HomeMy WebLinkAbout1366Photocopy of an obituary for Charles Seneca Palmer from the Pickering News, dated May 17, 1935.A splendid gentleman has just passed on; one of the old pioneers of this township, and just bordering on 90 years of age, and one of the last of the pupils, who received the tuition of Mr. Brereton Bunting at No.2, Baseline School. Charles Seneca Palmer was born on the old homestead, lot 20, Con.2 which under his father was taken out as a Crown Land Deed. The family cleared that property, which is ow owned by the Victor Ross Estate. For the last 20 years Mr. Palmer had resided in the village of Pickering. Mrs. Palmer, who was formerly Jane Lang, passed away in 1921. Always of a bight and active mind. He took an important part in public affairs and acted as Councillor for a number of years. In politics he was a Liberal, and although without normal sight for the last four years, through the happy medium of radio, he was able to follow political addresses and had a wide vision and foresight into the affairs of the times. Never was he heard to complain of any affliction and his was a cheery and hopeful disposition. He had a firm trust in the Almighty and had faith that seemed to supersede all difficulties. In his religous life there were no dark clouds, possessing always a trust which carried him through the dark shadows. Even a few days before he passed on, one privileged to be with him heard in this own humble way a prayer which seemed to reach to the steps of the Mercy Seat. Although there were no children in the family, several nephews and nieces are left a memory of a truly modest, yet great Christian man. For the last five years hes lived with Mr. and Mrs. James L. Palmer. The Rev. Dr. Carmichael was his bloved pastor. A loyal Canadian, a true Christian and a honarable gentleman has left our midst. His gracious friendship has left a gap which will not soon be filled.
