Aperson left the scene but re- turned some time later andopened fire, police said.Five people were taken to hospital immediately af-ter the shooting and twomore victims were identi- fied after the incident. In November, investiga-tors released security cam- era images of a person ofinterest in the shootings. On Jan. 13, police an-nounced the arrest of 28- yeard-old Bilal Khan, ofScarborough. He facescharges including pointing a firearm and careless useof a firearm in addition toother firearms offences. SUSPECT IN AJAX SHOOTING THAT INJURED SEVEN IS ARRESTED JEFF MITCHELL jmitchell@ durhamregion.com NEWS Durham police said they were called to gunshots at a plaza outside 154 Harwood Ave. just after 1 a.m. on Mon. August 1. Colin Williamson photo maintained our base over this warm spell."At Brimacombe in Oro-no, staff have made similar upgrades with new snow-making technologies al-lowing them to make snowin temperatures ranging from -3 to -12 degrees C,whereas previous technol-ogies required temps from -10 to -25 degrees C. It also takes snow-mak-ing staff about 15 minutes toget the new system up and running, compared to aboutthree hours previously."Before we would neverconsider snow-making for a three- or four-hour win-dow. Now we can take ad-vantage of all snow-mak- ing windows possible tobattle those periods of in-creased temperatures," ex-plained Mark Rutherford, general manager at Brima-combe."Years like this are not uncommon, we typicallyalways have a Januarythaw; it's a phenomenonI've noticed trending for many years," he continued."They are getting strongerand longer in duration, and I think that's one of theclear signs of climatechange impacting all of usand impacting our indus- try."While both resorts hadpartial closures or reduced hours during the melt, theyare looking forward toopening more terrain as colder temps and snowfallsare expected to resume lat-er this week."We're a very adaptive industry and committed tobeing sustainable," saidRutherford. "We're back open and building on get-ting more runs and terrainopen as we speak." He suggested visitorscheck the website at brima-combe.ca before headingout to get the most up-to- date information on cur-rent conditions and openterrain, or to book lift tick- ets, private lessons or otherprograms. At Lakeridge they are also looking forward tomore favourable weather."Right after Christmaswe had some great days; there were a lot of peoplehere and business was ex-tremely good, so you take the good with the bad," hesaid of the last few mildweeks. "We will get through this and will bemaking snow again on theweekend."For more information on open terrain and cur-rent conditions, visit ski-lakeridge.com. Jason Liebregts/Metroland The City of Pickering's CanineActivity Area is now open to the public, and fast becoming a pop-ular destination for dogs andtheir owners. Located in the new leash-freearea of Dunmoore Park onWhites Road South, it's the first of its kind in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). Comprised of 10 ac-tivity stations, owners and theirdogs are guided through fun exer-cises to build both skills and en- durance."We are proud to be the firstmunicipality within the GTA to offer this one-of-a-kind activityarea to our residents and visi-tors," said Lindsey Narraway, su- pervisor of Pickering Animal Services. "We thank Pet Valu forthe $25,000 sponsorship, whichhas allowed us to provide a safeenvironment for dogs to run around freely, get exercise andsocialize." The stations were created by canine experts, and designed fordogs of all sizes, ages and trainingexperience. Each station has a sign with step-by-step instructions and aQR code that can be scanned towatch demonstration videos, making it easy to follow alongand learn new tricks. The stations aim to enrich andstimulate dogs by providing both fun and challenging activities toconquer, and to provide a safespace for owners and their dogs to bond and learn together."Each day Pet Valu supportsmemorable moments for pets and pet lovers across Canada," says Tanbir Grover, Pet Valu's chief dig-ital and marketing officer. "We'redelighted to sponsor this innova- tive new Canine Activity Area andwe look forward to the many spe-cial moments it will create for petsand their families in Pickering." Pickering created these sta-tions with sustainability in mind;many of the materials were repur- posed, including the tires in the"Tire Yourself Out" station, whichwere donated by a local farmer. When choosing paint, the finish is just as important as the colour. Here are some things to consider when choosing a matte, satin, velvet or semi-gloss finish. What are paint finishes? The term finish indicates how the paint will look on the painted surface and how much light it’ll reflect. Finish designa- tions like velvet, platinum, satin and pearl vary from one paint manufacturer to another. It’s therefore essential to ask about the sheen of the prod- uct before making your choice. Here are the most suitable finishes for the different rooms and surfaces in your home: • Ceilings. Matte finish is most suitable for ceilings. If applied evenly, it can hide imperfections. • Living room and bed- rooms. Consider matte and satin finishes for consistent and elegant results. Keep in mind that matte finishes aren’t as easy to clean. For easy cleaning, pearl and semi-gloss finishes are more suitable options. • Bathrooms and kitchens. Shiny and glossy finishes are best for high-maintenance rooms that require moisture resistance. For areas that need occasional polishing, choose a semi-gloss finish. • Woodwork. Velvet, satin, semi-gloss and gloss finishes are suitable for woodwork and mouldings. The same goes for doors. However, it’s best to choose a finish that’s easy to clean. Visit a paint retailer in your area to stock up for your next project. Council also approvedWard 3 regional councillorDavid Pickles' request thatadditional funds of up to $50,000 be approved to ex-pand the scope of the studyto include northeast Pick- ering lands, where the de-velopment project Verai-ne is proposed to be locat-ed. As a result of the study, council may have to recon-sider certain budget deci-sions. "What can we do in 2023to mitigate those financialstrains?" said the city's manager of taxation and fi-nance Stan Karwowski. The study should alsoidentify any funding gaps related to new Cherrywooddevelopment, which will benefit to the city whenconsidering future devel-opment applications. The last time the cityundertook an FIS was in2013 for Seaton.Karwowski explained the Seaton FIS was able toidentify a shortfall, sonow, the city receives a top-up of $1,100 every time a residential building permitis issued for the city to helpmake up the fiscal gap. "It will form the frame-work of future discussionswith any group and if wedon't have that informa- tion, it's like heresy," Kar-wowski said.
