In our last issue we said that we hoped to be able to chronicle the election of the worthy Reeve of Pick- ering, Joseph Monkhouse, Esq., to the Wardenship, and we are pleased that we can do so, as he was elected to that position at the meeting of the County Council on Tuesday last. Mr. Monkhouse has represented his native township some nine or ten years at the Council Board, as Councillor, Deputy -Reeve and for the last three yews as peeve, and has had plenty of municipal experience. His election to the Wardenship therefore is but a grateful tribuW to his worth as a man and a representative of the largest and we a 1 th i e s t municipality in t h e County,-ar, act which, we are sure, will be duly appreciated by every resi- dent of Pickering, of all shades of political opinion. We heartily con- gratulate Mr. Monkhouse on his election. Motion to adjourn The General Motors Chorus 0 Canada A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE REGION This new regional municipality, whose members are being sworn in this evening, has a proud history as a site of early pioneer settle- ment and as a place where two distinguished innovators, Robert Baldwin and Sam McLaughlin, made their indelible marks—one on municipal government, the other on industry. The area which forms the new regional municipality was origin- ally settled around 1800. Many place-names in the region reflect the English origins of those early settlers. One of the earliest homesteading families were the Baldwins of Clarke Township. An offspring, Robert Baldwin, became a premier of Upper Canada in the 1840s and father of the Baldwin Act of 1849, which established municipal government in Ontario as we know it today. A quarter century later, Sam McLaughlin established the Oshawa plant that laid the foundation for the General Motors Corporation of today. Under one of the provisions of the Baldwin Act, Northumberland and Durham, which had formed part of the old Home District within Upper Canada, became a united county. Ontario County, part of which is now included in the new region, was united with York and Peel counties for a two-year period in the early 1850s. On December 30, 1853, Ontario was separated from the others, and from that date until the present, the County of Ontario and the United Counties of Northumberland and Durham remained unchanged. On June 22,1973, An Act to establish The Regional Municipality of Durham received royal assent. ftmkl "-7 iii rr. _ P / e Aw HISTORY OF THE COUNTY OF ONTARIO 1615-1875 JOHNSON A LEO J YEPf.
