" "PRIVATE ARCHIBALD BLAKE HOPKINS killed in action August 18, 1917 The home of Mrs. N. A. Hopkins, Markham, was plunged into deep grief Wednesday last when the official telegram from Ottawa was received stating that her son, Private Archibald Blake Hopkins had been killed in action Ausust 18th. The news of his death came as a terrible shock, as he had been previously wounded and his letter received only a few days before stated that he was practically recovered and expected to be back on duty in a few days. Private Hopkins enlisted with the 116th Battalion at Uxbridge in November, 1915, and after some months training left for England in July, 1916. October 1st he left for France, serving in the trenches for the last ten months. Archie was the eldest and dearly beloved son of the late Dr. Henry Hopkins of Green River, and Mrs. N. A. Hopkins, Markham. He was born at their residence, Silver Maple, Green River, 32 Years ago, and was unmarried. He was educated at the public school, Green River, Markham High School, Business College, Toronto, and later took a special course in electric lighting and railways. Private Hopkins was a fine specimen of young Canadian manhood, bright and clean physically and mentally, he having travelled in almost all parts of the world, having crossed the ocean on several occasions. He was a clever conversationalist and was considered among his friends as an amusing entertainer. He spent six years in Vancouver, then started on a trip through the South Sea Islands, where he was met by the natives, carrying their weapons, long sharp knives, and through his fearless nature, kindly smile and friendly salute, he won the good will of the natives and was treated kindly. He visited Gibraltar, Egypt, Honolulu, Ceylon, New Zealand and all the principal cities, arriving in Sydney, Australia, when war was declared. He then decided to visit his home and left for Canada, travelling by way of Suez Canal, arriving home a hew months previous to his enlisting. Archie leaves to mourn his sad loss his mother, two sisters, Eva and Myrtle, of Toronto, and one brother Harry at home, besides a very large circle of friends, who feel he has rendered the highest service of an noble and good soldier in giving his life for the great cause of human liberty and the defence of the Empire. The whole community extends to the bereaved family their heartfelt sympathy in their time of sorrow. " "OBITUARY FOR JABEZ FAWTHROP, MARKHAM On Thursday, April 12, 1917, in his 91st year and after a lingering illness of four months, Jabez Fawthrop passed peacefully away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Nancy A. Hopkins, Markham. This old and respected citizen was born on January 24, 1827, at Northarm Hall, Lord Netherford's estate in the North Riding of Yorkshire, England. He was the son of the late Jabez Fawthrop, barrister-at-law and a nephew of the late Hon. Sir John Fawthrop, the noted English Keithlaro surgeon. In 1846 he was married to Sarah Ann White. In 1857 he came to Canada, settling at Streetsville for a number of years, thence removing to Brantford, from where he came to live at Whitevale, Pickering Township, 48 years ago. To this union were born ten children, two of whom Margaret & Mrs. Fred Moore predeceased him. His eight remaining children were present to pay their last respects to their beloved father; Mrs. Sarah Hirst, Green River; Emma, Jabez and Abram, Cornwall; James of Hastings, Neb; Mrs. Nancy A. Hopkins, Markham; Mrs. John H. White, Brougham; Mrs. Will Wilker, Wyoming, Iowa; also seven grandchildren, Oscar, Charles, and Winton White; Eva, Myrtle and Harry Hopkins; Meldrum Fawthrop; Mrs. George Ferrier. After the death of his wife 29 years ago, Mr. Fawthrop resided in Moonsocket, R. I. until 16 years ago when he retired from active work to make his home with his daughter, Mrs. N. A. Hopkins of Green River. After the death of Dr. Hopkins in 1909 he moved with Mrs. Hopkins to Markham where he has had the kind and loving care which has made his declining years so pleasant and comfortable. The funeral service was held at 1:30 PM Monday afternoon at the home of Mrs. N. A. Hopkins, conducted by Rev. H. S. Graham, pastor of Presbyterian Church, Markham, assisted at the grave by Rev. Crinckleton, pastor of the Baptist Church, Whitevale, which was largely attended by friends and acquaintances of the family. T. R. Reive, J. Huffman, M. Crosby, George Robertson, P. P. Crosby and Frank Highswander acted as pallbearers. The beautiful floral tributes were a pillow of lillies, roses & asters by the children and a bouquet of roses from the grandchildren. Interment was made beside the remains of his wife in the Whitevale Cemetery. " "OBITUARY FOR SARAH ANN WHITE Sarah Ann White, wife of Jabez Fawthrop, died March 23, 1888, aged 59 years, 4 months, 15 days. Born in Bradford, England, Sarah Ann White came to Canada 31 years ago. Soon after taking up her residence in this country she united with the Methodist body. Coming to Whitevale about 18 years ago she became a regular member of the Baptist congregation under whose teachings she was led to see the unscripturalness of her faith and practice and felt constrained to unite with them and thus came into clear harmony with the word of God. She was baptized by Rev. H. McConnell on March 20, 1881 and united with the Whitevale Church. Her faith was simple, clear and firm in the person and work of her Redeemer. Although seldom heard in public, relative to her Christian experiences, those who knew her best never doubted that the ""living water"" was in her ""a well of water springing up into everlasting life."" She suffered much during the last years of her life, but rejoicing in Christ and the comfort of the Holy Ghost her complaints were very few. The great yearning of her heart was that all her children should be brought to Christ in whom she believed, and she lived to fellowship nearly, if not all of them, in the faith of the gospel. Those of them who are alive and remain, cherish the memory of her faithful teaching in their youthful days with gratitude to God for a Christian mother. Last fall she left the village of Whitevale in company with her youngest daughter to take up her residence in Peterborough that she might spend the rest of her days in the company of her children. But a ""nobler rest"" was awaiting her to which she was soon removed and where she is now free from pain and sorrow. Her funeral service was conducted from the home of her daughter, Mrs. N. Hopkins, to the Baptist Church, Whitevale, where a sermon was preached by the writer - her pastor - from 1 Cor. 15; 55, 56, 57. Thus amid a large concourse of sorrowing friends & relatives we laid her to rest to await the morning of the resurrection. W. GUILLET RESEARCH HISTORIAN ARCHIVES OF Ontario In the revival of soccer in Ontario in recent years, teams from Central Europe seemed to dominate the sport. Before World War 1, football, as it was then usually called, was particularly popular in rural districts, and many group photographs of young farmers are preserved through their interest in that game. One of the best of these teams was the Green River Shamrocks, and in 1911 the teams won the Ontario championship. Green River, says Ed. Mitchell of Port Perry who supplied an enthusiastic account of the Shamrocks, is a little village on No. 7 highway 25 miles northeast of Toronto. The team consisted of young men from the farms, mills, and shops of the neighborhood, all of them within a ten mile radius. On a hot summer day in 1911 they defeated the Listowel team 1-0 to win the championship. On three other occasions they reached the finals, losing to Niagara Colonials twice and to the Brussels team once. ""What makes this team such a standout in the memory of all who saw them play,"" says Ed. Michell, ""was the way every man lived his part of the championship team by displaying the conduct of a great athlete both on and off the playing field."" It was something a small boy never forgot when one of the team spoke to him or patted him on the shoulder. As recently as 1951 the Green River Shamrocks got into new uniforms supplied by one of their number and trotted (perhaps slowly) out on the field for a few minutes, for they were all pretty close to 70. In our day when thousands of ""amateurs"" play games for money and our standards of honesty are not offended, it is pleasant to recall that these Ontario champions of 1911 never received a cent for playing the game. It is now 52 years since their first game in 1907, and the ten survivors still live in the same area. 1911 SOCCER CHAMPS: Albert Heisley, William Mitchell, Alfred Hoover, William Barnes, Fred Hornshaw, John White, George Ferrier, Frank Turner, Walter Booth, Hugh Percey, Gardham Tram, Winton White, James Routely, Blake Beaton, Frank Booth, Peter Stewart, Blake Annis, Jack Nighswander, Charles White.
