died at childbirth, she was largely responsible for raising her 6 year old nephew, Walter Percy

Walter Percy
Waller traveled widely in the United States in Me late 1881 and early 1890's. His
exploits included working in a lumber bush in Michigan, mining in Colorado. and culling hay
on a ranch In California. He learned the stone masonry trade in Me USA and built a series of
stone gateposts and cenotaphs in Ontario later in life. He was pmud of the fact that he
'crossed the continent Mice and almost a thud time in his younger "am He returned to
Canada to marry his sweetheart of 10 years, Jemima Oewhu tit in 1694.

Waiter had originally planned to realm to Me USA to work as a stone mason, but was
persuaded N buy a farm and settle in Ontario. The newlyweds settled on Me B'"concession,
Bosnnquel township, lambton County. They ran the Jura post office during Mese eddy
years,serving301amiliesinthearea. They were paid at the rare of $12.00 pe -year bythe
govt for this service.

purchase of farms in Bosanquet Mp. (termed by Howard and Ethel Percy), Bright (farmed by
Harry and Florence Percy) and Agincourt (honed by Joe and Pearl Percy). Walter Percy
was a free spirit in some respects. He was offered a job doing stone masonry on a church
being q nswcted in the Winnipeg area around 1901. He left he pregnant wife, trereled to
Winnipeg, and was gone several months - After the purchase of the farm near Bright in
1920, be apparently drove 3 Clydesdale horses from Arkona to Bright, then did all Me
ploughing with a onefmmv loci averaging over 2 acres per day. Heretumedhome
when the term was ploughed - ester, he bought Me Arkona Telephone Exchange. twas
hoped that this would be a means of emplaymentfor Arthur and Anna Peay. BOM had been

and Jemima had'retireT in Markham, Walter would visit Howard and Ethel Percy on the

Dear Douglas:
Edythe Percy Clapp mentioned in a recent letter Mat you might be willing to
correspond with me on family tree Items. I have been attempting to assemble some
Information on Thomas and Mary Percy s family (arrived in Canada in 1842, and
grandparents of Walter Percy). I rid some searching at the County seat in Exeter,
Devon in April, 1999, but notable to find much information on the familythrough the
birth or christening records of their family. I was able to find a copy of their marriage
recond(Sheepwash,Devon). Mewled in 1819 -neither could write Meir names -just
affixed their mark to the marriage certificate.
Edythe mentioned Mat you are currently living in Me house where Jemima
Dewhurst and Walter Percy first met. Fascinating! Jemima Dumurst(mygrandmotheq
of course) "a certainly one of the finest and most gracious women that I have ever
mel. Edythe also mentioned Mat you have done some work on Me Hubbard family. I
would welcome any information that you might be willing to provide, and would Be
happy to provide any information that I have assembled to date on the Percy family.
Connie and I would welcome a visit from you at any time - or a phone call, etc. It would
be great to exchange information and any stones on the family sagas.
I am an old retiree from the Ontano Veterinary College (6] years old), although I
still have an office in Me Pathobiology Department and still give the odd lecture to Me
DVM students: I am still piping in the Fergus Pipe Band, although it is time to put an
end to such foolishness at my age. We have 2 parades to -morrow - one for the NOM
Nova Scotia Highlanders in Elora and the second in Gin each -a lot of activity for we
senior citizens. Edythe mentioned! Mat you are a member of the Ontario Genealogical
Society. You may have seen my short article in the November, 1999 issue on altitudes
toward women in the 185Os and 1860's "Gleanings from the Elora Obsenda (1859-
1865)"- not necessarily "the good old daye.
