Details the events and history of Dominion Day, 8 pages "2000-01385 Miller Col 778 PICKERING ROTARY NEWS PICKERlNG, ONTARIO SATURDAY, JULY 1, 1950 DOMONION DAY IN PICKERING We believe there are a few persons living who can remember the first First of July Celebration in Pickering - not many, and few of those live in this neighborhood. None of our younger people will recall ever hearing the day called ""The Firemen's Picnic"", but that is just what the first First of July Celebration in Pickering was called. Sponsored by the local Fire Brigade of that day, is was something of a community picnic, and funds derived were used to furnish fire-fighting equipment. No record of the event is available, but from what we can get it would appear that this first First of July, or Dominion Day Celebration took place well over fifty years ago, and has been carried on every year since that day with few, if any, interruptions. First of July in Pickering has become an institution in Pickering Township. During those years, sponsorship of Dominion Day has been in the hands of several local groups— Fire Company, Athletic Associations, the Churches, and for the last few years, the Pickering Rotary Club has conducted the ""day"", at the Memorial Park here. This location will recall for some of our older citizens, the other locations at which the day has been held, even down at ""Gordon's Grove"" on the flats below the railway tracks; over on the creek flats just west of (continued on last page) WE THANK YOU! Elsewhere is this issue we have told something"" of the origin and development of the Dominion Day Celebration in Pickering, It is reasonable to suppose that among our readers there are many who take that long holiday weekend to travel off to some distant point for a short holiday....maybe out to a camp somewhere, or to visit relatives you have wanted to see....possibly you are engaged in some calling that does not permit of your walking off and leaving your job whenever you feel like it, so now is your opportunity. Then, at this point, may we suggest that among the Rotary Club numbers and their many willing helpers, there are many who feel the same way about that long week end. Here's the rest of the story....for so many years Pickering has carried on the Dominion Day celebration, we hate to give it up. This day has became a ""tradition"" in Pickering Township. We actually believe that a great many look forward to the day, and—we can not let them down. Rotary carry on some other undertakings that provide more funds to carry on their work than does this day, but the statement has been made in the Club, these words have been used “We owe the people the day"". Our township people have supported us generously—we are grateful to you—without your help we cannot carry on our work (described elsewhere)—but, if you know the membership of this Club, you'll know there are many there too, who would like to have taken; that long week-end to go somewhere or do something they would like to do, but they stay ""on the job”—it's one of the few ways we have of expressing our appreciation to you. Our eyes and ears are looking and listening over this township, ready to assist in those things in, which we are taking a part. Hope to see you on Dominion Day at the Memorial Park, Pickering Village...we'll do our best to give you a good time. YOU'LL BE ABLE To BUY A TICKET ON THE ""PONTIAC"" AT THE PARK Five thousand tickets are being sold on a 1950 Pontiac Sedan, the holder of the lucky number drawn that night able to buy that car for One Dollar. LUNCH One of the greatest assets in the Memorial Park on that day, both for the ""customers"" and to Rotary, is the large booth operated by the Pickering Branch Women's Institute. Everybody gets hungry up there at some time during the day, and when the ""coke"" or hot-dog just doesn't seem to do the trick, the W. I. up in the corner there, have a cup of good tea or coffee. With a few ham sandwiches or a piece of pie with a glass of milk, and—you're all set for another few hours. Be sure to drop over and see the ladies of the W. I. Part of the Senate—1949-50 Pres. Dr. N. F. Tomlinson (centre); Sec. W. A. Goudy, (left); and Treas. Ray T. Doble, (right)." At this time we ask your support in helping us with our Rotary Aim. Rotarians are particularly interested in children, not only in helping those who are crippled to get the proper medical care and training to overcome their physical incapabilities, but also to give encouragement and guidance to all the young people in their projects. We hope that, they will grow up, and carry on the Rotary Club activities. Community service is one of our mottoes. To help one another is the greatest joy we can get out of life.
