SERVING DICKERING - AJAX - CIRCULATION 349,700 - EsT. 19111 Pickering -Ajax mainstay Hospital administrator for 34 years By Dan McLean Few people would have predicted a long and rewarding career for Ken McInnis when he arrived at Ajax and Pickering General Hospital in 1957 to tackle the tough job as hospital administrator. Certainly past history at the time seemed overwhelmingly stacked against the odds of a fruitful stay. From 1954 to 1957 — no less than four different chief executive officers and four administrators came and went through the seeming revolving door of the local hospitals top administrative office. So who would have expected him to become the 34 -year fixture he has? "You never know how long you're going to be somewhere," McInnis admitted in a recent interview. "Ive always liked the area and always liked the hospital." 'I have to be quite honest — rve new applied for another job." Ontario record? Now at age 64, McInnis is a month away from retiring as, unoffici*, the longest serving top administrator of any hospital in ;he province. He's philosophic about the timing of his announcement. Its a changing of the guard, as it were. "It's not that I couldn't continue on, but somebody else should have a chance," he reasoned. "1 feel mandatory retirement at 65 is not a bad idea, just so somebody else gets a chance at the job." 'rm as good as I was 10 years ago. But its time somebody else took over." Originally a native of Stratford, Ontario, McInnis came to the Ajax and Pickering hospital after answering an advertisement for the administrators post. He'd spent four years in the business office at Kingston General Hospital from 1954. Hectic - The timing of McInnis' arrival could not have come at a more hectic time. ConstrWion of a new hospital — which was eventuoliy completed in 1%4 — was still on the drawing board He recall the = } era as his most rewarding and memorable time during his tentue. :1 ?o get the experience, from the ground up, and being involved in every area of the hospital construction, is an exciting tune," he said. l As armor, McInnis is directly respons We for the hospdal's overall operation and answerable to the 19 -member board of directors. Administrator His work days begin at 8:15 a.m. and usually end around 6 • From Page 1 Initially, McInnis dabbled in virtually every aspect of the hospital's administrative operation. His fingers were firmly gripped in such areas as personnel matters, purchasing, accounting and preparing the payroll. But as the hospital grew from a staff of 50 or 60 to more than 680, everyone's job became more specialized. McInnis' role changed to more that of an overseer — delegating as much as he could in order to assume p.m. McInnis walks the 10 - minute trek to work each morning. He exercises at the recreation centre during his lunch, five rimes a week. Up until a year ago, he was an avid jogger. But arthritis eventually made the workout unbearable. At home, McInnis' family includes his wife and three daughters — two who still live at home. He married at age 29 and his firs; daughter arrived in 1960. In 1972, the coupie adopted another daughter. Then there was another unexpected arrival in 1973 when his wife became pregnant. "I was well into my 40s and had two children in diapers at home," he recalled with a laugh. "I probably paid babysitters longer than anyone else in Canada. I paid from 1960 till these kids were 14 years of age Plans McInnis is a self -described contact sports fanatic. He enjoys watching hockey, boxing and baseball in particular. Stili, despite his announced retirement, he won't spend his V0x POP FORUM (Town Hall Style Meeting) - with Rene Soetens, M.P. FSC teacher pay stalemate continues Durham Roman Catholic Separate School (Board and its 292 secondary teachers remain at odds after the board's rejection of the latest contract proposal by teachers. During a meeting Feb. 19, trustees unanimously rejected a revised 2 -year deal proposed by the OECTA Durham Secondary Unit. In a press release, the board argued the proposed salary increases by the teachers would add an additional 15 per cent. Classroom teacher maximum annual salaries would have risen to maximums ranging from $59,344 to $64,714 annually if the board had agreed to the increases, the release stated. Improved working condition costs would have amounted to more than $300,000. However, in a press release from the Durham Secondary Unit, teachers called the board's projected costs misleading and incorrect. Salary increases at actual cost to the board would amount to 5.1 per cent and 1 per cent over the 2 -year term, W the teachers. Rejected op A Of The teachers say the board has now rejected all attempts at a compromise and have not offered a revised proposal of their own. The board has refused to meet and negotiate, arguing it is up to the mediator to call both sides back, say the teachers. In retaining a hard-line stance on salary and staff issues, the board said local taxpayers simply can't afford to pay the costs. Grants The province's education ministry announced transfer payments for 1992 will increase by only 1 per cent in 1992 and only 2 per cent in 1993. Substantial increases in taxes would be required to meet the teachers' demands, the board press release said. The boards negotiating team is expected to meet shortly to determine future steps to resolve the labor impasse. There are nine outstanding issues in the current labor dispute, according to the teachers union. The teachers have staged a work -to -rule sanction since Jan. 13. yA SALE! Kitchen Court in Pickering is a good example. This family- owned business started four years ago. It is opening a new location three times larger than the present one. The business is moving from a Bayly Street store to the attractive Pickering Home Design Centre off Brock Road, north of Highway 401. "It's a re -location," said owner David Courtney. "But nothing from our old store is coming with us." "We feel the business we're doing now is fine. But we would like to expand." The Bayly Street store will remain a discount clearance location for a year. Another Kitchen Court location at 266 Eglinton Ave. W in Toronto has been extremely successful, Courtney said. The new Kitchen Court store at Pickering Home Design Centre boasts 3,300 sq. ft. of showroom. It will be managed by Cautney's brother John and his wife Mary. David and wife Alexis Hoffman manage the Toronto store. The Kitchen Court specializes in redesigning kitchens. "Our designs are not just cabinets on the wall. We try to be unique," Courtney said. "Well do everything from the floor to ceiling in a kitchen." "And one of the owners of the business is always there to help from the start of a project to its completion. You're not just passed from pillar to pillar." The installation work is performed by certified carpenters who work exclusively for Kitchen Court. These aren't just handymen, Courtney said. "They're of the highest quality. It's something we've maintained from the start." He says that while Kitchen Cant workmanship cost may be higher, the work itself is only done once because it's done right. Kitchen Court will work closely with its Design Centre neighbor Peter's Appliances to make redesigning the most important room in the house — a one-stop affair. .If the appliance you want isn't on, display in the showroom, then it's just a case of walking next door," Courtney said. The quartet of owners boast a wealth of related experience in the trade. Courtney is a certified carpenter. Brother John is an electrician. Alexis has been in the kitchen design business for 15 years and has built a solid reputation. "Her knowledge of the industry is second to none," says husband David. Business hours at Pickering Home Design Centre are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. from Monday to Wednesday and Saturdays, and from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday and Friday. P40 itexeriPull' L wbraary - of n Picture books bring life i e of Africa to children By Anne Dean, assistant head Pickering library children's services Africa is the original homeland of about 100 million Black people who live in the United States, Canada and other countries of the Western Hemisphere. An understanding of the African culture is increasingly important to all of us living in this multi -cultural country. Picture books can help young children understand another way of life. Long, Iong ago — so the African folk tales tell us — there were no stories on earth for children to listen to. They all belonged to the Sky God. But Anansi, the Spider man, wanted to buy some. How he paid the price is retold in the picture book, A story, a story by Gail E. Haley. The original African tale, Awful Aardvark by Mwalimu, telk how the aardvark learned to sleep by day and eat by night. Moja means one: a Swahili counting book, by Muriel Feelings, gives not only the Swahili words for numbers, but snippets of information about African life. The illustrations, though not in color, are very beautiful and show the number of the objects discussed in the brief text. A happy day 1 am eyes is by Leila Ward. In Swahili "ni macho" means I am awake, but it says "I am eyes". This very simple book with bright pictures shows all the lovely things a small girl sees in one happy day. To the Masai, the planet Venus is known as Kileken, the orphan boy. The orphan boy by Tololwa M. Mollel explains why. The name of the tree by Celia Barket Lottridge is a reteilirg of a Bantu folk tale. When drought spreads throughout the land, a single tall tree becomes the animals' only hope for survival. But to reach the fruit, one must know the name of the tree, something which is known only to the lion. The animals send messengers. But they forget the magic name before they return. Who is going to save them? The most unlikely messenger of all, the tortoise, saves them. This is because he remembers what his great -great -great-grandmother taught him. From South Africa comes the story of Abi)oyo, the terrible giant, retold by Pete Seeger. The exciting story of how an outcast boy and his father save the town is illustrated with large pictures in glowing colors. From South Africa Hugh Lewin was born and grew up in South Africa. After serving a prison sentence for his opposition to apartheid, he moved to England, where his two children were born. For them he wrote the Jafta books. All six follow the same format — double -spread pictures that wrap around the text in warm shades of gold and brown. Each story tells about some aspect of Jafta's life in an African village. More stories of African village life are told by Ann Grifaiconi in Osa's pride and The village of round and square houses. These books are illustrated by the author in rich colors that giow, with the warmth of Osa's loving family. The ne plan is to sell primarily beer, he wine and some hard liquor only ee. as a convenience to members — oze and not as a tavern -type enterprise. "It's strictly for our members to enjoy the environment where they do their sport shooting," Paul Perrault said. "The 'average Joe' coming off the street can't participate in shooting." Safeguards Club members include professional people like doctors, lawyers and police officers, Karen Perrault said. Many other I shooting ranges across the province are allowed to sell alcohol to chub members. Karen Perrault herself is a certified shooting instructor. She has a permit that allows her to confiscate a firearm. Members who have been drinking are not permitted to use the shooting range. They must also keep their firearms under lock and key in the trunk of their vehicles once they've finished their target practice. Objection However, despite cautious assurances, Anderson — an ex - Durham Region police officer — still objects to the proposal on principle. "I have no problem with the operation. You are more than qualified," he told the Perrauhs. "But for us to make it any simpler to get a drink isn't appropriate." "I said it before and N say it again — guns and alcohol don't mix. There's nothing here that says it's (the liquor licence) imperative to the continued -success of the business." Ajax Mayor Jim Witty was among those who, based on new information and discussion, reconsidered his decision. Witty said the supervision at the shooting range provides better security than anywhere else someone with a weapon might ,decide to have an alcoholic drink.
