Opposing Stories
Case Is Dismissed
Opposing stories of
an accident near the
Teepee Drive - In
Theatre last July
caused dismissal of a
careless driving
charge against Paul
Little by Magistrate
Donald Dodds in Pick-
ering Magistrates'
C ourt.
According to Thomas
Wilcox. 18, driver of
the motorcycle struck
by Mr. Little's car,
he was coming north
on Liverpool Rd., from
the Hwy. 401 ramp to-
wards the theatre.
On slowing to turn
left into the theatre
parking area, he was
hit from behind. He
said be has not passed
Mr. Little's car or
any other as he ap-
proached the Teepee.
But Mr. Little test-
ified that as he ap-
proached the theatre,
he say a cycle oa his
right that seemed to
be crowding him to
the left. It moved in
front of his car and
slowed to such an ex-
tent that he had no
time to avoid the col-
lision.
Lawrence O'Carroll
15, usher at the Tee
Pee, said he heard
tires skid, turned, and
saw the motorcycle's
rear end under the
front of a car.
The police officer
testifying, stated that
there were skid marks
one foot left of the
centre line of Liver-
pool Rd; and said he
thought the cycle had
"made a very wild
turn,' and the driver
of the car had no
chance to avoid im-
pact.
Officer for the Crown
Constable Edwards,
said that in his opinion,
the driver of the car
had been travelling at
an excessive rate of
speed, thus saw the
cycle but was unable
to stop.
Magistrate Dodds
said the testimony of
Lawrence O'Carroll
was 'of little value'
as he had not seen
events prior to the
crash. And, that in
view of the conflicting
testimony of Mr. Lit-
tle and Mr. Wilcox, he
had no choice but to
rule dismissal.
No Matter

Magistrate Dodds in
Pickering court when
Richard Dyback, 19
was charged with
drinking under age.
The accused pro-
tested that the charge

made because he had

ering.
fie had been appre-
hended on Valley Farm
Road with 'an o3or of
alcohol' on his breath
an officer testified.
M:. Dyback had not
been taken into
custojy.
'If it's a crime, why
didn't you take m- in?'
queried the young man.
The officer testifying
explained to the Mag-
istrate that Mr. Dy -
back had `pleaded with
me not to lock him up.'
Magistrate Dadds
ordered a $50 fine or
10 days.
'Can I have time to
pay it?' asked the
youth. *I'm working.'
'No time to pay."
Those under age are
not given time to pay,
it was explained.
No Problem!
Long - haired young
men are no staff prob-
lem at the Scarborough

For years the com-
pany, in the interests
of personnel safety,

calling for women to
wear hair nets in pro-
duction jobs. The reg-
ulation was recently
amended to include
men with long hair.
The reason: a safety
regulation .requiring
long-haired youths to
wear hair nets, just
like female production
employees.
`Short haircuts are
now general among our
male production em-
ployees,' the Gage

vorts.

Our Post Office
Recently we almost had a 1 day strike of postal
employees in protest at the lack of pay which
they think should have been paid for a federal
holiday on July 3rd.
It is distressing to watch the post office over
the past 25 years slowly but inevitably decay
away. We have keen (some, anyway) people
making the postal service their way of life.
But changes to keep up the times has been al-
most nil.
And change could have taken place woich would
have kept the men's morale high, the service
tops and the system good.
Not many of the people who pay for the post
office- you and I -realize but the government has
had a report for some time, a report which
details all of the progressive action needed to
Improve the postal service as a whole.
Little is heard, either, of the $10 million spent
developing two or three kinds of computer to
sort mail, none of which are in real operation.
We urge federal authorities to do something
soon before the whole essential service of post
office blows up in their face -and our pocket-
book! The Post Office oadly needs reorgan-
ization FROM THE: TOP DOWN.
We suggest that the Post Office become a
crown corporation with a competent admin-
istrator instead of a political appointee at the
top, who might or might not have any influence
on government policy. Let's take the postal
service out of politics. Did you know that none
of the buildings or trucks of the post office
are owned by the post office? With a crown
corporation this could all change. The post
office could operate its own buildings, its own
trucks and equipment. With a renewed morale
factor. encouragement could be given to men
and women to join the new organization.
The computers already designed should be put
into operation in big centres such as Toronto in
order to give delivery efficiently, instead of
"maybe' in a few days. Automation is necessary
in the postal service in order to make up for
the lack of skilled help.
Action is needed to m,3dernize the postal ser-
vice. Are there big enough m --n at Ottawa to
carry out such a move?
Did You Know That
With the exception of mallard ducks and white
fronted goose, populations of ducks and geese
are at improved levels and the daily bag of
various birds has been increased in Alberta,
Saskatchewan and Manitoba. The bag and pos-
session limits in Ontario are five and ten for
ducks, five and 10 for geese, 10 and 20 for
Wilson's snipe and 8 and 1 6 for woodcock.
The Canadian Wildlife Service will built a wild-
life centre near Midland, Ontario. The centre
will be closely associated with both Provincial
wildlife developments in the Wye Lake marsh
and the Huronia Development historic site com-
plex and there will be nature trails and outdoor
exhibits there for viewing by the public.
The Saga Of Sir John A's Bust
(The late Julian Ferguson, Federal Member for
Simcoe North was a very close friend of the
author's. Of the many political stories he told,
:he disappearance of Sir John A. Macdonald's
bust was humorous)
John A. Browne, Collingwood, Ontario.
They say it was down at the Albany Club -next
door to Hotel King Eddy.,
That the Tories were due to gather -but ar-
rangements weren't quite ready.
Dief the Chief was due to visit nis serfs... it
was back in fifty-nine
And all true blue believers had paid fifty bucks
to dine.
The Committee in charge of arranging the
bash, 'tween drinks had fretted and fussed,
When one, a keen -eyed senator, said "We must
clean Sir John A's bust"
For untold years from the mantel, Sir John's
grim visage had peered
And no tory salute could be complete, unless
Sir John A. was revered.
Committee members all agreed the bust was
very dirty
After discussion (and another round of drinks)
they started at ten -thirty,
Adjourning to a private room, the bust was
placed in the sink
To soak off the accumulated grime of time (and
they had another drink)
Three hours and a few rounds later, one mem-
ber glanced in the john
With a startled expression be shouted `Sir
John A's bust is gone"
It was true that the marble -like statue, so per-
fect without any fault
Was actually made of a mixture ninety nine
percent of which was salt.
Man may immortality get -his share of honour
gain
But if his statue of salt soaks long enough, he'll
flow right down the drain,
So the great emergency arose, with the com-
mittee locked in woe
A quick solution must be found -with just sixty
hours to go.
The Senator sighed and muttered low "I felt
all along we'd rue it"
But the member said "There's a quick brain
here -Why don't we let George do it?
The quandry was explained to George, who said
"There might be a way -
There's a similar bust in Kingston, though it
happens to be Laurier."
I doubt anyone notices the difference, for they
both had long dark hair
So the substitute statue was ordered and next
day, by express, it was there.
The dinner went off with a flourish -with the
great, near -great & the meek
Hand clasping, back slapping and joking -but at
the statue never a peek.
For many months thereafter, Sir Wilfred looked
down at them all
From his perch atop of the mantel -in the Tories'
Albany Hall
Tory hearts still beat with excitement, when
they crowd at the leader's call
Little knowing for months they were watched
by -the greatest liberal of all.
Reminiscing, the senator reflected 'George
thought quick -got us out of a mess
He's the man we should have as our leader -
without doubt the party's best guess
For all leaders can't walk on water ... instead,
he shouid ardently strive
To lead without fear or favor and so keep this
great nation alive.

See The Big Shows!
by Gwen Fawthrop
This is the month that
the local flower shows
start in abundance.
You can see the
largest commercial
show at the C.N.E.
which is open this year
on Sunday. Unfortun-
ately, I have not been
able to see the big show
as yet, so I cannot tell
.you anything about it.
While you are at the
Ex, take a stroll along
the Rose garden at the
water front. The
Parks Department has
been busy little beaver
the past few weeks get-
ting the grounds into
shape for the big Fair
and as usual they are
at their best now, al-
though the roses will
be blooming again
later this month.
If you are unable to
attend the fair you
could take a trip down
after as the grounds
are open.
The local Horticult-
ural Societies are
holding their Annual
flower shows this
month and next, so
watch this paper and
the dailies for the time
and place.
Markham Fair which
Is at the end of Sept.
Is at the end of Sept-
ember also has alarge
flower section with
large exhibits from six
local horticultural
societies.
Crabgrass is getting
a very nice head of
seeds now. The only
way to effectively rid
your lawn of this is to
use a crabgrass spray.
Do not get any of this
on any of your plants
or shrubs as it will
kill them.
If you have crabgrass
in your garden, give it
a good soaking and you
will be able to pull it
out as it has shallow
roots. Destroy them
by burning as this is
the only way to get
rid of the seeds.
If you place them on
your compost pile, you
will only be putting it
back into your garden
and you will have the
same problem allover
again.
Keep up with the
spraying for the bugs
and slugs are having a
field day this year. A
INSURANCE POOR ?
liquid spray is better
than a dust for with a
rain, the dust washes
off, the same if you
water. A liquid will
last much longer and
give better results.
The slugs are having
a feast, so get some
slug bait and use if for
the wet weather that
we have had this year
has been to their
liking.
Keep all the blooms
picked off your plants
and they will continue
to bloom in abundance
for you. The petunias
should be pinched off
for if you just pull off
the flower they will
still set seed.
If you find that you
have some that have
gone to seed and it is
ripe, you can tell if it
Is dry enough that it
will split open without
any difficulty. You can
save it and plant it
next year. They may
not come true, but it
can be used. Ifindthat
portulaca, petunia and
dahlias can be saved
easily.
