HomeMy WebLinkAbout566Duotang bound book, 26 pages, compiled by Eleanor Todd, May 1992. Information was taken from the school log book and student enrolment imformation, 1914 to 1964. "S.S.#10 Pickering The Public School at Brougham, Ont. 1914 – 1964 School Log Book and Student Enrolment information transcribed by Eleanor Todd May, 1992. " "On March 29, 1992 a small group of former students from S.S.#10 Pickering during the 1940s, met at Rock Stop Restaurant in Sunderland to discuss the possibility of planning a reunion. It was decided that the first step would be to track down the old school records. They weren't where they were supposed to be, with the Region of Durham Board of Education. Ralph Watson, Orchard Heights, Brougham, had rescued them from oblivion. They had been sitting in a puddle of water in the basement of the new Brougham school which had been taken over by the Federal Government when the area had been expropriated to make way for a proposed airport. Ralph's boss had asked him to clean up the basement and throw the waterlogged records out. Ralph couldn't bring himself to do that so he took them home and has been their protector for the past 12 years. There is much water damage but for the most part, the records are quite readable. I have transcribed them as I found them, condensing information where possible. No doubt I have made errors. But many of the errors are not mine and I have made no attempt to correct them, even when I knew from personal knowledge that an error had been made. I refer especially to spelling. For example - Hix for Hicks, Wannup for Wannop, and whether or not Philip should have one or two l's or an s on the end. My goodness, even my own birthday was entered incorrectly! But I left it as I found it. Eleanor Todd May 19, 1992 (Formerly Eleanor Beer) " From Attendance Summaries in. Registers - S.S.p10 Pickering 1914 No book for 1915, 1918, 1919. The first school was a log building which stood on the southwest corner of Lot 19, Con. 5. It was followed by another, also a log building which stood between what is now Matthews' Hotel and the old Methodist Church, where Easton's Garage now stands. A third, known as the Black School, was built on the southwest corner of Lot 21, Con. 6. A fourth school, a frame building, stood South Of Brougham on Lot 19, Con. 5, and was afterwards moved to where the present school stands, at the west end of Brougham on Lot 19, Con. 5. The present brick building was erected in 1859. There is no record ord of the names of teachers earlier than 1036. From that time until the close of the fifties the following are some of those in charge. Clarinda Crawford Almira Churchill Sarah Jane Haley John Wilder William Davidson Jeheil Churchill John Phillipa Mr. Smith Lewis Van Camp Thomas Dawson The succession from the opening of the new school is as follows: B.F.
