At the Monday, June 26council meeting, the agen-da included a motion to re- scind the previous appoint-ment of Ward 1 city Coun.Lisa Robinson to the Com-munity Safety and Well-Be- ing Advisory Committee. But in a YouTube videothe week before, Robinson announced she was goingto step down, and notifiedthe City of Pickering. The committee is tasked with co-ordinating oppor-tunities for stakeholderand community engage- ment and providing com-munity input on mattersrelating to the city's com-munity safety and well-be- ing plan.Robinson said in the vid-eo that her appointment was being rescinded for tworeasons: first, because shedid not attend the PickeringCivic Awards, "which is not mandatory in my role ascity councillor," and "as aform of punishment" be-cause she has the "ability to think differently."On the night of the civicawards, Robinson attended a Durham District SchoolBoard meeting, where shewas filmed sharing somenotices of motion she wished to bring to Picker-ing city council and wasseeking support. This in- cluded a motion regardingPride parades and dragqueen shows. Ward 1 regional Coun.Maurice Brenner gave no-tice at the May meeting, shortly after that video wasfilmed, that he was bring-ing forward the motion tohave Robinson's appoint- ment rescinded."This unprecedented ac-tion was in response to four communications fromcommunity associationsand community groupsacross Ward 1," Brenner said at the time, referring topetitions requesting Robin-son's removal. In the video, Robinsonexplains why she was theonly one who voted againstnumerous items that her fellow councillors support-ed."I was the only one to vote against the propertytax increase," she said, asone of many examples. She said people are hav- ing to choose between pay-ing bills, putting gas intheir cars or putting nutri-tious meals on the table for their family. She said committees areformed for the leaders who don't want to make hard de-cisions and it gives themthe opportunity not to takeresponsibility for those de- cisions."For this reason alone, Iwish to step down from my appointment on the Safetyand Well-Being AdvisoryCommittee," she said. "That being said, I will con-tinue to fight for the well-being and safety of all of our community." At the meeting, a longlist of people both in sup-port of and opposed to Rob- inson spoke. Woodville resident RickTroyan, who owns You- Tube media expressionchannel True North Trans-parency, spoke in supportof Robinson. "Clearly Coun. Robinsonis the only member of coun-cil doing all of her home- work and fighting for thesafety and well-being of theentire community as awhole, instead of pander- ing to special interestgroups and virtue signal-ling to political lobbyistgroups such as Pflag," hesaid.President of Pflag Dur-ham Region Jake Starratt- Farr spoke about Robin-son's absence from thePickering Civic Awardsceremony in May. "Her absence was notedby the recipients and by thecommunity at large," he said.He said he understandsshe did not have to attend, but questioned why she wouldn't want to celebrateher community. In the end, Ward 3 city Coun. Shaheen Butt wasappointed to the commit-tee. PICKERING COUNCILLOR STEPS DOWN FROM COMMITTEE Ward 1 city Coun. Right now, we're fo-cused on the $5 million andit might turn out to be $7million. We're not sureyet," he said.Currently, the cam- paign has reached $3 mil-lion.Babin got involved withthe centre when his son was diagnosed with Type 1diabetes when he was 13.That was 18 years ago. "I saw firsthand whatthe centre did for my sonand, more importantly, to the family. His sister, mywife and I. If you don't know what Type 1 diabetesis, it's an auto-immune dis-ease. It's not preventable.Without insulin, death is certain. It's really abouteducation. The challengewith diabetes in Ontarioand the world really is, on-ly about five to seven percent of diabetes cases areType 1. The others are Type 2 or gestational dia-betes, which are different.Your body still producesinsulin," he said. With Type 1, "it's not achoice," Babin said. "Yourbody stops producing in- sulin and you need to on-board insulin every timeyou eat and you need to on- board carbs and sugars ev-ery time you exercise. For my son, it's probably 200 to300 decisions in a day, con-stantly validating hisblood sugars." Without keep bloodsugars in check, it can leadto chronic diseases overtime."We're the only centrethat does specifically Type1diabetes education in Durham Region and in factCanada. There are otherprograms, but they're notdedicated to Type 1, so we feel our registered nurses, our dieticians, our socialworkers, our doctors are more familiar with Type 1because that's all they dealwith," Babin said. It's currently about5,000 square feet, but the addition will increase thatto 11,000."Our vision is to keepchildren and adults healthy until a cure isfound. We're really onlyneeded because there is nocure. So, we continue to ed- ucate people on how totake insulin and how tocount your carbs. What to do during changes in theirlives. Women that get preg-nant or kids that are play-ing professional hockey. We wish there was cure. Ifthere was a cure, we reallywouldn't be required any more or we'd be required alot less. We think there willbe a cure in the next three to five years, maybe 10years," he said.Lorrie Hagan, the CEO of the centre, recently toldthe region's health and so-cial services committeethe centre opened in 1989 by Marlene Grass to pro-vide education and sup-port to people and families who are dealing the Type 1diabetes.Most of the centre's pa-tients are from Durham, but it does provide care toanyone who needs help, she said.Type 1 "is not prevent- able. You didn't do it toyourself. There is no cureand it can strike at any age," Hagan said."Our mission is to keeppeople living with Type 1diabetes, children, youth, adults healthy until a cureis found," she noted. For more information on the campaign, or to con-tribute, visit www.buildin-gonthebest.ca. The offence hewas investigating was not pressing in nature — a non-criminal traffic infrac-tion," Martino wrote. Martino found, howev-er, that the officer's actionsdid not "amount to a marked departure from areasonable standard ofcare in the circumstances."The incident began shortly before 3 a.m. Feb. 20when an officer saw a whiteMercedes-Benz travel through a red light near theHwy. 401 off-ramp to West-ney Road South, accordingto the report. The officer attempted to pull the carover."After seemingly slow- ing for a period, the Mer-cedes-Benz acceleratedaway from the cruiser. The (officer) sped after the Mer-cedes-Benz, reaching a topspeed upwards of 150 km/h, but was unable to get anycloser than a few hundredmetres from the vehicle," Martino found. The report says the offi-cer lost sight of the car, which eventually crashed at Brock Road, striking avehicle that was stopped ata red light. The driver of the Mercedes was taken tohospital with a head injury.Martino concludedthere was no evidence of criminal behaviour on theofficer's part. The SIU investigates in- cidents of serious injury ordeath involving police offi-cers. Residents concernedwith the state of long-termcare (LTC) in Ontario madetheir concerns known out- side of a free luncheon forseniors, with some mem-bers of provincial parlia-ment in Ajax on Thursday, June 22.The luncheon was heldby Ajax MPP Patrice Barnes and ScarboroughNorth MPP Raymond Cho,minister of seniors and ac-cessibility. SSAO says alternativesto institutions would notonly address elders' strong preferences to age in theirown homes and communi-ties, but it would also helpalleviate pressure on hospi- tals and waiting lists for in-stitutional placement."It is also a waste of tax-payers' dollars because it is the highest cost, most re-strictive and outdated op-tion when so many others are available that would af-ford elders more dignity,"Spindel said.Alternatives include a paid family caregiver pro-gram, direct funding tomaintain supports in the home and funding the per-son, not the institution, aresome options."I heard her concerns and I think as a govern-ment we are also talkingabout that plan," Barnessaid of her chat with Spin- del.She said investments inlong-term care are part of the solution; however, it re-mains the province's goal tobuild an integrated systemthrough Ontario Health Teams, a connected health-care system centredaround patients, families and caregivers."Ultimately, our goal isto allow people to stay intheir homes as long as pos- sible and that's why we arealso investing billions intoimproving home care,"Barnes said. "The new long-term-care homes al-low us to add additional di-agnostic services into com- munities and closer tohome. "She said the aim is tohave greater co-operation between home care andlong-term care. "Ultimately, we are do- ing exactly what our se-niors have been asking for, giving them the tools they need to stay at home, and ifthey need care in a long-term-care home, it's there ifthey need it." Barnes said the prov-ince created the FixingLong-Term Care Act, 2021, which focuses on improv-ing staffing and care, driv-ing better accountability, enforcement and transpar- ency, and building modern, safe, comfortable long-term-care homes across the province. The province is invest-ing $4.9 billion over fouryears to help homes hire and retain thousands ofstaff across the provinceand boost average daily di-rect care. In 2022 to 2023, the gov-ernment also invested $46million to help homes hire and train infection preven-tion and control staff. In 2022-23, the Ministryof Long-Term Care invest- ed more than $120 million tosupport residents with spe- cialized needs, such as de- mentia and bariatric care. But Spindel said the fo-cus still seems to be on mass institutions. She not-ed ultimately, the provincehas only invested $1 billionin home care while invest- ing $6 billion in institutions—most operated for-profit."I think for the most part, I think most peopledon't understand they'reputting six times morefunding into institutions as they are into home care,"Spindel said.SSAO feels investingpublic funding in institu-tions locks these govern-ments into an archaic, seg-regationist, and exclusion- ary policy for decades tocome and sentences futuregenerations to the samemass institutionalization currently facing olderadults."The pandemic showed us that congregating eldersand people with disabili-ties, who have fragilehealth, in one place exposes them to unnecessaryrisks," an SSAO letter said.
