The History of Green River School 1829 — School Section 11, Pickering — 1964 The first School was erected in the year of Our Lord One thousand Eight hundred and Twenty –nine, on Brunswick Hill. The second school was erected on lot 30 concession 5, in 1842. The Third School was erected on lot 33 concession in 1864 by Issac Alfred Gurner for the sum of $960.00 This School stood for almost one hundred years serving the pupils of this section. The Bell Cairn marks the front steps of the school and this is the bell that called the children to their studies. Improvements were made over the years and it is interesting to note that indoor toilets were installed in 1930 and a piano & hydro added in 1938. There was at one time an old visitors book dating from 1859. The first entry was in the hand of Wm Barnes who remarked he considered the school well conducted, the teacher was Wm. Milliken. The next entry was by Ebenezer Birrel ""local Superintendent"". In 1864 this entry occured ""William Johnson of Aurora visited the skool and to their dissgrase found the teacher and the skollars fast asleep."" The fourth, and present School was erected in 1958-59 by the Oxford Construction Co., for the sum of $42,872.00. This school opened for classes in September 1959. The School Board was W.Woolhead, A.C White & Benson Draper. During the years 1962-65 the grounds were improved, graded, levelled, seeded and a backstop, incinerator and Bell Cairn erected, in 1964 the pavement was laid and 10 Maple and 50 Popar trees planted. The Secretary treasurers were-Wm. Barnes, John Wilson, Wm Turner, Alfred Michell, Peter Stewart, Fawcett Wilson, W.G. Barnes, Wm.Turner, Roy Carter, Howard Malcom, Robt. Malcolm. Some of the scholars who have made a name for themselves have been- Alpheus Hoover- founder and first president of The Independent telephone Co. In 1906 he was elected Vice president of the International Telephone Association at Chicago. C. L. Burton - Prestdent and General Manager of The Robt. Simpson Co., and author of "" A sense of Urgency. D.R. Beaton - who like his father served as a, faithfull township clerk.. All these people as well as a long list of Scholars, Trustees and pioneers we honor as part of our history. CTB /65 "
