National Archives of Canada Ellis Family 1846-1936 Note: Down's Toronto City and Home Distria Directory 1846-7 lists a Wiliam Ellice as a landholder on lot 14 concession 7 in Pickering Township, James Gordon as a landholder on lot 19 bf in Pickering Township and James Ham as a landholder on lot concession 8 in Whitby Township. In 1850 Wiliam Ellis occupied land on lel 18 concession 8 (he may have owned land in the mordent half but no Bargain of Sale' was ever registered. Mr. Ellis may have rented the land instead from John C. Michell or some other minor land owner on this lot (information from a search done by David Thompson, Office Manager, Whitby (Durham) Land Registry Office #40, January 4, 2000)) of York County Pickering Township. James Gordon owned land on lot 14 concession 9 in Yo* County Pickering Township. James Ham occupied land on lot concession 6 in York County Whitby Townshlp. Indic lam 1840's Claremont was known as Noble's Comes after the merchant Thomsa Noble, In 1851 thenew postoffice required a name, so Claremont was chosen and became the new official village name (Past Years in Roaming by William R. Wood, published by William Briggs, Toroom, 1911). The village had a population of 200 at this fine. This census puts William Ellis in the general area that consists of Lens 1 to 18 in the Si and SO Concession inclusive. Dennis Ellis, age 20, from Pickering married Sarah Gordon (Letilies sister, wife of William E Ellis), age 23, from Pickering November 30 1868. Sarah Ellis (daughter of James and Anne Gordon) died December 1668 age 23 years, 5 months. She is buried near her father in the Baptist Church Cemetery, Claremont (Microfilm roll M-6793). The County of Ontario Directory for 1869.70 has one William Ellis in Claremont as a householder on concession 9 lot 19 and another Wiliam Ellis not far away as a householder on concession 8lot 16 The Conner and Collson's Directory of the County of Ontario for 1869-70 has one Abraham Ellis (a miller) in the Township of East Whitby as a householder on concession 7 lot e. Clam Edith Ellis, daughter of Abram (the birth registration had Arthur Ellis, a Laborer, as the father) and Mary Ann, was bum May 8, 1876. Dr. Nichol delivered. This birth was registered Listowel The Township of Pickering Voters List for 1878 as well the 1879 list (polling subdivision No. 10, Claremont) has Vincent Ellis at the property 56 & 57 on Victoria Street (owner) and William Ellis at the property 46 on Wellington Street (owner). Vincent Ellis is also in the 1880 list. Abraham Ellis appears in the 1889 and 1900 Town of Pickering list at the property on lot 4 concession 8 (tenant) in Balsam. Dr. J. C. Roydelivered. Mary Ann Ellis, Abram's wife, died of consumption October 23, 1883 in Whitby Township under lie dere of Dr. J. C. Roy. She was 39 years old. L. W. Hill, a Minister from Vroomanton, registered the death. Circa 1888 to 1895, Abraham Ellis ran a flour mill in Balsam, 3 miles east of Claremont (1888-1889, 1892-1892 and 1595 Ontario Gazetteer and Directory). Abraham was a tenant living at concession Blot 4 Pickering Township (Farmers' and Business Directory Dufferin, Ontario, Peel, York and Darlington Township 1898 vol. XI). His parents were Robert and Lydia Ellis (Ontario intlex # 189]-9-109). Mildred Hazel Frear (William Gordon Ellis' future wife) was born June 1, 1900 in MontrAsl. Her parents were Wiliam Charles (a miller) and Lilly (Dmbble) Frees. Robert Ellis, a shipping clerk, moved to Quebec in 1899 and lived at 184 Maisonneuve Avenue, Ville St Paul until 1902. Ville St. Paul was also known as Cote St. Paul. 1898 found Wiliam E. Ellis under the jurisdiction of the Catharines post office, concession bf lot ll. Cedardale was and is on Warren Creek, near the Oshawa Station on the Grand Took Railway, 4 miles east of 6Mitby and 1 mile south of the Village of Oshawa. The village had a population of 300 at this time. Robert Ellis "sunder the jurisdiction of the Oshawa past office, concession bf lol 10. Robert's next move was to 105 Maisonneuve Avenue (1906-09, he was an employee at Canada Axe and Harvest Tool Company on St. Patrick Avenue (South side offing Lachine Canal), W. J. Chaplin manager). Maisonneuve Avenue became Roberval Street, so his address became 105 Robervel Street (1910-21, still an employee at Canada Axe and Harvest Tool Company). All of these addresses were in Ville Sl. Paul. He became a commission traveler (again) and later an insurance agent, both working out of 105 Rober ml Street (1926-30). He lived at 1715 Roberval Street (1930-32) and owned Verdun Motor Sales on 3391 LaSalle Boulevard (along riverfront) and 1990 Wellington, Verdun. He then ownetl Point Auto Supplies (1932-36) on 1892 Wellington near St. Madeleine. This information was found in the Montreal City Business Directories from 189910 1936. He was not found in any directories after the 1935-36 volume. Abraham died May 31, 1921 of heart disease and exhaustion. Abraham had been working as a miller at J. M. Lowes for years. He was living at 98 Eaton Avenue Toronto for 4 years at the time of his death. His son in law, Arthur Briton, was down as the informant on the death certificate. Abraham was buried in Norway (St John's Norway, Southeast Toronto, lot 16 National Archives of Canada Ellis Family 1846-1936 concession 1, bounded by Kingston Road Edgewater Ave, Emmen d Road and Woodbine Ave., established 1853-77,000 burials) Information in Census Records Census returns contain the official enumeration of the Canadian population. For meet provinces, the mums of 1851, 1851, I W 1.1881, 1891 and 1901 are nominal, listing each person individually, with details as to age, sex, country or province of birth, religion, racial or ethnic origin, occupation, marital scams and education. Portions of late 1851 cerins have not survived. Returns prior to 1851 are rarely complete for my geographical area and meet list only roe heads of households. For 1851,1%1 and 1811, there are also some agricultural moms, which list lot and concession numbers of firms, and provide Iconsiderable detail such as acreage, livestock and agricultural products. Additional schedules have survived for the 1811 crams, eluding bimeneslindushial returns end schedules of deaths in the preceding year. The 1901 returns also include date of birth, year of immigration and address or location of land.
