At a Meeting of the Inhabitants of the Township of PICKERING, held at the Court House, in the Village of Duffin's Creek, on Saturday, the 24th of August, 1848, and convened for the purpose of raising by public subscription, a sum of, money to be offered as a Reward, for the discovery and conviction of the incendiaries who set fire to the Dwelling House and Barn of Mr. Jordan Post, in their Township, on the nights of the 18th and 20th of August, as well as to give public expression to their feelings of unmitigated detestation and horror which the community entertain for the cold-blooded and assassin-like malignity that could impel the cowardly incendiary thus to convert the home and hearth of a respectable and unoffending family to a scene of wide spread calamity and desolation; and also to devise means for bringing the unprincipled wretches to well merited and condign punishment. Mr. Eli Leavens was unanimously called to the Chair, and Francis Leys, Esq., requested to act as Treasurer, and P. F. Whitney, Esq., Secretary Moved by Ebenezer Berrill, Esq., and seconded by Francis Leys. Esq., and Resolved, That a public subscription be now taken up, for the purpose of raising a sum of money, to be offered as a reward for the detection and conviction of the person or persons who set fire to the dwelling house and barns of Mr. Jordan Post, in Pickering, on the nights of the 17th and 20th August, 1848; and also that Committees be formed to carry out the above object throughout the Township. Moved by Mr. James Greig, and seconded by Mr. Donald McKay, and Resolved, That four Committees be formed, for the purpose of obtaining subscriptions; and that the following gentlemen do compose said Committees:— North West quarter of the Township ; Mr Joshua Wixon, Wm. Miller, Wm Mitchell, J. Remer. and Wm. Walsh. North East quarter; Messrs. N. Howell, John Little, Wm. Waddle, E. Berrill. and F. Green. Esqrs. South West quarter: Messrs. David Clarke, Gen. Roomer, Abraham Knowels, G. Laing, and Wm. Dember, Esqrs. South East quarter: Donald McKay, Wm. Hartwell, P. Taylor, John Richardson, and James Logan. Moved by F. Green, Esq., and seconded by Mr. P. Taylor, and Resolved, That his Excellency the Governor General, as head of the Government, be humbly requested to head the subscription list, with such a sum as to his Excellency shall seem meet, to aid in raising the proposed reward, for the detection and conviction of the incendiaries. Moved by E. Berrill. Esq. and seconded by E. Bostwick, and Resolved, That the following gentlemen be appointed to memorialise his Excellency the Governor General, on the foregoing resolution, viz : P. F. Whitney and Francis Leys, Esqrs., and D. Burns and Mr. J. Greig; and that P. F. Whitney, Esq., be convener of the said Committee, in whom all the subscription lists shall be given in on or before stated day, the 9th September next. Moved by Mr. Joshua Wixon, and seconded by D. Burns, and Resolved, That it having come to the knowledge of this meeting, that subsequent to the notice convening the present meeting, another incendiary fire occurred on the night of the 25th inst., on the property of Mr. Geo. Post, by which the barn, and a considerable quantity of grain were consumed ; that two thirds of the sum now subscribed shall be paid for the discovery and conviction of the incendiary or incendiaries, who set fire to Mr. Jordan Post's buildings, on. the 18th and 20th inst ; and the other one third for the discovery and conviction of the incendiary who set fire to Mr. Geo. Post's buildings, on the night of the 25th inst. - Moved by Mr. James Logan, and seconded by Mr. George Brown, and Resolved, That Mr. Leavens do vacate the chair, and that Mr. P. Taylor be requested to take the same. When the thanks of the meeting was unanimously voted to Mr. Leavens for his proper and gentlemanly conduct in the chair. Pickering, August 24th, 1848. P. F.
