"The Baseline School S.S. #2
Township of Pickering
It was located on the S.E. corner of Brock Road and the Baseline which is now Bayly
Street. Built in 1852.
Prior to 1852, there was a school on the Brock Road a little north of the Kingston
Road. Later a frame school was on the Brock Road just south of the railroad.
The school in the new location at Brock and Baseline was of brick and built in 1852.
In 1927 an addition was added with cloak rooms, toilets and a domestic science
room -Pickering News July 22, 1927.
In 1938 the brick walls were stuccoed and the old Gothic style windows replaced.
In 1953, a second classroom was added.
A Township By-Law #682 - December 15, 1893 stated that S.S. #2 would comprise
the following areas. Lots 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23 in the Broken Ranges.
Those parts of Lots 12 and 13 West of Duffins Creek. All of Lots 19, 20, 21, 22, 23 -
1st Concession. The South halves of Lots 16 and 17 - 1st Concession.
That part of Lot 18 lying South of the Kingston Road in the 1st Concession.
The whole of Lot 23 and the S.W. quarter of Lot 22 - in the 2nd Concession. R.R.

An earlier By-Law 564 set the teacher's salary at $500.00 per year for S.S. #2.
Some early teachers were: J.W. Palmer - 1846, J.D. O'Sullivan in 1849, B. Bunting
1851-1852.
Other teachers were:
Thos Doidge - July 7, 1882 --- These dates are of S.S. #2
Miss Yoe - December 25, 1891 --- Notices in the Pickering News
George P. Richardson - December 20, 1895
J.A. Bush - January 11, 1901
J.A. Bush - January 3, 1902
Helena W. Kime - March 12, 1926

Some local School Superintendents were:
Rev. J. Durant - 1854 From Past Years in Pickering - Woods
A. Kennedy - 1855
E. Birrell – 1856-65
J. Baird - 1866-68
Rev. W.A. Ross - 1869-71
In 1871 schooling became ""free"" and the first County School Inspector,
Mr. McBrien was appointed.
A Centennial Day was held on June 26, 1954. Speaker on this day was the well
known author Mr. Gregory Clark introduced by Mr. W. Murkar of the Pickering News.

School was on East side of Church Street just North of Kingston Road in the Village o
f Pickering.
The Continuation School was added to the Public School in 1923, the Public School
being built in 1888.
Both schools torn down in 1964.
