HomeMy WebLinkAbout1920"September 1973 George Ashe Deputy Reeve Pickering Township George Ashe: The man George Ashe and his family have become very well known in our area because of their participation in area activities. George is fourty years old, married and the father of four children. He and his wife met in 1950 and were married in 1954. They made their home in the Ottawa area until 1965 when they decided to move to Pickering. Once the children all became school-aged, Margo returned to work. She is now a teller at the Sheridan Mall Branch of the Bank of Nova Scotia. Margo has demonstrated her keen in¬terest in the community by her very active participation in many community activities. She is an executive member of both the Bay Ridges Hockey Club and the Holy Redeemer Parent Teacher Association, and she has always been an active participant in all of George's many activities. The children have shown interest in area activities just as George and Margo. Steven (18) after completing Pickering High is now enrolled in Business Administration at Centennial College. He is a member of the Pickering Figure Skating Club. Cheryl (16) is now in her third year at Pickering High where she is on the staff of Pickering High's Year Book Com¬mittee. One of her favourite sports in ringette (a type of girl's hockey). (Ashe's Deputies of course), Kevin (11) is in grade 6 at Holy Redeemer. He is a very active young athlete, having been a goalie on the Holy Redeemer Hockey Club, a goalie (as well) for ""Ashe's Deputies"", a team sponsored by his father in the Ajax-Pickering Minor Soccer League. To add to his athletic achievements Kevin is also a member of the Pickering Bay Dolphins Football Club. Brian (10) is in grade 5 at Holy Redeemer, and just like older brother Kevin is a goalie. He plays on the Bay Ridges All Star Hockey Club and for the Bay Ridges Soccer Team. George Ashe is a devoted family man, and if elected Mayor of the Town of Pickering he will bring that same kind of concern to the office of Mayor. -- ASHE is our man for the new mayor of Pickering By Don Quick Businessman and Pickering Township Councillor George Ashe, deputy Reeve of Pickering, has the support of all mem¬bers of the present Council in his bid to be the first Mayor of the new Town of Pickering. There is one exception, of course-Reeve Williams is also running for Mayor and, presumably, will not vote for Ashe. The rest of Council will, however, and I invite you to the same. I do not dislike Reeve Williams and love George Ashe. Both men are to be respected for the long service they have given us, the people of Pickering, in municipal matters. But an election is not a question of putting the right man in the right job. I happen to believe that George Ashe is the man for the job of Mayor of Pickering. So do the other members of council. The reasons are clear and simple: Leadership and Management. You can be elected a leader without being one. To lead, somebody must follow, but unhappily council hasn't been ""following my leader"" for some time past. Too many council sessions, in Pickering for far too long have been drawn-out, boring hours full of dissention and personal squabbles. This cannot be in the best interest of the residents of Pickering who look to those they elect to make decisions calmly, wisely and responsibly. In my view, this past council has made fewer wise decisions than it could have, had it acted as a team. But a team has to have a leader in which the team can rest its confidence - and, regrettably, it seems that it hasn't been able to do this. It is my personal conviction that Pickering needs a good, new start as it goes into it's first year as a town in the Regional Municipality of Durham. That's why I and my council colleagues will support Ashe. Pickering needs a leader who works hard at the job-George does. Pickering needs a leader with sound business-like methods and judgement, and we believe George has these qualities. Pickering needs a Mayor who can build not only a team out of council, but a team out of the town officials. This past year has indicated con¬siderable unrest within the municipal staff, and this must be ended. Pickering MUST have mature, responsible, positive, confident leadership-and the present members of council (with the one exception) believes George Ashe will see that Pickering gets just that. It is my hope that all Pickering, voters will join me and my council colleagues in electing George Ashe as Mayor of Pickering on Monday. -- Inside this Issue What’s Happening To Pickering… Page 2 Editorial… Page 2 What People Say About George Ashe… Page 3 Ashe: The Family Man… Page 4 " "On Monday, Oct. 1, 1973 Be sure you vote to elect George Ashe your New Mayor -- The Region must have a strong Mayor: Vote George Ashe What's Happening To Pickering. Pickering Township becomes the Town of Pickering on January 1, 1974. Its shape will be different. The West Rouge will become part of Scarborough, and other areas to the east and north join Ajax. The new Town of Pickering will include those areas designated for the second Toronto International Airport, and for the new city of some 200,000 people. The new Town of Pickering will be one of eight municipalities in the new Regional Municipality of Durham. As such, it will have an important task to play in the interests of all citizens of the Region and of Pickering. On Monday October 1- within a few days-Pickering will voste for a new Council. For the first time ever, the leader of the Council will be called Mayor, not Reeve. Six Councillors and a Mayor will be elected. Three of the councillors will be Regional Councillors - meaning that they will be elected to represent Pickering on the Regional Council as well as on the local Pickering Council. The other three will be local coun¬cillors - they will represent local Pickering interests only. The Mayor will sit on both the regional and the local council. You can see why it is important that you vote on Monday, Oct 1. Vote for a man who can lead the new council effectively and positively. Vote for George Ashe. -- Editorial MONDAY, OCTOBER 1 is the most important day Pickering has ever had or may ever have. On Monday, Pickering residents will elect it's first-ever Mayor and the first council for a new town. The apathy that has been the measure of many municipal elections in the past must not be seen in this election. The right to have the men and women who will be responsible for leading t he citizens into the new regional government structure is one that must be exercised for the best interests of those same citizens. The choice, as we see it is simple-leadership and good municipal management. We believe George Ashe comes up best of the two candiates for Mayor with those desirable objectives in mind. Vote on Monday, vote for positive leadership, vote for who has the trained ability to lead and manage vote George Ashe. " "What people say about George Ashe: Bill O'Brien President, Bay Ridges Hockey Club. ""I have known George Ashe for the past six years and in that time he has sup¬ported all Minor sport ac¬tivities in the area. George is interested in youth and in our community and for these reasons, I am supporting him for Mayor"". Don Kitchen, Pickering Councillor, Bay Ridges. ""Times have changed, but John Williams hasn't. When he was first elected he was the right man for the job, but that's all water under the bridge. Williams in no longer an asset to the township. His leadership has lost its credibility. He doesn't ask for anyone's opinion, but gives his own view and expects everyone to go along with it. This is not the way it should be between the council and its leader. I am certain that George Ashe is the right man for the job that has to be done NOW."" Bob Wolowich, President of the Bay Dolphins Football Club, West Shore ""George Ashe is dedicated, extremely sincere, honest and involved in many area activities. He is a per¬sonable type of man, not headstrong, and he always looks at both sides of an argument. That is an im¬portant quality for a man leading people. I think he is an excellent choice for Mayor.""Ron Sproule,Businessman,Rosebank. ""I'm sure that many will be surprised to learn that I'm supporting George Ashe for Mayor, particularly when it is well known that I have in the past supported Williams. I do so because of my concern for this area, and, in my view, we must have a man who can work along with other people for the common good of everybody in the region. On Monday Oct. 1, I'm voting for Ashe."" Garth Bryant, Jeweller, North Pickering Township. ""I'm voting for George Ashe because I come from the northern part of the Town¬ship. I believe that the North has not had adequate leadership in the past. George Ashe, in my view, will give us the kind of representation and leadership we need."". Sandra Redshaw, Housewife & Secretary of the Claremont Recreation Committee. ""It is time for a change. We need a change at the top to someone who recognizes that we in the north do exist. The north has been overlooked by some members of council for years. I'm supporting George Ashe because he believes in one Pickering."" Lloyd Britton, Business Man, Pickering Twp. North. ""My support for George Ashe is due to concern for those of us who have been expropriated. We are all tenants of this area and need to be served, at the municipal level not forgotten. During the last two years I have acquired a ""first name basis"" with George and firmly believe that he is the diplomatic man with the determination, drive and desire to defend and represent those of us who are being uprooted. I know too, that he has the qualities for strong leadership. At this point in time, our new Town needs George Ashe..."" Don Quick, Pickering Councillor and former vice-chairman On¬tario County Board of Education. ""George has the ex¬perience and the leadership ability to get the new Town of Pickering off to a good start. The new council has to act as a team for Pickering, working with other levels of government and with its own staff. I think George will see that that job is done.""
