Of Canada to bear the expense with the exception of juice and bottles, as an experiment to prove the value of their process.( By Aug. 1, the Matzka processed Apple Juice seemed to be proving its worth and it was decided to enlarge our storage and packing plant. The Ontario Research placed a man in our plant for a Week but could ,wt determine cause. During this trouble, Dr. Donk of American Can Co. spent a day at plant and canned about 50 cane of juice. Mr. G. N. Irwin and Dr. Barbour vial tad Chas del Plant In New York where Matzke was being tried out. On his return, an Estel filter was purchased to correct mould trouble. (M.O.) t c, rlT._ po i Yom(*ti- r - In July the Merchandising Manager of Dolinion Stores stopped in at our roadside booth, and seeing our 18 oz. can asked for a representative f ANN to call on him, with the result that Dominion Stores bought out balance of can stock. It was decided to can 100,000 - 20 Oz. cans in the fall along with a few larger 105 oz. cans. Commenced the manufacturing of juice in 20 oz. double enamel lined canoOct. 10, 1938 and sold to chain stores at $1.12 per doz. it was soon apparent that a competitor was in evidence, that is Allen's brand sada by Canada vinegar at who produced a 20 oz - can. Prices were forced down to 900/doaen for 20 oz. and our complete production of 5300 cases 24-20oa. and 900 cases 6-105 oz. were sold by the early summer of 1939. The bottling of juice was again tried On Dec. 6, 1938 with 6 oz. bottles. The result showed 458 bad. The last attempt at bottling was on Jan. 14, 1939_and since that only cans have been produced. Our pack was s increased in 1939, beginning on Oct. 5 and finishing Dec. 5 -- a total of14,161 cases 24 - 20 oz. and 3,076 cases of 6 - 105 oa Prices held at 900 a doz. for 20 o and the pack was sold out by May 1940. A still larger peck was planned for the fall of 1940 with the addition of new size can, the 48 oz. Canning commenced on Sept. 27, 1940. A price warbroke out with the apparent dumping Of Nava Scotia Juice in Ontario. All eastern Canada producers were called to Ottawa by the Dominion Trades and Industries Commission. A Selling price was agreed upon by all packers. It was as follows: 20 oz. 820 per doz. 48 oz. $1.75 per doz. 105 oz. $3.40 per doz. less It 10 days P.O.B. anywhere in Net. or Me. The Canadian Food Distribution Council took it upon themselves to adjust the retailers price to 2 for 174 or 3 for 250 for the 20 oz, and 180 or 2 for 354 for the 48 oz. size. Op to the end of 1940 there had been packed 21,057 cases and 10,115 casae of this amount had been sold. (Written by A.R. Irwin) NOTE: A.R.
