Powell, Church Steet, Pickering passed away on Thursday August 1st, 1940, in his 80th year. The funeral took place on Saturday, with interment in Mount Lawn Cemetery, Oshawa. Rev. E.G. Robinson, of St. George's Anglican Church, conducted the funeral, assisted by Rev. M.R. Jenkinson, of Pickering and Rev. Stanley Osborne of Eaton Memorial Church, Toronto. Deceased was a life-long resident of Pickering Township and was the great grandson of James Powell, who settled early in the 1800's where No. 1 School is now located, near Pickering Beach, the second white family to settle in the distrit. Deceased was the son of Henry Powell and Rachael Woodruff, the latter, a descendant of the Lamoreaux family, who fled from France in the reavolution early in the last century, coming to this country. Fifty seven years ago he married Minnie Stanley, who lived with her family on the Stanley homestead on the Base Line, after which they farmed the present Bradshaw, and then to the homestead, later purchasing the farm now occupied by his son, Elmer, on the B.F. Con. where he resided until moving into the village twenty-seven years ago. He was a member of the former Bible Christian Church, later the Methodist church. He is survived by his wife, three sons and one daughter: Harry, of Hamilton, Elmer and Roy of Pickering, and Pearl (Mrs. J.S. Balsdon), also of Pickeing: also ten grandchildren and three great grand-children, also one brother, Thomas H. Powell of Norwalk, Conn., and one sister; Mrs. James Richards of Oshawa.
