"FORMER PICKERING METHODIST CHURCH ABOUT 1912 The first Methodist Church in Pickering Village, a frame building, stood in what is now the old cemetary on Elizabeth St. It was built in the 1840's and did good service until 1879 when the large brick structure was built on Kingston Road. This building was demolished in 1956. The old Methodist cemetary is currently under the supervision of The Trustees of the United Church. It was restored in 1966, the broken and fallen headstones being placed in a cairn. (Morley. L. However in my reading of the history of the area, and in searching through books listing death notices in Ontario, various causes of death were noted with frequency. Some of these were: typhus, measles, fever, rheumatic fever, consumption, cholera, diptheria, smallpox, fires, marine disasters, etc.. In 1853 it was noted that there was intense heat that June, resulting in death. It also was obvious that there was a dreadful problem with alcohol, and there were many alcohol related deaths. In some cases it was possible to hazard a guess as to the cause of death, examples of which are: 1. Childbirth - Ann Kery Harris, died Aug. 13, 1905, aged 27 Baby girl died Oct.1, 1905 exact1y two months apart - Sarah Burrell died Mar.5, 1874, aged 36y-1m-2d Baby girl, died 26 Aug, 1874, aged 5m-24d exact1y five months apart 2. Accident - Richard A. Bunting, 1864 - 1934, died aged 70 Millie Gee, his wife, 1864 - 1934, died aged 70? accident as unusual for both to die same time and unfortunately no further detail as to the month etc.. 3. Stroke - Sparks, John, as told to me by Mrs. Preston " "INFORMATION ON INDIVIDUALS SARAH GORDON - came from Ireland in the early 1830's -Protestant - widow - 1837 Hon. Hilts THE GORDON HOUSE " "THE NEWS ADVERTISER, WED., OCTOBER 9,1996-PAGE 21-A R.I.P Really Interesting Places By Allan Britnell Old Methodist Cemetery On Elizabeth Street, just north of Hwy 2, is the Pioneer or Old Methodist Cemetery. St. Paul's Methodist Church once stood on the site, but today all that remains is a large collage of headstones and markers set in a concrete pad and two dozen standing gravestones. A row of 30 markers, most with just initials to commemorate the people buried there, lines the top of the monument. Those that are still legible hint at a variety of stories: You can imagine the sorrow felt by Alex and Jane Findley when they buried their son Willie John who was only 13 months old when he died in 1873. And you almost wonder if it wasn't heartache that killed 55-year-old Benjamin Wicks in 1860, a year and a month after his daughter Mary Ann died. Some headstones in the monument are merely fragments, like the one reading only ""ZON,"" who died on the 27th day of an unknown month in 1857. Others have been weathered completely smooth. Of the free-standing headstones, the tallest is a pillar dedicated to nine members of the Bunting family. Bereton Bunting had served the community as a Methodist lay preacher, justice of the peace, postmaster and general store owner at varying times in the years before his death in 1909. There are many other cemeteries in the area that hold little pieces of local history waiting for you to discover. And the neighbors won't bother you if you're just looking for a quiet place to read a book. Just leave Stephen King on the bookshelf. " w 5t 1 p? Ask .P JIT.. Ti 61A's , .
