The following illustration proves this saying true. A Generational Interval is the period of time between one generation and the next. We can assume that the average age at which a female gives birth is 25 years old. This we will take as our Generational Interval. "Scot-Scan SCOTTISH ANCESTRAL RESEARCH Scottish Family Names & Spellings. 1. Those people searching through old records in an attempt to trace their Family Tree, are often confounded by the fact that many surnames, even those of an individual, are spelt differently at different times. Frequently the Parish, or other clerk who recorded such events as Births, Marriages and Deaths, was but poorly educated - indeed he was probably functionally illiterate by today's standards! He merely recorded a name phonetically; just as it sounded. Different clerks just interpreted the same name differently! An outstanding, but by no means isolated, example of this is taken from the Old Parish Records of Ayrshire, Scotland. The surname originally being researched was ""Tinnoch. "" Within the same family, the following spelling variations were found: 'TANACH', 'TANNACH', 'TANNACK', 'TANNOCH', 'TANNOCK', 'TANNOH', 'TANNOK', 'TANOCH', 'TANOCK', 'TENNOCH', 'TENNOCK', 'TINNACH', 'TINNACK', 'TINNOCH', 'TINNOCK', 'TINOCH', 'TINOCK', 'TINOK', 'TONNACH', 'TONNACK', 'TONNOCH', 'TONNOCK', 'TONNOK', 'TONOCH', 'TUNNOCH', 'TUNNOCK', 'TUNNOCKE', 'TUNNOH', 'TUNOCH', 'TUNOCK', 'TYNNOCK', 'TYNOCK'! - These 32 spellings were all used interchangeably in the records! Naturally this creates problems when searching through a names' index - all variations have to be searched! 2. The Scottish Highland surnames beginning with ""Mc."" or ""Mac."" (meaning ""son of"") have an interesting history. Gaelic, the native language, was not a written language until fairly recently - pedigrees and other important historic facts being passed down by word of mouth from one Bard to the next. When Scotland became Anglicized and attempts were made to record the Gaelic surnames, ""son of"" was first translated as ""M'."" As time went on, ""son of"" was written as ""Mc."" until finally the form became ""Mac."" ""M'."" is now never seen, but both ""Mc."" and ""Mac."" forms are in use today. They mean the same thing. Unfortunately, many indexes differentiate between the two forms, which again necessitates careful research. Some indexes even go to the extent of differentiating between ""Mc. Something"" and ""Mc. Something""; and ""Mac.Something"" and Mac. Something"" - which is really carrying indexing to needless extremes! 3. Until fairly recently, the naming of children in a Scottish family followed a strict pattern, as follows: First son - named after his father's father. First daughter - named after her mother's mother. Second son - named after his mother's father. Second daughter - named after her father's mother. Third son - named after his father. Third daughter - named after her mother. This naming sequence is much less common than formerly. The old system has certain research benefits. 4. Deaths of children in infancy were very common, and often a child born after the decease of an older child of the same sex was given the name of the dead child. 5. One other problem may arise when searching record sources; that of naming a child for example ""John"", then calling him ""Ian"" (the Gaelic equivalent); which name might appear on a Census record! Many other Scottish first names had diminutives or variations. © Scot-Scan Ancestral Research. 1995. © SCOT-SCAN ANCESTRAL RESEARCH, 177 Regent Road, Toronto, Ontario, Canada. M3K 1H6.
