The shades of night were falling fast As thro' our Pickering village past, A sleigh well filled with ladies fair, And others. ---names I must forbear. For Greenwood bound they drive along, And All the w.ir with laugh and soug. Away o'er roads bedecked with snow, Away o'er hill and dale they go. But presently the snow banks rose In billows white their way V oppose; The horses plunge from bank to bank, When lo! exhausted down they sank. - The ladies leaped from out the sleigh And o'er the snow banks took their way; Like fairy forms they cleave the air, With hearts undaunted, free from care. From bank to bank they sped in glee— A novel sight it was to see. We soon regained them on the road, And towards Greenwood onward strode. With hearts elate, with courage true, We did our devious way pursue. Arrived iu Greenwood, oh the sight, That did our eager eyes delight 2 Tables spread with choicest food, Refreshing tea, the pastry good. In mind and body thus refresh'd After the trial we found sweet rest, After the storm came sweetest calm, After the wound the healing balm. But brighter scenes await us still With joy our hearts to feast and fill, Am to the school house off we go, There to hear sweet music flow, The feast of reason, flow of soul, Which moves the heart and minds control, Was there in rich abundance found, And poured in fullest measure round. Hyfield. the Greigs, and Jewell bright, With charming songs beguiled the night; Wiemer, Claris, and Craushaw, too. O'er lyre and horn their fingers drew, While Edie .Vurray with her art, Thrilled and 'thralied the youthful heart. The hours on golden pinions flew— Not one their journey there did rue. The moral of our tale is seen, From it some lessen we may glean. This human life, we've acted o'er As first we leave youth's peaceful shore Troubles dark beset our way, But as we journey, dawns the day, Brighter grows the path we tread, Brighter skies shine overhead, Brighter hopes our souls inspire. To lure us onward, higher and higher, Until we reach the Feast above, Where a'I is joy, and all is love. --ONK OF Tilt PARTY. Pickeriva, March 2nd. GREENWOOD BOLLER MILLS Fe L. GRRRN, PROPRMTOR. Mr. John- ston is undoubtedly one of the formost importers and breeders of shorthorns in Canada, and as such has gained for him• self a reputation throughout this continent. The magnitude of his business cannot be properly estimated until a visit to his herd is made.
