EDITH PEARS Correspondent FRENCHMAN'S BAY — A fire which gutted the store of Morley Black at Liverpool Corners, on Sat- urday night, was a very unexpect- ed event. Mr. Black had closed the store wluch is located 'at the corner of No. 2 Highway and Liver- pool Road, better known as French- man's Bay Road, and gone over tQ his house the neat door. west onNo. 2 Highway when Mr. Smith of Glendale Road knocked at the door to tell him the store was on fire. The Pickering and west Picker- ing fire fighters both responded to ce call and did a very good fob onsidering the coolness of the night. There was a freezing north wind and with -the temperature around the zero mark it was very difficult to keep the water sup- ply from freezing. One tank of water when brought back from Pickering had to be thawed out before it was of any use. The fire started shortly after 8 p.m. and seemed to originate in a shed on the west side of the, store. There was a battery chargee in there but whether that hac> ::ate thing to do with'starting the flrr is not known. The shed .arta' "upper part of the store apd roof seeamd to be the main location of the flames althou¢h the whole piaee was full of sirwhe. The firefighters di,;-,crve a lot of credit for the splendid. job they did whilRwsirlt ing under such dlffficulty, Had the. fire ever got a start in all pro•: bability the buildingson the east side of the road would likely'lifiW gone too. Mr. Black is building a new store and had hoped to be moved lato It long before nova but has been held up for plate glass. There was some insuranceon the store so it will not be a total loss to Mr. Black who has `had 'tbe store at that corner for a number of years and is very well thought of by the residents of the -surround- ing territory. The gas tanks were alright, which was a lot to be thankful for but the Black's home was without hydro until a tein- porary line could be strung up by the .hydro men. Ralph Smith of the Glendale sub -division, across the road gave the alarm when he saw flames coming from the building. The store building, of frame con. struction was literally packed wit'i merchandise. iTro,, Black said_ the loss would be difficult to estimate. She gave particular'cre. dit to the OPP and Pickering Po- lice Force who had a hard job keeping traffic moving on No. 2 Highway. Neighbors rallied to sup- ply coffee to the near frozen fire- men, whose clothing was still fro- zen from the fire earlier in the -af- ternoon. Firemen from Pickering Village brought their equipment to the scene and worked with the W-st Pickering Department in the zero cold. Several times it appearad tua the fire was ,under control when it would break out again with renew- ed vigor. Dense smoke made it difficult for the firemen to reach the seat of the fire.
