SQUADRON Charter Day - July 14th Frenchmans Bay After many set backs and delays the day got off to a flying start with the arrival of the R.C.K.P. cutter Shaunovan II, under the command of Corporal Casselmen and his crew. The next boat to sail into the Bay was the Decibel II from Toronto carrying John Burkholder and Commander Bob Mitchell of the Toronto Power Squadron and his friends. After one unsuccessful attempt to make proper anchorage they finally came ashore with their crew. Ceremonies started with a magnificent display by the Ajax Pipe Band. In the meantime poor Commander Moore and all the Squadron members were trying to find out who had the Charter, when into the Bay sailed Vice Commander Gordon Proctor of the Canadian Power Squadron with the Charter in his hands. The Charter was presented by Vice Commander Gordon Proctor to Commander Moore on behalf of the Squadron members. The other officers in the Squadron were also presented with their private flags by their own Commander Moore. They then took a salute to the official raising of the Squadron flag, which had been previously presented to the Squadron by Commander Moore's mother. The flag was made by hand by Mrs. Moore. The flag pole had been hastily erected by Squadron members that morning, on top of which is a red lamp to help guide yachtsmen into the Bay. By this time quite a number of district residents had appeared at the scene to watch the ceremonies. The R.C.M.P. took all those present on a conducted tour through their new boat. Next on the programme came a life saving and life ring throwing demonstration presented by Superintendent of Toronto Harbour Police, George Regan and one of his able assistants. Refreshments were served by the Squadron for all those present after which all the Squadron members went aboard Lieutenant Commander Rodda's boat to drink a toast of success to the Squadron. A very noteworthy fact about Squadron members is the great deal of time and effort they have put forth to make all activities a success. r T t raj 1 r t r= a ---saw POW t, WNW 01 i _ . Later in the afternoon there was a demonstration of fire fighting equipment, and the raising of the squadron pennant. The pennant was raised by Alfred Adams as the pipe band played in the back- ground. Numerous boats of all types and sizes were moored to the Scott docks during the afternoon, many of them coming from Toronto. A highlight of the day was the Invitation to tour through the new RCMP cutter. This boat which will tour the lakes this summer carries a small boat powered with a 10 h.p. motor. The smaller boat tours the bays and harbors and checks on power craft to see that they are licensed and carrying the proper life saving jackets. They also check on overloading of pas. sengers, fire , fighting equipment,, fast driving and uiniwt.everythin; pertaining to safety while boating. The new RCMP boat drew ad. miration from the crowd. It is equipped with ship to shore radio, radar, office, berths, kitchen and torage holds. The officers pointed ut the various features of the new boat, built this year, and explained their work. Members of the power squadron have been studying seamanship all winter and have passed the exam. inations hequired.
