St. George's Anglican Church on Randall Dr. received $84,250 from the Ministry of Culture and Communications to continue interior restoration. The church, which was built in 1859, replaced a log building. Built in red brick in the Gothic Revival style, it's seen little alteration since then. Following a condition survey by a restoration architect, restoration work was started in 1984. Exterior work was completed in 1987. A large part of the church yard surrounding the building was recently sold to make room for a townhouse development. Part of the funds from the sale will also be used toward the restoration work. ""Heritage conservation has never been more crucial than it is today,"" Durham West MPP Jim Wiseman says of the grant, which was awarded under the ministry's cultural facilities improvement program. ""Through restoration projects like this one, we are doing more than remembering our past,"" he says. ""We are using it to give us inspiration and guidance for the future."" "
