HomeMy WebLinkAbout1339Photocopy of and obituary for George Scott taken from the Pickering News, dated November 18, 1949, page 1.George Scott PassesA prominent resident of Pickering Township who served as Warden of Ontario County and was active in the Conservative Party in the Riding, William George Scott died at the home of his son, G. David Scott, 19 Hillcroft Street, Oshawa, on Saturday, November 12. Mr. Scott had not been in good health since 1932, but was seriously ill for only three weeks. Born it Claremont on March 5, 1869, and was married there on September 14, 1892. A farmer all his life, Mr. Scott lived for the greater part of his life in the local district with the exception of six years as Farm Superintendent of the Jail Farm at Langstaff. He had lived in Oshawa for the past year. A member of the Claremont United Church, the deceased was a member of the Brougham Union Lodge, A.F and A. M. He had served as President of the South Ontario Riding Conservative Associeation and for years was organizer for the Party in Pickering Township.Mr Scott served as member of the Township Council for many years and in 1920 was elected Warden of Ontario Couty. He was also the first President of the local Home Telephone Company which brought about the amalgamation of the telephone services in the district in which he lived.Predeceased by his wife, the former Minnie Jane Pugh, on December 20, 1948, he leaves to mourn four sons: Thomas F. and O. David Scott, of Oshawa; R. Gordon Scott of Windsor and P.A. Scott Harlingen, Texas. Also surviving are sister, Mrs. G.E.Dick of Barquette, Man: a brother D.A. of Fenelon Falls and eight grandchildren. A son, Dr. W.J. Scott, Cookstown predeceased him.The funeral took place on Tuesday, with interment as St. John's Cemetery, Brougham.
