successful car.
It's a willing powerplant which
can propel the car up to the
legal limit without the fuss or
strain often encountered in
smaller units. The result is a
satisfying drive combined with a
smooth ride, not only for the
driver but for a family of four.
On the move, the 4 -speed
automatic transmission makes
effective and slick gear changes.
This results in a relaxing journey
in heavy urban traffic or out on
the highway.
The test vehicle was also
equipped with a tachometer,
plus power -assisted rack-and-
pinion steering. All the
instruments were clearly visible.
The controls were easy to use.
The designers kept everything
simple, logical and right at hand
for the driver.
Another burning question in
the mind of a potential
purchaser is the cost. Not
everybody can afford the high-
priced imported performance
vehicles and their high
maintenance outlay.
This is where the Duster really
scores. It offers high
performance and comfort at a
reasonable cost.
The prices start at $10,650
for the 2 -door model equipped
with the 2.51- engine, and rise to
$13,595 for the 3.OL model
with options as tested. To
sweeten the deal, Village
Chrysler is offering the choice of
a $1,250 rebate, a 7-
year/115,000 km warranty, or
a 3-year/160,000 bumper -to -
bumper coverage.
This adds up to an attractive
deal on a hot car that has lots of
power, charm and personality.
The next time the word Duster
is mentioned, don't think of
household chores, just think of
spirited motoring at a reasonable
cost.
