Social life centred around the churches and few people went far afield to have their fun. There are many nice homes in the village today, but the truth is, there are none that compare with the showplaces of yesteryear. People today tend to build and landscape from Homes and Gardens. It would appear that in the old days, people spent more time around their homes and in the weeks to come, you will see what is meant by this comment from the pictures that will appear. Even the very modest brick homes were made attractive by hedges, picket fences, arbours and hanging flower pots on the nice wide verandahs. The home shown this week on Church Street south, just at the top of the little hill, on the west side of the street. Many will remember it as the Roffey home. It is now divided into apartments. When this picture was taken about 1905, it was obvious that great pride was taken in keeping the lawns and grounds attractive. The women in the photo are playing croquet, a popular outdoor game of that era. It must have been murder cutting all that grass with a hand mower. Those were the days.... "
