Born in Canada, Grignon was raised by parents who immigrat-ed from Guyana to Canada in the early 1970s and did their best toassimilate her. "You get to a pointwhere you think you made it," she says. "For someone to tell me Istill haven't made it, it was verytraumatic."At the time, the City of Picker-ing was in the midst of creating its Anti-Black Racism TaskForce. The website says the re-gion recognizes the pres-ence of anti-Black racism, and strives to build safe and healthy communities."We condemn all formsof systems of oppression, which deny individualsthe right to equitable treat-ment, access and fair-ness," the website says. The region believes it'spossible to engage thecommunity in anti-racismconversations through open, respectful and factu-al dialogue. From seeing problems in schools to acts of racismin hospitals, Heath, whoeventually became thechair of the Pickering task force, eagerly signed up tobe a part of it. "That wasmy primary reason to help, was to be a voice forthose who felt they weren'tbeing heard and hopefully to address our concerns,"he says. It was created for anumber of reasons, fromidentifying barriers and areas of opportunity, tocelebrating and promotingthe Black community andBlack culture. "We want to empowermembers of the communi-ty," Grignon says. "Wewant them to know that they do have some power, they do have some say inthe way that community services are offered. Theycan get out there, and theycan share their vision andthey can participate." The work so far has in-cluded creating a website,an open-mic night for youth, and the PowerfullyInformed series, whichraised awareness amongBlack community mem- bers around the Octobermunicipal election. "We try to come up with initiatives that align withour mandates, and it'saround identifying barri-ers and opportunities to enhance shared experi-ences," Heath says.Hector-Alexanderhopes that as various ini-tiatives, events and con-versations continuearound racism, that posi- tive change will seep intothe community. "That isour goal," she says. One of the region's ini- tiatives includes hostinganti-Black racism townhall meetings. The region is also building a regionalspeakers bureau. "We'rehoping that this will be anannual event as well," Hec- tor-Alexander says. The task force islooking at ways to support anti-racism education inthe school system, whichincludes building partner- ships with differentboards, and is working on the development of an an-ti-racism hub for commu-nity engagement and edu-cation. "It will be Durham-fo-cused, a living document,"Hector-Alexander says. The Town of Ajax wasquick to create a taskforce."The task force has been set up to listen to lo-cal Black voices, and initi-ate concrete actions to support the Black commu-nity and other racializedgroups in Ajax," the web-site says. It has a commitment toaddressing systemic andinstitutional racism expe-rienced by the Black com-munity and other racial-ized groups. One example was en- dorsing support of thebody-worn camera pro-gram's implementation inDurham Regional Police Service. In 2022, the task forceheld a diversity speaker se- ries, with topics such asdemystifying mentalhealth and understandingracism. Clarington council hasendorsed an inclusivespaces policy in partner- ship with its diversity ad-visory committee in thespring, to create an openenvironment where every- one is welcome to freelyenjoy Clarington facilitiesand spaces without fear of harassment, racism anddiscrimination. After adopting the poli-cy and joining the UNES- CO Coalition of InclusiveMunicipalities, Claring-ton began working on ananti-racism strategy thatwill include education, training and communica-tions to increase aware- ness and eliminate allforms of discrimination."The work of the com-mittee is extremely impor- tant in pushing forward in our fight to eliminate rac- ism and discrimination,"says Meera McDonald, chair of Clarington's diver- sity advisory committeeand co-chair of the anti-Black racism subcommit-tee. "As a community, we must all work together todismantle racism by find-ing some way to act, right now, right where we are.We can all make a differ-ence."Currently, the subcom- mittee is working with themunicipality to add an an-ti-racism web page to Cla-rington.net, with links forresidents to submit andaddress racism and dis-crimination concerns. In partnership with the Cla-rington Public Library, the webpage will also in-clude education and re- sources for parents andcaregivers. "Our volunteer commit- tee and subcommitteemembers have made, andcontinue to make, such animportant contribution to- ward addressing racismand discrimination in ourcommunity," says Erica Mittag, Clarington's inclu-sion, diversity, equity andanti-racism officer.Clarington is currently recruiting to fill four va-cancies on the diversityadvisory committee for a four-year term beginningin 2023. Applications aredue Friday, Dec. 2, andmembers will be appoint- ed in January.Apply at clarington.net. "People felt good whenthey were around Alex."One assumed his out- ward positivity was how hefelt inside."That sadly was not the case," Ashe said.Since his death, the fam- ily has come together, talk-ing openly about his deathin an attempt to raiseawareness about mental illness.Ashe said creating so-cial gathering places andaffordable housing, invest- ing in arts, culture and rec-reation, and securing ahospital in Pickering, are some ways to address men-tal health as Pickering de-velops."Admittedly, this is a very long list and it mayseem like a daunting task,"he said. "But you will be very encouraged to knowthat we have already madesignificant progress inmost of these areas. We just have to continue to moveforward and ensure that wework collaboratively to overcome obstacles thatcome our way."The new council held its first official meeting onMonday, Nov. 21. "Pickering, in my opin-ion, is already Durham'spremier municipality,"Ashe said. "But over the long run, we'll have the po-tential to become one ofOntario's elite cities."He noted Ontario's goal is to build 1.5 million homesin the next five years."While increasing the supply will help the issue ofaffordability, we must en-sure that there's a broadand diverse mix of housing options for homebuyerslooking to own their firsthouse, seniors who are looking to downsize or agein place, and for familieslooking to establish rootshere in Pickering," he said. He often hears the term"sprawl," which makes himthink of car-dependent, soulless, bedroom commu-nities."That is definitely not what we envision for Pick- ering," he said.He said jobs and eco-nomic development must come to Pickering to com-bat sprawl. He wants resi-dents to live and work here, to eliminate gridlock and to spend more time withfriends and families, notdriving in their cars. He wants to continue tokeep taxes low, see the cre-ation of a performing arts centre, the development ofthe city centre and im- proved accessibility."As mayor, my personalgoal is to ensure that wemaximize all of our oppor- tunities to grow Pickeringin a positive and progres-sive manner, and work to-ward becoming a more vi- brant, engaged, connectedand sustainable city," hesaid. He said he has no reser-vations about speaking hismind, even if it might rufflea few feathers. Still, he wants openness, honesty, transparency and accessi-bility to become the hall- mark of his mayoralty. He noted the new coun-cil — four returning mem-bers and three new coun- cillors — is made up of peo-ple with different back-grounds and diverse lived experiences, and is confi-dent it will be a cohesiveand productive group. MARKETPLACE ANNOUNCEMENTS OBITUARIES EMPLOYMENT EMPLOYMENT MARKETPLACE In my heart your memory lingers, always tender, fond and true; there’s not a day, dear friend, I do not think of you. And have you gone, forever gone and left us here to weep. Till we are called to follow you, and in the grave to sleep;yet since you could no longer stay to cheer us with your love, we hope to meet with you again in the bright world above. A sweet little flower, nipped in the bud, no grief or sorrow knew; just came to earth to win our love and then to Heaven withdrew. No stain was on your little heart, sin had not entered there; and innocence slept sweetly on that pale white brow so fair. You were too pure for this cold earth, too beautiful to stay, and so God’s holy angel bore our darling one away. Do not stand at my grave and weep, I am not there, I do not sleep.
