HomeMy WebLinkAbout357"Article from the Pickering News. Dec 1929: no additional citation —On Friday afternoon last St. George's congregation sustained a heavy loss as a result of a fire which broke out in their church. When the alarm was sounded many willing helpers were soon on the scene, and a hand fire extinguisher from Spencer's garage did much to prevent the fire from spreading. The fire engine, in due time, was also brought into service, and the fire extinguished. How the fire originated is a mystery, as there had been no fire in the furnace since the previous Sunday evening. At first it was thought that it was due to defective wiring, but the fire started where there was no wiring. As the church is not kept locked some person may have gone in for shelter and dropped a cigar or cigarette butt, but there is no evicence as to this. The insurance appraiser was down on Saturday, when the loss was estimated at about $500. As a stained glass window was destroyed this estimate may be exceeded. The damage was confined mostly to the east end, where considerable music was destroyed, and in the vestry, where fire originated, much damage resulted. Until the damage is repaired services will be held in their club room. The sympathy of the other congregations is extended to St. George's in their loss which is covered by insurance. "
