Banes Genealogical Chart on the Descendants of William Bagshaw and Sarah Bolton Settled in Canada 1817 Compiled 1933" " Introduction SOME years ago Mr. Abraham Bagshaw, son of Abraham Bagshaw, Uxbridge, conceived the idea of making a family tree. He worked some time but the tree grew so tremendously that it was not completed. Mrs. Annie Banes who with Mrs. Eva Mclintock started the family re-union picnic has now compiled records of this genealogical tree. " " D. E. R. 1933 Built about 1830 Second home of Bagshaw family, Lot 5, con. 9, Brock Township. Built 1830, in use until 1878, torn down 1890. This house was built of round and hewn logs, there being a difference in tax rate of hewn log houses. The original house was built in 1819 on same lot. " " FOREWORD The genius and hope of civilization is its progress, the experience of one generation are its richest contribution to the life of the next. We owe a great deal to our forefathers who were the Pioneers of this land. It was their courage, prudence and toil that layed the foundation of our present homes. It is good for us to compare the life of to-day with that of our great-grandparents' day. Our paved roads are such a contrast to the ""blazed"" path through the wilderness or the logs laid side by side with some earth on them were called corduroy roads. The Bagshaw family had to travel on foot or by ox cart to Whitby or Toronto to sell their grain. The houses were small and built of logs, the chinks being filled with wood and mortar made from burnt limestone. The first home built Christmas Day and during those days in 1819 had a roof of basswood troughs; after a time glass was carried about 55 miles from Toronto for the window. The furniture was home-made, with a ladder to reach the upstairs room. The fireplace was large enough to take a large log four feet long called the ""back-log,"" then another log was rolled to it and split wood piled above. Such a fire spread cheer and light through the home. They gathered around the fireplace at night and told stories, while the women and girls spun the wool into yarn. Books and newspapers were very scarce and precious. The first Bagshaw re-union was held at Port Bolster, August 1st, 1927 with over 200 present. The oldest man present at the Re-union was William Bagshaw who died in 1930 in his 93rd year, and he and Mrs. Bagshaw had celebrated the 66th anniversary of their wedding. He settled in Stephen township, Exeter, in 1851. He was known to mow seven acres in one day with the cradle in the early days. In the early sixties there was a competition, squaring the corners of a log building by four townships. Mr. Bagshaw was chosen for Stephen township and won the competition without square or plumb-bob. The oldest lady was Mrs. Bessie Kinsey of Toronto, daughter of Abraham. The youngest present was Mary Jewell, daughter of Stanley and Iva Jewell. A group picture of the gathering was taken and is prized as so many of the 3rd generation have passed on to their reward. The Re-union has been held every year since at Port Bolster, Lake Simcoe on Civic Holiday. We are glad to have received a goodly heritage from our fathers. Let us honour our forefathers by honouring their God and serving Him. The officers appointed that day were:—President, Dr. Elizabeth Bagshaw, Hamilton; Sec.-Treas., Dr. Judson Bagshaw, Toronto; Chairman of Grounds and Refreshments, Frank Bagshaw, Cannington; Chairman of Sports, William Bagshaw, Sunderland; Historian, Mrs. P. S. Banes, Bright. Compiled by MRS, P. S. BANES. " Sarah Bolton Bagshaw " WILLIAM BAGSHAW Born Feb. 13, 1783 in Parish of Allstone Field, County Staffordshire. Emigrated to Canada April 9, 1817. He became Squire Bagshaw and Justice of the Peace, marrying, burying, surveying farms and settling disputes. He died May 12, 1861 at the age of 78. They had 17 children of whom 14 lived a long life. He was first postmaster of Brock Township. SARAH BOLTON Born June 29, 1786 at Horham, Suffolk. Emigrated to Canada Easter Sunday, April 18, 1819 with eight children. Died in Brock township, Ontario, July 20, 1868. It took 11 weeks and 3 days to cross the Atlantic ocean in a sailing vessel. On account of a broken leg William Bagshaw did not meet her at York (now Toronto), so with the children in plum time she walked to Quaker Hill near Uxbridge where they stayed 3 months. They were building their shanty in Brock on Christmas Day 1819. During the wait between 1817 and 1819 she went in mourning as his letters had gone astray and she thought him dead. However, a letter arrived telling her he had 200 acres of good land and she set forth to Canada.
