Brougham, February 14—A meeting was held on Feb. 1, of representatives of
Brougham congregation interested in the up keep of St. John's Cemetery in the 7th
concession, and representatives from Claremont. This cemetery was the burial place
for Presbyterians in this district for many years, but when St. John's congregation came
to Brougham in the late 70's, no plans were made by the church, as a church, for its
up-keep, but was left to private interests. A committee has done much to keep it in good
condition. Now these men are aging and labor costs have increased Brougham
congregation has made a belated contribution from a congregational trust fund to
augment the fund already existing hoping to have a fund for perpetual up-keep.
Now, a committee, composed of representatives from both Brougham and Claremont
will be in charge of the Cemetery Fund and will supervise the caretaking.
Ways and means were devised to enlarge the funds, so that the interest will keep the
cemetery cared for in a proper manner. With the increased cost in labor,
the work done may require more voluntary giving to become self-sustaining.
