Brown While Canada mourns and honors an illustrious son, and the Land beyond the Sea mourns a noble Statesman, we in the little Village of Brougham, in Pickering Township, love to recall the happy schoolboy, who quite [f]requently spent holidays on his grandfather's farm one mile west of the village. His grandfather, the late Thomas Hubbard was the third in line from the first Thomas Hubbard, who came here in the latter years of the 18th century of U.E.L. stock. His grandfather was in comfortable circumstances and devoted much of his time to public affairs; was a member of the Township Coucil; he was a magistrate, and his good judgment and wise council was sought by many. His wife, Harriet Chuchill Hubbard represented another worhtwhile pioneer family, so Charlotte Hubbard Greenwood was born and grew to womanhood in a home where the highest ideals of life were maintained. Perhaps the late Viscount Greenwood inherited from such worthwhile forbears, many of their sterling characteristics. One special incident of those days of over 60 years ago, when he was about eighteen, he was scheduled to recite at an entertainment in the Township Hall, which was packed with an expectant audience. He had appeared on the platform, made his bow when he became convulsed with laughter, apparently tried to proceed, but too late, as the audience was rocking with laughter, many a stern-visaged face contortd with laughter - when the right moment arrived Thomas Hamer bowed, and walked from the platform. Supurb acting, thus demonstrating at an early age his power to sway and control other minds. His parents passed away in 1902 and were not spared to share with him his great honors. Several generatiions of his ancestors rest in the village cemetery here, and several family relatives will keep in loving memory this much honored Canadian whose wonderful career has been of great interst to all who ever knew him.
