Camp Niagara Upton Hill Va. Jan 10 1861
Dear Sir
I take my pen in hand to answer the letter that you received from of the 5th and was very glad to
hear that your were all well and enjoying good health and hope this will find you the same you
said old Jones was going to uxbridge to work at his trade but I am afraid that he will not do
much at it as he is to wild and does not pay attention enough to his work but as to Christmas
we had as good a time as could be expected for soldiers our company had an oyster dinner
and the general sent us two barrels of beer and each one had a quart apiece and we done
Nothing all day but ____ around all day we had a battallion drill the day before Newyears
and the Colonel said that it was the last drill that would have this year and the next day being
the newyears he would give us command of the regiment that day and we could elect our own
officers so we put privates in for officers and made the officers go in the ranks and we put them
on guard and made them carry water and we put them in the guard house we made the
Captain go in the ranks and shoulder his gun like a private we elected a young chap for Capt
called Debould for lieutenant Peeterson for Ensign Taylor I was 3rd Corporal and John Smith
was 4 corporal we had dress parade just as good as the officers and the colonel said he never
seen it done better and the day ____ of pleasant we have done nothing since but been on
picket once and stay in our tents and take our turn on guard our tent is made of logs four feet
high and 9 feet square and the canvas tent on top our bed is 4 feet wide both on one side of
the tent one above the other we have straw ticks filled with straw and blankets
