Building Style
(Excellent)
A unique local example of a finely crafted Neo-Classic structure.
The coursed fleldstone face, 12/12 true divided lite windows and attention to quality detail
set it apart from many of the stone structures in the municipality. Clues from the title search in
conjunction with the exterior millwork details and low massing would date this building c.
1830. making it one of the oldest standing structures in the municipality.
Architectural Integrity
(Excellent)
The early construction date and fine integrity of all original millwork sets the structure apart
from most others in the municipality. The Neo-Classlc style is traditional in the vernacular
construction of early Pickering settlements but the fine maintenance of the property sets it
apart from all others.
Tar staining on the front facade would indicate the removal of the original front porch,
likely at the time of construction of the cobble stone terrace.
Design Compatibility
(Fair)
One of the last standing buildings of this type in the area. The parklike setting of the property
sets it apart in its neighbouring community. Its massing and style are consistent with features
of the larger municipality.
Landmark
(Excellent)
Period plantings and the high maintenance level of this property make it an outstanding local
landmark. Although privately held, it is an excellent identifier within the community.
Community Context
(Good)
Unique in architectural style to its immediate surroundings but notably the settlement house of
the area.
