Born and educated in Pickering Township at Dunbarton, he was engaged in the motor transport driving business and later started his own milk hauling business. He later started the Mitchell Fuels Co. He was a member of Pickering United Church, the Pickering Rotary Club, Doric Lodge, A. F. and A. M., Fire Chief of Pickering Fire Brigade, and was so well known for his charities and generosity toward others. ""Big Art"" as he was affectionately known to many, was in the opinion of the writer one of the biggest-hearted men we have ever met. He was always available for almost any type of task with which be was confronted. The writer has long had the privilege of spending much time, with him, and recall particularly a day last fall when he bad been down through the Minden-Bancroft area, when the fall colours were appearing. He suggested and, wanted to return the next day, accompanied by your Editor with his ""colour"" film - even he suggesting he drive and buy this somewhat expensive film. We spent that day on the highway through Haliburton, and confess that we had, that pleasant surprise of seeing that ""Big Art"" too, had a deep appreciation of things beautiful. We felt we became vastly better acquainted with Art that day than we had ever been before, ""While no one we expect, will ever know to what, extent, he practiced this, but it too often reached our ears of ""another gift or generous recognition” toward some one individual, family or group. The practicing of charity will long be remembered by a great many as one of the virtues of Art Mitchell. He undoubtedly had a very wide circle of friends found in all walks of life, and in this village his passing will be that of one of our leading citizens. He is survived by his wife, the former Hilda Morrison, his father James Mitchell, brother Harold and sister Margaret (Mrs. Donald Annan). His mother predeceased him several years ago. The funeral will take place this Saturday afternoon, with service in Pickering United Church at 2.30 p. m. and interment at Erskine Cemetery. "
