NEW SCHOOL FOR PICKERING To Be Or Not To Be—That Is The Question A ""NO"" vote next Wednesday will mean no new school for Pickering this year. There is no alternative offered in the ballots-there IS no alternative. The present school building was condemned by the Medical Officer of Health more than two years ago. The use of the two basement rooms and of the upstairs room—Grade 8—has been condemned this year by the Department of Education at Queen's Park. A fire of even small proportions could spell a major tragedy. The septic tanks have given trouble for years, yet two hundred and twenty children continuously tax their capacity. In the spring the over-flow runs down the open ditch along Church Street. In September of this year the families now living in this School Section will have two hundred and eighty children ready for admission to public school. Sub-division builders expect to build well over a hundred new homes this year. Every new house that's built will add to the load. Recognizing the urgency of our situation, the Department of Education has given approval for a six-room school and will make grants towards its construction on the basis of a maximum cost, including furnishings and equipment, of $120,000. Your Board does not expect a school to cost this much, but even if it did, what would it cost YOU? THE AVERAGE ASSESSMENT IN THIS VILLAGE IS $ 2582.00 THE ANNUAL TAXES TO BUILD THE NEW SCHOOL WOULD BE $ 11.83 THE BIGGEST TAXPAYER IN THE VILLAGE WOULD PAY ONLY $ 50.34 Will YOU spend the price of a pack of cigarettes a week for decent accommodation for our children? Wednesday, April 18th, is voting day. A new school is essential. Please vote. For your children's take vote ""YES"". THE URBAN BOARD OF PUBLIC SCHOOL TRUSTEES OF PICKERING VILLAGE W. D.
