HomeMy WebLinkAbout1355Photcopy of an obituary for Mrs. John Murkar taken from the Pickering News, dated September 28, 1951, page 1.Resident of Pickering Village Since 1894, Mrs. John Murkar Passes in Her Eighty-Sixth YearComing to Pickering in 1894 when her husband the late John Murkar assumed the principalship of the local public school, Mrs. John Murkar passed away on Monday at the home of he son W.C. Murkar, in her 86th year after an illness of about five weeks.Born in Sydenham, near Trenton the family moved to Bruce County when the deceased was five years old. Entering a popular calling for young women of those days, she was engaged in millinery at London which she followed until her marriagee in 1893.A member of the Presbyterian Church here, she was an active member of its societies during her lifetime. She was one of the first members of the Woman's Club (then called the Swastika Club) and a member of the W.I.; also of the first tennis Club in Pickering, she, only a couple of weeks ago, was recalling those days and jokingly recalled the late Dr. R. M. Bateman and herself challenging all comers in tennis doubles. She had always been an enthusiastic horse-woman, and when attending the Toronto horse shows it was always difficult to get her to leave before the end of the last act. She had enjoyed a rich life, as stated by her only a few days before she died. Their home here was always known as an open house to their may associateds and friend,she enjoyed entertaining their friend.Shortly after the death of Mr. Murkar, she went to live with her son, who survives her, with also four grandsons. two grand- daughters and three great grand-daughters. An only daughter, Mrs. D.J. Callaghan (Irene) predeceased her ten years ago.The funeral took place on Wednesday afternoon with service in the Prebyterian Church, her pastor, Rev. David Marshall officiating, assisted by Rev. A.E. Young. Pallberarers were: Messers Frank Hall, R. C. Reesor, J.D. Remmer, J.E. Monney, M.S. Chapman, and L.M. Morley, Interment took place n the family plot, Erskine Cemetery.
