Young Rebels
Young people today seem to be in revolt against
the older generation. This fact became evident
last week at a Federal - Provincial Student
Seminar which was held at Waterloo. The
young Associate Director of the Company of
Young Canadians urged the students to "start
organizing in their own schools."
He said high school students should be allowed
to decide on their dress and extra curricular
activities and he believes university students
should be allowed to participate on the Board
of Go+ernors of universities and have a greater
say in the governing of the universities.
He summed up his observations which included
the "older generation rushing a bill through
the senate on LSD without considering medical
research" by stating "The older generation is
scared of -us. More young people want to have
the responsibility of making their own decisions,
but the older generation is denying them this
opportunity. "
It is all very well for these young people to
want freedom -- but we wonder if they are
prepared to pay the price for this freedom.
It is brave and fine to criticize the "older
generation" when you are sitting at a seminar
in clothes bought for you by your parents,
with money in your pocket given to you by them
and with a car in the parking lot provided for
your convenience by "the older generation"
but it wajld be entirely different if you had
provided all these amenities yourself.
F re:dom is a fine thing when you can handle
it -- but to turn over the handling of our uni-
versities to the irresponsible attitudes of some
of the young folks wauld be to commit academic
pari-kari. These yojng people may have many
brilliant ideas, but they haven't the wisdom
or experience to select the good from the bad,
the grain from the chaff. By the time they have
reached the age when they can be on the Uni-
versity Boards of Governors, they will have
matured enough to perhaps know what is a good
idea and what is a rash and hotheaded scheme.
We have no quarrel with these young people
wanting to look like wild things if they wish, but
we do object to the suggestion that the "older
generation" is "running scared" as the term
goes, from the youth of today.

AN ASSISTANT PROFESSOR OF JOURNALISM
in the United States has discovered a belief
that a managing editor must have a college
education with a "major" in journalism.
The fact is that a managing editor should
be well-educated, whether or not he has
certificates showing that he has graduated from
a school of journalism or the equivalent. There
have been in the past many great editors who did
not attend college.

the square dancers
who want to put away
their dancing shoes for
three months! Summer
programs of modern

be held in various cen-

For newer square

here's a made-to-or-

classes in beginner

during the summer by
the Codners and Wif-

Elderly homeowners will be able to take some
of the strain off their heavy porperty tax burden
this year if their local government takes ad-
vantage A legislation introduced here this week.
'1 he province would finance what, in effect, would
be ince rest -free loans for tax deferrment to per-
sons over 65. The system might give some
immediate relief but it doesn't solve tha real
problem - it merely transfers it to the next
generation since the payments become a lien
against property. The only real solution is for
the province to assume 80 per cent of the total
costs of education over a four or five - year
period.
Following th,: next provincial general election,
there will be 17 members of the legislature -
nine more than at present. But while they=
will be a bigger group of representatives, we
won't have a better system of. conducting pjblic
business until important reforms are imple-
mt cited.
I discussed this matter in a recent CBC
television broadcast and I think it's worth rais-
ing here as well. The legislature itself is a
majestic old room in the Toronto Parliament
Buildings which bears all the markings of the
Brisith parliamentary history it represents.
The difficulty is that many of the rules and
procedures wiIich were devised in this setting
- in the last century - are inadequate to deal
with the present -day business of the legis-
lature. There must be a streamlining of the
rules to provide for a full and free exchan§e
of ideas from all sides of the house. It s
impartant, too, that individual citizens and
groups of citizens - whether they be farmers,
doctors or laboir union people - should have
access to some area where they can tome
and publicly state their ov:i views to us from
a position of involvement.
W,.• must also ensure that the government
and its agencies are fully aceo.,ntable to the
people of the province. Coron•_rs, for instance,
should not come under direct political control.
And protection agencies such as the Provincial
AuJitur and the Ontario Securities Commission
should be solely responsible to the legislature,
not to the guvernmant. They must be placed in
a position w,iere they can carry out their re-
spunsibilities without fear or favour and in the
best interests )f the citzens of this province.

The Annual f=ireworks Display will be held on
Ston. May 22nd, in the Old South Park (on the
east side of Fairport Road, south of Oklahoma
near the Lake). Tickets are $100 per family
and are available from Mr. Dennis Sherwin or
any other member of the Executive. Proceeds
will go to the Recreation Committee to offset
recreational costs that cannot be covered under
the budget.
One of the social events planned by the West
Shore Association for the Centennial Year was
held at Annandale Golf and Curling Club on Sat.
May 6th, when the Centennial Ball took place.
The hall was decorated with flags, streamers and
Centennial banners in keeping with the important
occasion. On arriva: each guest was presented
with a Centennial Maple Leaf lapel pin. A large
number of residents and their friends turned
out for the event, and there were many beautiful
formals worn as well as many lovely short gowns.
Music was provided by 'The Sapphires" who
really kept up a swinging pace.
Apologies go to Crest Hardware, who were
ommited from last week's article as a donor of
a door prize.
Buffet
The 'Help Yourself" buffet was most enjoyable
and the Social Chairman, Mrs. Pat Jones, wishes
to thank all the girls on her committee who
helped to make it so. If you were unfortunate
enough to be unable to attend this dance you
really missed a great time, so watch the local
press for the announcement of our next dance
and be sure to plan on being there and joining in
the fun.

Because of the heavy rains last week it was
necessary to call off the work scheduled for Sat.
May 13th. Frees have been delayed until Sat.

enforced by Mother Nature herself. twice the
number of volunteers are needed for this coming

schedule. The first of the playground equipment
will also be moved. Call Paul Hrynkiw at 839-

event of the week in the legislature and discus-
sion revolves around the extend and nature of
federal government involvement in the proposed
'Confederation for Tomorrow Conference'.
I agree with the government that the conference
wjuld make a useful contribution tounderstand-
ing the nation's present constitutional problems
and in laying the groundw-irk for federal - pro-
vincial harmony in the ,future. But it is im-
perative that the federal government be in-
volved not only in the conference itself, but in
the planning of it, so that it, so that it does not
becume a means for a few of the provinces to
ally themselves in an attempt to encroach upon
Ottawa's powers.

The most notable thing about the motherhood
bit in Annette's family is her grandmother. But
first, let's explain that Annette is a milk choco-
late -coloured standard poodle owned by Fred
Thompson whohas onened the Pampered Poodle
in West Hill recently - a beauty parlor
for all glamour - minded pooches as well as
the fluffy French variety.
Annette's grandmother was so keen on mother-
hood that when one of her daughters (Annette's
mother) was in the process of producing her first
litter, and having trouble with the sudden influx
of responsibility, this mistress of matriarchy
took over and cleaned up several of the progeny
and, much to the amazement of her owner, pro-
ceeded to suckle them as well.
The only possible explanation for this pheno-
mina lies in the realm of mind over matter:
Her tremendous desire to mother the babies
has caused her body to produce the necessary
mills! And from then on, the litter was divided
between the mother and daughter, who, when
styling in his West Rouge home for sometime
and loves anything to do with dogs and dog shows.
His new shop, on Kingston Rd. opposite the
Odeon Theatre, has been decorated in the red
velvet and roccoco white and gold of France in
the days of the Louis'. A posh traditional setting
for his proteges and customers.
At his home, one is assailed with the friend-
liness of Annette's 18 -month-old daughter, Hug-
gins, a black standard, and Lady who looks like
Huggins' twin - but isn't,Lady belongs to Fred's
wife. All three have been the guardians of Mrs.
Thompson while Fred has been auditing the
books for the Penthouse Motor Inn every night.
An interesting feature of show dog breeding
Is the choosing of show and call names. Hug-
gins' show name is Love and Kisses. What
goes with love and kisses? Huggin'. Another
prize winner, unfortunately now deceased, had
as her show name, Smiies'N Chuckles. So what
was her call name? Candy, naturally.
School Trustees & Ratepayers To Meet
School Board (PTSA #2) and the presidents
of the southern ratepayer groups have reached
unanimous agreement that it would be desir-
able to meet and discuss together the con-
tinuing roll of education in School Area #2.
At the initiative of the board, the presidents
of various ratepayer groups were invited to
attend a meeting on May 17th. In a letter
dated May 8th, John Kruger of the West Rouge
Ratepayers' Association suggested certain
terms of reference for the meeting. The Board
rejected the terms in their letter of May 11th
and Mr. Kruger has now verbally responded
to the Board.
Due to insufficient time being available to
work out a meeting format agreeable to both
the Board and the Ratepayer groups, the meet-
ing scheduled for May 17th has been temporar-
ily postponed. However, discussions are con-
tinuing with a view to finding an agreeable
meeting format.

West Rouge Youth
Bowlers Hold Banquet
The third annual banquet for the West Rouge
Youth Bowling League was held at the West
Rouge Bowling Lanes last Saturday May 13th.
This league started three years ago by Dennis
St. Dennis with only 35 young bowlers now to-
tals 150 boys and girls between six and fifteen
years of age. The committee has the idea that
for the coming season the age limit should be
extended to 21.
Dennis St. Dennis, the organizer, George
and Shelie Newton were the Supervisors; Mary
Roberts, the Treasurer; Al Robbins and Bill
Franklin the two instructors with Jim Watts
and Vic Stewart also giving their assistance
plus the big help of Jack Fine proprietor of
the alley.
The West Rouge Bowling League is run every
Saturday morning starting in September and
continues to the end of April finishing up with
an annual banquet which includes the presen-
tation of trophies. As an example of the in-
terest this league has in its bowlers a bus
brings the Bay Ridges children to the West
Rouge Alley and back.
The parents are all full of praise for the com-
mittee and their only regret is that they are
losing the organizer, Mr. St . Dennis. He is
being transferred to Guelph and promoted.
Both Mr. & Mrs. St. Dennis regret the move
as they have made so many new friends.
