Mr. Deakin said that he would like to see Cie

m?nt had not brought one single public park nor
one dollar of i tdustrial assessment.
Mr. Williams said that the towns5:p could not

Opinion
'Not Us
But You Rene!
It seems these days that English-speaking
Canada is standing like a large, overgrown
retarded child while his smaller, angry brother
beats him while complaining bitterly that his
small size is due to the lack of understanding
by the bigger boy.
Every day we are bombarded by newspaper.
radio and tele-ision reports which all add to
the torrent of screaming and yelling from French
Canada. The one common complaint emanating
from that turbulent part of our country is that
we English Canadians are too dominating, won't
let little brother enjoy at least half of the marbles
and worst of all won't speak French at the drop
of the hat.
"Little brother" or should we say "petit
fr'_re", having arisen from his slumber of 50
years and wearing none of the trappings of an
old and wise man is flexing his juvenile muscles
and asking for adulthood at age eight!
"Those of us who in the past wished to see our
country progress rapidly and produce wealth
which could be shared by each and every citizen
were frustrated regularly because one-third of
C ar.ada - Quebec - was lacking in general
education, was lacking in technical skills and
m _)st important of all lacking in desire to think
nationally.
Then suddenly eight years ago French Canada
cl,: ,assed itself of political bankruptcy, flexed its
m-iscles and instead of launching out 3o improve
its ability to provide better things for its
citizens turned on English Canada to blame all
of its short comings on those who do not speak
F rench.
Rene Levesque, himself a pronounced
separatist, told English Canada this past week
end that after French Canada separates he
:!xpects English Canada to either flounder or
join with the United States. Mr. Levesque ap-
parently, cannot visualize that there is aCanad-
ian nationality or feeling among English-speak-
ing citiz:-ns of this country. Maybe Mr. Levesque
has been looking at some English -Canadians,
but he loesn't know his Canada.
I- ifty years ago nationalism was the order of
the day. Today economics have become import-
ant. Whether one speaks Russian, English, Greek
or French, people -verywhere have one goal -
the attainment of greater material wealth, better
health and more education for youngsters. Are
we in Canada pre -occupied with the trivial
things of life? We believe we are.
Our efforts should be on whether we can
develop the resources of this land for the
benefit of the citizens of Canada whether we
speak French or English is not of the greatest
importance.
It would be better if by the wave of the wand we
Canadians could be perfectly bilingual and
bicultural. But we aren't. In fact most of us
speak English in a world which uses English
more and more.
French-speaking Canadians were not given
equal opportunities in the past but those op-
portunities exist today. All French Canada needs
to be equal is to act equal and put its energy
into the Canadian Confederation. Let's go.
Postmen will soon be equipped with an animal
repellent spray to keep dogs from biting them.
In In 1966 704 dog bites resulted in 889 days
lost time for Lhe postmen. The repellent comes
from the pepper plant and has no lasting harm-
ful effect on .dogs or humans. It will leave a
yellowish coloration on a dog's hair but thiscan
be removed by washing.
A record total of nearly $96 million worth
of 1967 Ca;.ada Savings Bonds have been pur-
chased in Ontario through the payroll savings
prog"- am this year.
Dec. 2 Duty Day
Next Saturday December 2nd. is Grey Cup
Day and millions of Canadians will spend
most of that da, glued to the television set
watching the game of the year.
The game, however, does not start until aft-
ernoon, and this leaves plenty of time for
Pickering ratepayers and voters to zip down
to the p:)lling station and cast their ballets.
So, if any voter is a keen football fan it
would seem like a good idea to head out to
that responsibility called "voting".
Says Toronto Real Estate Board
Metro Tops In
Metro's construction boom is outpacing dev-
elopment in other major cities in North America
according to a survey released last week by the
Toronto Real Estate Board.
`One might conclude that Metro is in the
throes of a great depression by reading recent
news reports,'said President of the TREB E.

W. Dempster, but the truth is that Toronto is
experiencing the greatest building boom in
history.'
The TREB reports that building permits were
issued in October in Metro for an all-time re-
cord of $84,312,470. This was almost three
times last year's October total of $29,811,904.
For the first 10 months of this year a record
$518,812.360 permits w,: re issued compared to
$480,774,932 in the same period last year.
'Metro has lapped Montreal and is taking dead
aim at such giants as New York, Chicago, and
Los Angeles for first place in volume of con-
struction," said Mr. Dempster. 'These areas
have populations 2 1/2 times great --r than
Metro.'
Are you tuned to your TV set?
Have you I"jeen out to vote yet?
These are the questions for next Saturday
We hope you'll win and shout a loud hooray
Remember football time will soon be past
Bu" your Pickering taxes they will last.
So think first about whom to vote
So Council won't get your goat
If your man get put in there
You'll be able to stay in your chair
And wstch the Grey Cup game next year
But without the usual voting fear.
Development
He said its about time for everyone, citizens,
newsmen and businessmen alike, to boost Metro.
-If this great metropolis, the richest and fast-
est growing economic region in the worldtoday,
cannot solve its problems, then in what kind
of shape are such cities as Calcutta, Rio de
Jantero and Hong Kong?'
With Mr. Dempster's 'think pusitively about
Toronto's future' message in mind the Real
Estate Board has published a 100 -page book
fully illustrated in color entitled 'Toronto '67.'
Thoroughly researched, warmly written and
beautifully illustrated, the book is a positive
examination of this metropolitan region as it
exists in 1967.
The survey shows that in 1.67 Scarborough
issued $10,960,104 worth of building permits in
October compared to $5,378,424 for the same
month last year. Figures for the year show
Scarborough issuing $85,456,683 in building
permits compared to $81,239,430 for the same
period last year.
Consider Changing To Metric System - Ontario Hydro
Britain's decision to
metrify has sparked
renewed inter•: -1 in
Canada and the Unite,,
States. Both the Can-
adian Standards As-
sociatijn and the Can-
adian Council of Pro-
fessional Engineers
have urged the Federal
Government to make
an in-depth study. In
the U.S., the American
Society of Testic:g and

Metric proponents
p%,int out that the U.S.
and Canada are be-
coming inc.-easingly
isolated and that con -

mnunt as their econ-

say de .,e •)ping nations
will become less en-
thusiastic about im-
ports which don't con-
form to their stand-
ards.
Canada, however, can
hardly ca. -vert to met-
ric independently of
the U.S. because of
their closely interre-
lated economies. But
she might seriously
consider doing 'bil-
ingual' in measuring
systems while waiting
it out.
Some familiaritywith

Fight Residentialists
Councillor Ronald Chatten is seeking the pos-
ition of deputy -reeve of Pickering. Mr. Chatten
has been a strong foe of subdivisions which hay.-
no industrial assessment.
"I have steadily fought resideatialists' he told
his audience last week, and he said that he has
been forced to meet the deputy minister of
municipal affairs about subdivisions be!ng pro-
cessed by Pickering.
He warned the voters that 'one devel 3ner golds

lower Hydro Costs
Don Hopki is is opposing Mr. Chatten for the
deputy-reeveship. Mr. Hopkins probably gives
the funniest speeches of all the candidate:,, but
after getting his audiences in a good mood, he
gets down to serious matter-.
He said that he told Council to hav^ its own
Hydro system as i- would lower =osts and there-
fore aid in getting industry into Pickering.
However, he said that council gave up after its
first i.ry at Queen's Park.
He told West Rouge residents 'you did get your
par': --:ts up on Brock Road North'.
He figures that the new council should work a•..
a team as running the township was a big bus-
iness.
Mr. Hopkins spent the last five years of his
15 years of residence in Pickering serving on
the township's Recreation and Parks Board.
One of his q-ips was that the defi.iition of a
state is: 'Frame for guiding the Blind'.

Mr. Laycox said that there was a "serious
rift of personalities on council". He feels that
council members should be elected from over•
the township a- a w::ole, rather than repre-
senting one par'icular ward.
`You t?link our taxes are Nigh --but we're
not unique" declared the reev--. He said that
new moves by the provincial government will
`reduce taxer considerably".
In answer to other critics, Mr. Laycox said
that in 1964 the industrial assessment was 7 per
cent, but now in 1967 it was 15 ver cent.
He pointed out that Pickering Council only
controls 25 out of the over 100 mills charged
to the ratepayers.
'Supreme Aluminum could conceivatly come

that a new police building wc-'d be !atilt at the
end o` the year.
`Don't let a state run )•jur affairs" warned

post --reeve. Jean McPherson said that she had no strings

that `if I'm elected reeve believe me i'11 be and energy to the job as reeve. She said that
heard". if you do work you are bound to make enemies.
The widow with the Tennessee accent kept the
audience in laughter as she told how she was
against the agreement with the developer of Bay
Ridges. However, she said that councillors ur-
ged her to make it unanimous and `stupid me
waaY it unanimous".
Mrs. McPherson said that there has been so
much friction and so much waste of time at
councK late -11I that sl;e has left at different
times.
"But I would stay till 3 a.m. in order to get
business done' she declared.
Mrs. McPherson said: `If we are in a mess,
let's not blame it on the pre. ent council --it

SQUARE DANCE NEWS
by Mollie Elliot
You'd think one New
Years' party a year
would be quite enough -
but last week I heard
a group of square dan-
cers planning for two
this year! They had,
happily discovered
that square dance
clubs holding parties
in their regular school
locations will cele-
brate on the 3fkh, but
private parties are
planned for the 31st.
Anyone unfamiliar
with modern square
dancing might suppose
two nights in a
row could get monot-
onous -but there's so
much variety offered,
and so many delightful
new routines :o learn,
there's no time to be
bored!
While the last events
of Centennial Year are
being held, the Com-
mittee for Toronto &
District International
Square Dance Con-
vention is busily or-
ganizing the 7th annual
convention, Rcyal
York Hotel, May 30,
31, June 1. During
those three days Lhe
hotel will resound to
modern music and the
beat of dancing feet,
when nearly 3000 dan-
cers take over the en-
tire convention floor.
Last year visitors at-
tended from Europe,
Asia, theU.S.andCan-
ada and the committee
expects the usual
"sold -out` signs to go
up early in 1968. Rep-
resenting various cen-
tres around Metro, the
committee members
are: Chairman Bill &
Barbara Cooper,
Cooksville; Bert &
Ruth Oakes, Burling-
ton; Ken & Eleano And-
ison, Agincourt; Ernie
& Joan Carviei, Ham-

Norm Wilcox, Bram-
alea, was guest caller
for Swingin' Sqs_ares,
Port Credit, Nov. 15.
and for Galt Swingin'
8's on No.18th. These
dates were part of a
fall calling tour fo-
this popular young cal-
ler who visited clubs
i -n Ottawa, Kingston
and St. Catharines, and
will call for Barrie's
Beaux & Belles in
January, and the Lon-
don Festival in April.
Norm, on staff for
the 1968 convention, is
regular caller for
Bramalea's Circle B;
and Acton's Pairs &

Toronto Squares.

News from Ancaster:
Jack & Evelyn Hogan's
Swingaways Club vis-
ited the Ontario Hos-
pital in October dem-
onstrating square dan-
cing and getting the
patients to participate.
S/D clubs devote many
hours, sharing their
favourite recreation in
various hospitals.
Square dancing is. al-
ways popular, the
patients say, because
they don't just sit and
watch, but join in and
have fun too.

Potato Bin
Green spotting and all
excessively sweet
taste can sometimes
result when potatoes
are improperly
stored. In order to
maintain the high qual-
ity and excellent flavor
of Ontario potatoes
during long storage•
keep potatoes in a :ool
dark place at a t--mp-
erature of 41 to 50de-
grecs F.
The dare. • wess will
stop the growth of
green spots, caused by
exposure to light. If
the storage temper-
ature is too low, the
potatoes may develop
a;. -: xcessively sweet
taste. However, this
taste change can be
reversed by holding
the potatoes at room
temperature (70 to 80
degrees F) for one or
two weeks before use,
says the Food Council
Ontario Dept. of Agri-
culture -,..d Food.
