Brougham’s Lament No1 Come one and all that love good laws And listen to my rhyme For the court has just dicided That free love is no crime No 2 A Court was held in Brougham last week Divised-virtues and disgrace. Some parties trying to improve The morals of this place. No 3 The crowd was large the court was slow And very hard to tune Some looking stupid others grave As cats and owls at noon No 4 The plaintiff now walks boldly in Dark smiles upon his face And says unto his moral court “I’m ready for the case” No 5 Supreme arose with trembling form and reads the charge aloud [Which brougt defendant to her feet] Bringing terror to the guilty And silence to the crowd No 6 Defince steps bravely to the front And stands beside her foe And to the fearfull question asked She boldly answers “No” No 7 Puck did not speculate that day Although stock was not high She said “The market may go down I’ll try it by and by” " "No 8 They called each witness to the stand Who spoke with nervous fear Until the peace was badly broke By calling on the beer No 9 A lawyer then becomes enraged The crowd began to cheer He said that he was much surprised To see such conduct here No 10 The evidence grew worse and worse Till some refused to tell And then to settle a dispute They sent it to Farewell N 11 Then sealing all their gleanings up They told the crowd quite plain That they could not a ---- give Until revised again No 12 Untill this cruel decision came _____were quite at ease But now we find to our surprise We may go as we please No 13 For Court and Counsel did agree That free love was no crime And matrimony was no use But in a stormy time No 14 Both love and licinse are played out Both brought to sad disgrace And if there is no chang Oh God! Have mercy on this place "
