receiving subsidized child care. By
this September the waiting list had
grown to 860; almost predictably, the
number receiving subsidy remained
unchanged.

prepared to increase its budget,
.region government, it seems, was not
prepamd.to provide its necessary 20
per cent. Government*, feeling the
pinch: often prefer to ignore statistic,
such as these; alarms sounded by
.mild care professionals usually fall on
deaf ears.Child care has very low
priority.

Education (ECE) as a career know*

result of low pay and limited

One woman, however,has managdtl
to beat the odds. MaryLynn West-
Moynes, manager of child care
operations •t Durham College, has
not only managed to find funds. In
May of this year she receivfd one or
this country's top awards for

'What really thrillcd'me about
this,' says. Starr Lynn, 'is that
childcare is finally being recognized
— and in the leadership category at
that. This has never happened
before. There need to be quality
"programs for children. And that's an
orient issue which needs- to be
addressed.'
Originally from Wawa, Slary Lynn
always aspired to be a teacher. A
graduate of the University of Guelph's
child -studies program to 1977, she
ahered-her career.direclion during a
summer spent at school with
children's authur and atolYteller
flobert Munch.
In an effort tp become more
involved in pre-school, she joined
York University's co-op program. 'I

learned there how important it is to.
have co-operation between parents
and the school,' rhe says. 'Ahd 1

A year spent in England -on
teacher's axchange with her high
school leacher husband introduced

methods. Additional training
followed an her return -to Canada.

centre in AJ'aa, working{ with

from pm -school to age 18. •
In 19U, Mary Lynn was involved in
'opening the fins schoolhouse playcare
centre. These control, which operate
out of the Durham Board Education
school"s, now -number 14. MoryL,ynn
site on the board for these control.
