Mrs. T.C.Brown PassesIsabella Smith, Widow of the late T.C.Brown, passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Howard Malcolm, Brougham, on Monday of this week in her 90th year. The oldest citizen in Brougham, and one of the oldest, widely known in this township, the late Mrs. Tom Brown was a most remarkable old lady. A correspondent for the News for something around fifty years, she was admired, respected and loved by the may of the News staff over those years. The present editor called on her every Monday morning for seventeen years, and his father did the same for twenty-seven years. That call on Mrs. Brown, weekly, always turned out to be a friendly visit, and looked forward to by us each week. Mrs. Brown was a daughter of one of Pickering's early families who came to Canada from Scotland in The 60's. Mrs. Brown was born in Brougham. Being an early resident herself , current events and history of Brougham and the countryside appealed to her, resulting in the keeping of a daily diary which she kept up-to-date to the last. She was a fountain of facts on her subject and hobby. She had lived in their Brougham home for sixty years, yet the News recalls Mrs. Brown telling of the days when as a girl she was employed as a domestic for the Spink family, in the residence now occupied by Wm. E. McEachnie here, and that, in the days when Pickering Village was known as Canton. Active in church, Institute and all worthy local activities, a friend and helper to any local family in need. Mrs. Brown's passing marks the end of an "era" in the life of the village of Brougham. Mrs. Brown is survived by one son, William J. of Toronto, and one daughter, Mrs. Howard Malcolm, of Brougham: one sister, Mrs. F.C. Thornton of Woodtock: ten grandchildren and twenty great grandchildren. The funeral took place yesterday afternoon, with service at Brougham United Church, her pastor Rev. Lackey, in charge, and interment in the Brougham Cemetery.
