THURSDAY JULY 20, 2023 Downtown Oshawa securitycomes at a cost, and it's a growingone. But it's a cost that Greater Oshawa Chamber of CommerceCEO Jason King seems to under-stand and supports. And the $2.467-million annualbill for the corporate securityfirm Logixx Security, which the city pays to staff local city build- ings and patrol the downtownfrom 7 p.m. to 7 a.m., is reinforcedby the many incidents the firm has handled.A breakdown of the work doneby the firm shows that it had 5,992 interactions in 2022, up from 5,238 in 2021 and 5,035 in 2020.The numbers were actuallymuch lower pre-pandemic, when security interactions in andaround city facilities were as low Jason King, CEO of the Greater Oshawa Chamber of Commerce, said he appreciated the work done by Oshawa's corporate security team and said people needed to feel safe when shopping and working downtown. Lifestyle Options Lifestyle Apartments Assisted Living Memory Care Enriched Care I had a conversation afew years ago with a couplein their late seventies. Theyhad decided to sell theirhome and rent an apart- ment. They shared with methat they had been in thehome for decades and want-ed to remain, but when they reviewed their situation, renting became the best op-tion. I did some work re-searching their decision, and it made perfect sense. Ifyou live in Durham Region, property taxes on a homeare in the $5,000 to $8,000range. As people age and be- gin to hire companies to domaintenance, it is not un-common to spend upwardsof $2,500 yearly on yard maintenance and snow re-moval. Add to that insur-ance that is upwards of $1,500 a year, and the cost ofliving in a home with nomortgage can be in the range of $10,000 to $15,000 ayear. Rentals in Durham Re-gion for a two-bedroom apartment range between$2,000 and $2,500 per month. That means on the high side, an apartment will costaround $30,000 a year. So, ahomeowner trades $15,000 ayear in home costs for $30,000 in rental accommo-dation. How does this makesense? Let's take a deeper dive. The average detachedhome in Durham Region isselling for around $1,000,000, and after sellingexpenses, moving costs andother expenses, the sellerwould pocket around$930,000 (assuming the sell-er has no mortgage.) Invest-ed in a low-risk investment that pays a four per cent re-turn, their home equitywould generate around$35,000 per year in after-tax income. Once the home-owner sells and rents, theirinvestment pays for more than their rental accommo-dation. I have spoken with manyolder homeowners about how inflation and the risingcosts of home ownership isstressing them out, such that renting has become aconsideration. Many home-owners have their life sav-ings invested in the home they live in and, given the upand down values of our mar-ket pre- and post-pandemic, the risk of values droppingis another factor in whetherto move into a rental. Another reason is therising cost of rental apart-ments. With so many peopleopting for rentals, rents have been rising, in manycases faster than home val-ues. Over the past year, rents in Toronto have in-creased more than 20 percent, and closer to home,Oshawa rents have jumped up by 12 per cent. A two-bed-room apartment in Picker-ing is on average $2,560 a month. We are at a time in Onta-rio where there are too fewhomes for sale to meet de- mand and too many tenantslooking for rental stock thatis hard to find. We have notseen a "normal" market for the longest time, and itlooks like we are in uncer-tain times for the next few years. My advice to the cli-ents I am chatting with, ifthey find themselvesstressed out by home own- ership, is to do a breakdownof the costs of owning theirhome along with what they can expect if their equity isinvested. Then they shoulddo some research on avail-able rental accommodation. Sometimes selling and rent-ing makes sense and, withmore mortgage rate in- creases in the future, thismight be the right time tomake a move. Therewere 450 incidents of med-ical intoxication/drug useduring 2022, or more thanone a day.Three of the top five lo- cations for Logixx interac-tions took part in the city'slarge downtown above-ground parking facilities. The McLaughlin Band-shell (Memorial Park) andcity hall were the other two major targets, with theMcLaughlin branch of theOshawa Public Library, theRobert McLaughlin Gal- lery, Lakeview Park, theJohn Street Bridge andBrick Valley Park round- ing out the top 10.For King, the securityservice seems to be "thebest way to be handling our downtown concerns."He said it's importantthat for businesses to suc- ceed, "people have to feelcomfortable downtown. We want to invite peopledowntown and have them feel safe."That's been the argu-ment in having corporatesecurity over the past half- dozen years or so in Osha-wa, to help divert the Dur-ham Regional Police Ser- vice (DRPS) toward man-aging more high-profilecriminal activity. The job of corporate se- curity is to be "deescala-tors," according to the chairof the safety and facilities services committee, Reg.Coun. Brian Nicholson. He said the increasing in contacts over the last six years can be explained bythe number of people need-ing social services coming to Oshawa."We have communitiesin Durham and beyondDurham that are coming to Oshawa, and therefore thedensity in problems in Dur-ham is increasing," saidNicholson. And he said there wouldbe 90 security cameras add-ed to the downtown area as part of a $250,000 invest-ment in the capital budget. What's happening inOshawa is having an influ- ence on Oshawa's Durhamneighbours as well, withthe city getting a $500,000 contribution to its corpo-rate security budget at aMay 10 regional committeeof the whole meeting. Backed by a passionateplea from Oshawa MayorDan Carter for support at that meeting, 25 membersof Durham council agreedto support Oshawa. The mayor made the case that Oshawa's prob-lems of homelessness, drugaddition, mental health is-sues and assorted otherproblems were not thecity's alone and needed re-gional help. Carter said that over a13-month period, therewere over 7,000 incidentsdealt with in Oshawa by corporate security, includ-ing over 5,200 between 7p.m. and 7 a.m. He also made the case that "1,117calls were diverted fromDurham Regional Police,"indicating that corporate security was helping to sub-sidize police operations.Carter did say 281 calls were made to the DRPS by corpo-rate security."I'm asking the Region to help us tonight, because this vulnerable populationneeds the help tonight," saidCarter. Oshawa regionalcouncillors Brian Nichol-son, Rick Kerr, Bob Chap-man and John Neal also re-quested regional support at the May 10 meeting.Ajax Reg. Coun. Mari-lyn Crawford said she un-derstands the needs of Osh- awa for corporate security."A few years ago, Iwouldn't have understood this issue. Our situation (inAjax) isn't nearly as severeas Oshawa. I feel we're ayear or two from the same situation as Oshawa, so Isupport Mayor Carter,"said Crawford. Pickering Reg. Coun.Maurice Brenner said, "It'svery touching and very sadwhat's happening in Osha- wa. We need collectively tosupport the city of Oshawa. It's only a matter of time ... before other municipali-ties such as the city of Pick-ering will be experiencing(difficult issues)," he said. In past years, regionalstaff had recommendedagainst support by region-al council for Oshawa's re-quest. But this year, re-gional council, by a vote of25-2, agreed to support Oshawa for up to 50 percent, or $500,000, of Osha-wa's service.Indeed, Oshawa added $893,000 to its budget in2023 for a corporate securi-ty-dedicated downtown pa- trol. That's on top of the$1,534,500 the city spendsalready on corporate secu-rity services on the con- tract with Logixx.Members of the Logixxteam can be seen in vehi- cles, at city facilities andpatrolling in the downtownarea. In the firstedition, potato chips edged outsandwiches for the best road trip snack. Now we're looking for ourreaders' input again to decide thebest ice cream flavour. Weigh inwith your favourite and see if ithas what it takes to become the ul-timate ice cream flavour. It should have been every kid's dream. When you're 10 years old andthe doctor puts you on a diet ofmilkshakes for seven weeks, well, you don't argue with a high-ly trained medical professional. To make it even better, "Star Wars" had just been released onvideo, which made me among thefirst to get to watch Luke Sky-walker repeatedly whine about not being able to go into ToscheStation to pick up power convert-ers. Oh yeah, I didn't have to go to school either. Now, the events leading to thisgood fortune, I don't recommend.I took a baseball to the side of the face, breaking my jaw. Thatmeant having my jaw wired shutfor seven weeks. Seven weeks of people waving hamburgers andfries in my face saying, "Oh,would you like some?"But I had the last laugh. Re- venge is best served cold, with astraw.Ice cream for breakfast. Ice cream for lunch. Oh, feel like asnack? How about ice cream? Butwon't that ruin my dinner, you ask? Nope, because dinner is icecream. Now there was one catch. Ten-year-old me was a very picky eat- er and not very adventurous. So itwas vanilla ice cream every time. Not that there is anything wrong with vanilla. It's a solid choice. But is it the best flavour? Especially, if you're using it tomake 350 milkshakes. Sure, in retrospect, the odd chocolatemilkshake might have mixedthings up a little. A cookies-and- cream milkshake sure soundsgood now. But not to 10-year-oldme, who had yet to figure out piz-za is awesome even if there was a bunch of different foods all to-gether, touching each other! The milkshake diet was pretty sweet. But after a couple ofweeks, I noticed the milkshakesmy mom made weren't as good. They tasted different. Mine were much better. Was she using different icecream? Had she mixed up the ra- tio of milk to ice cream? It wasn't until years later Ifound out this dark family secret.Something the doctor had failed to mention while I was in theroom. Apparently, scrawny 10-year- olds can't live on ice cream alone.Apparently, they need protein. So while I wasn't watching, mom was slipping eggs into my milkshakes. Eggs? In the same glass as myfrothy milkshake? Did you think I wouldn't notice?Well, I did. But I never foundthe proof that my milkshakes hadindeed changed. I'd like to say this ruined vanil-la ice cream forever. But it didn't.Still love a good vanilla ice cream, but it tainted it. If vanilla ice cream wasn't go-ing to be what I thought it was, maybe it was time to try other fla- vours. The next trip to the Kawar-tha Dairy Bar, I would try some-thing new. Rocky road? Didn't re- ally cut it. Neapolitan? Three icecreams touching each other. Idon't think so. And then came the fateful day I tried mint chocolate chip. Thatwas it. The ice cream flavour totop all ice cream flavours. It's stillmy favourite. The mint of the After Eightchocolates I love so much. Thechocolate chip, the best part of the chocolate chip cookie. Butbest of all? No eggs. The great ice cream flavour brackets are set. An organization that collects and distributes new and used footwear to those in need year round, keeping over 50 000 tonnes of products from going to landfill. BioPed collects brand new shoes and places them directly on the feet of individuals in need, both locally and abroad. Children cannot attend school without shoes, and in many countries a lack of appropriate footwear is a common problem. Providing footwear allows children to become educated and helps to pull families out of poverty. Locally, footwear is provided to shelter’s and organizations, such as the Ukranian relief, to help keep people on their feet. Your donated shoes are used to create micro enterprises that educate women on creating self-sufficient operations as a way out of poverty. This allows women in places such as Haiti and Honduras to purchase low cost products to be re-sold at local markets. By donating gently used footwear you are making an impact too!You are helping to improve the overall health and safety of individuals down on their luck as well as helping many families buy meals, shelter and send their children to school. This is just a hint of howaccess to trusted mediawould be transformed if Me- ta and Google go ahead withthreats to eliminate Canadi-an news from their feeds — a protest against Bill C-18,the federal Online News Actwhich will force the techcompanies to enter into deals with Canadian mediapublishers for using theironline news content. The internet upendedthe traditional media busi-ness model; it brought ourcontent before exponential- ly bigger audiences and bigtech's ability to link to ourcontent helped them gaindominance in digital ad spend, with 80 per cent of all ad revenue in Canada now going to Google and Face-book. Media companies like Torstar, which owns the To-ronto Star and MetrolandMedia newspapers and web-sites, support the law as a necessary tool to get thedominant tech giants to fair-ly compensate news pub- lishers for use of their edito-rial content. Meta and Google havebalked, arguing that ele- ments of the new legislationremain unclear and thatthey are being unfairly forced into financial agree-ments. For context, Meta'sadvertising revenue was$135 billion last year, 97.5 per cent of their total revenue;Google's advertising reve-nue was $224 billion, 80 percent of their total revenue. And even though it willbe months before the law comes into effect, the high stakes battle has begun, with Meta already pullingout of some Canadian news, the federal government re-sponding by halting all itsad spending with the com-pany and numerous media companies — including theStar and Metroland's parentcompany — following suit. Although Google joined Me-ta's opposition to C-18, onlyMeta has taken action so far. With so many issues in the news affecting our com-munities, our province andour country, it's important that whatever actions thetech companies take duringthis dispute, readers contin-ue to have access to the trusted journalism thathelps them understand andnavigate their world. We know that many of our readers come to us viaMeta and Google and there's obviously a risk that those sources could cut off accessduring this tumultuoustime. Terry is survived by his soulmate and beloved wife of 39 years, Beverley (Mason). He will be missed by a special sister-in-law Wendy Mason of Ajax and mother-in-law Marilyn Mason of Whitby; as well as sister Nina (Maurice) Boudreault and brother Jack (late Barb) Briggs, both of Quebec. He is also survived by daughter Crystal Grimes, grandchildren Tanika, Jordan, Bailey and Jacob and one great grandson; and a countless number of nieces and nephews and friends. Terry was predeceased by his parents Charles and Elizabeth Briggs, brother Tom; sisters Doreen (late Bill) Robins and Audrey Trottier. Friends were important to Terry, no more so than his high-school band mates Mike Laing, Bob Downie, Hector McLean, Rob Simpson and Eric Sandford. He will also be forever missed by lifelong friends Brian and Kathy Dahlback of Oshawa. Besides his love of music and playing in a few bands over the years, Terry was an avid fisherman and golfer. Vaca- tions often involved both activities plus an added adventure, such as rafting the Grand Canyon or trick flying in a bi-plane. Following a diagnosis of Parkinsons, in 2022 the decision was made to leave Ajax after 70 years and begin retirement in Brighton-by-the- Bay in the perfect lakeside home. Cremation has occurred. A Celebration of Life will be held at Accettone Funeral Home, 384 Finley Avenue, Ajax, on July 20, 2023 from 11:00 a.m. till time of Service in the Chapel at 12:00 p.m. Thoughts and prayers only, or if desired donations made in Terry's name to the Parkinsons' Society of Canada.
