She and her partner buymeat from a butcher andbulk buy and freeze food items that are on sale, andtry to limit added snack items if they can. "I tend to buy no-namebrands or multi-items tosave what we can cost- wise," she said.Except for necessitiessuch as diapers and milk, if deVries can't price matchan item, she sees if there isan alternative she can buy."Price matching has be- come my part-time job,"she said.Johnson stocks up on di-apers when they're on sale, and tries to only purchaseon-sale items, but costs popup constantly with her kids and they add up."We almost never orderfood and we never go out toeat," she said. DeVries had to cut thecable bill, in an attempt tosave money each month. "We used to get takeoutoften enough, where nowwe need to really think if it can fit into the budget," shesaid. Prime Minister JustinTrudeau recently ad-dressed the issue at an Oct.12 media event at Memon Supermarket in Pickering, stating, "the rising cost ofliving has been hitting hard."Measures currently upfor debate in the House ofCommons include dou- bling the GST credit for sixmonths, delivering an ad-ditional $457 to a familywith two kids this fall. As well, 1.8 million low-income renters will benefitfrom a $500 one-time top up to the Canada HousingBenefit. Also, he said familieswith kids under 12 who don't have dental coveragecould get up to $1,300 perchild over the next two years.Johnson, who reducedher planned maternity leave of 18 months to 12 tohelp pay the bills, says she and her partner can't af-ford to live near Toronto, but they both work down-town. "Since ending mat leaveearly, my gas cost to workand back has tripled and I don't have the option towork from home," she said.DeVries and her hus-band have had to park their second vehicle temporari-ly.And Rubel says the highcost of gas doesn't only im- pact those who have to fillup their tank."Everyone is being im- pacted," he said.It costs more to transportitems, for example, causingthe prices of necessities such as groceries to go up.Price increases even af-fected Johnson and her family when they had tofind a rental. The cost of a space forher family had increased so significantly that theiroptions were very limited. "We were also being put into bidding wars for arental place instead of ac-cepting the cost at face val-ue," she said. Those with a full-timejob find it's not enough tolive on."They're also looking fora side hustle," Rubel said.Wages are going up butthey're not matching with the inflation rate."Both members have towork," he said. "If (one)stays at home, they'll need a part-time job."Johnson's partner tookon a side job to make up more income, but due toCOVID, the work is few andfar between and usuallydoesn't pay enough to justi- fy time away from home.Rubel expects the rate ofinflation will go back to its target rate of two per centin 2024, but there's a priceto pay first. "In order to come out of inflation, we have to en-dure some type of reces-sion," he said. "It comeswith a price tag. You can- not achieve both at thesame time."Economists say the re- cession could happen inthe first or second quarterof next year, Rubel said.He suggests families save money where they canbefore the recession. SOME TIPS FROM LOCALMOMS • Browse all the flyers, price match whenever andwherever you can, and if possible shop at stores thatgive points back, says deV-ries. "You might as well get something back if you'regoing to be spending themoney anyways," she said. • Find gently used itemson either Marketplace orFacebook groups, Johnsonsays. "It's been the biggestsupport not just for myself, but to also help other fami- lies out," Johnson said. Collier and other criticsfear Ajax residents couldbe affected by the develop-ment of this area as it is downstream from andcould see flooding as a re-sult. He and fellow Ajaxcouncillors voted "no" to ascenario that would see theurbanization of more than 9,000 acres of Durhamfarmland at the May 25Durham Regional council meeting."With the headwaters inplay, the residents of Ajax deserve answers to severalimportant questions: whatflood and erosion mitiga-tions will be put in place; how will water quality andquantity be protected; andwho will pay for flood miti-gation solutions?" he said. Collier, who is seekingre-election, recently wrotea letter to David Piccini, minister of environment, conservation and parks, appealing to him to protectthe headwaters through various methods, such asadding them to the Green-belt. The Town of Ajax can-not be the only voice in theconversation, Collier said. "All parties must come together to find solutionsto preserving this sensitiveaquatic ecosystem, and to protecting the residents ofAjax from downstreamflooding," he said. COUNCIL Ajax Mayor Shaun Collier says more action is needed to help protect the Carruthers Creek Headwaters. Thecompany, which has morethan 200 employees, is the maker of agriculture, con-struction, commercial andresidential equipment.Ford said the company coming to Pickeringwouldn't have happenedwithout all three levels of government working to-gether."We're in a world econo-my folks right now and if we aren't competitive herein Ontario, guess what, it'sgoing somewhere else. It's going down south to theU.S. or going somewhereelse," Ford added. He noted his govern-ment has slashed red tape to make it easier for compa-nies to locate in Ontario."I always say governmentdoesn't create jobs. If govern- ment starts creating jobs,we're all in trouble. We cre-ate the environment for companies to come here andthrive and prosper. Guesswhat, when companiesthrive and prosper and grow, all these people here havethe opportunity to thrive, prosper and grow," Ford saidof the employees watchingthe opening ceremony. The facility is on 1155Kubota Dr., just off of High- way 7 west of the hamlet ofBrougham. It's in an areadubbed the InnovationCorridor by the City of Pickering.Yannick Montagano, president of Kubota Cana- da, said, "Today is a veryspecial day for Kubota Can-ada and we are honoured tohave all of you hear today to help celebrate this im-portant milestone."Kubota Canada's story is one of growth and ofmeeting the needs of Cana-dians," Montagano said. The company first came to Canada in 1975 and hadfive employees. At the time,it was called Kubota Trac- tor Limited. It had threetractor options and onlyfour dealers. There are now 137 deal-ers across the country and sales exceed $5 billion thisyear, Montagano noted. The new facility cost $80million and includes 500,000 square feet to ware-house space and 60,000square feet of office, meet- ing and training space."We have more thanenough space for addition-al growth," Montagano said. "We have 25 addition-al acres on this property toexpand this facility.""As Canada seeks to feed the world, Kubota isthere to provide the prod-ucts to help the farmers and our agricultural cus-tomers carry out that mis-sion," he said.Montagano also thanks "all levels of government"for helping the companyachieve its goals. "The Innovation Corri-dor was initially made pos-sible by the Government ofOntario sale of the Seaton lands to the City of Picker-ing. Under the leadershipof mayor Dave Ryan, the city had the foresight andstrategic vision to createan Innovation Corridor, of-fering companies like ours prestige employmentland," Montagano noted.Ken Kitao, president of Kubota Corporation, camefrom Japan for the event."It's a great honour for me to celebrate Kubota Canada's grand opening,"he said.Having the new ware- house will allow the com-pany to be more efficientand make it easier to sup-ply dealers and "to bring joy to them," Kitao noted.Peter Bethlenfalvy, themember of the provincial parliament for Pickering-Uxbridge and the provin-cial minister of finance, said Canada and Japan have an excellent tradingrelationship."As the premier said, we can't move forward. We'renot an island here, compet-ing against ourselves. We're competing against everybody else. So, we'revery grateful for that in-vestment in this countryand this province," Beth- lenfalvy noted."Bigger paycheques, bet-ter infrastructure. That's what people want," he said."Just across the road, we'rebuilding houses, thousandsof new homes." That allows people towork in the communitywhere they live in, Bethlen- falvy added.Mayor Dave Ryan said,"Boy, is it exciting to be uphere." "These things are donewith teamwork. They don'thappen by an individual," Ryan said, pointing to hiscouncil colleagues andstaff with the city.Founded in 1975, Kubota Canada Ltd. is a whollyowned subsidiary of Kubo-ta Corporation, a tractorand heavy equipment man-ufacturer based in Osaka,Japan. After years of carefulplanning, Pickering's newskate spot is up and running and is proving to be the busyplace that skateboardersthought it would be."It's been quite well used by locals and people using itfrom outside of town," saidskateboarder Scott Loyst, who has been an integralpart of the planning processfor Pickering's skate spot. The skate spot officially opened in September at theWest Shore CommunityCentre at 1015 Bayly St.The location was sup- ported by the PickeringWest Shore Community As- sociation, as well as 91 percent of the respondents toan online survey. The skate spot is on themain thoroughfare, whichallows for passive obser- vance, Loyst said. A large banked wall actsas a barrier from passing ve-hicles. "I like hitting the holething," Loyst said. "It's real-ly fun."But his favourite feature—one he really fought for —is the shotgun pole jam."It's a small, cheap fea- ture, but it's a lot of fun onceyou learn how to play withit," he said.Loyst is excited for more skate spots in the future."The popularity of this one has really opened thecity's eyes," Loyst said. The skateboard strate- gy the City of Pickering em-barked on in 2017 identifiedthe need for five skate spotsin south Pickering. Pickering has one com-munity-sized skateboardpark — located in the Diana, Princess of Wales Park —and this is the first skatespot."Additional skateboard- ing facilities will also be re-quired as Central Pickering (Seaton) develops," said Ar-nold Mostert, Pickering's se-nior co-ordinator of land- scape and parks develop-ment.A second skate spot hasbeen included in the city's parks capital forecast for2024, Mostert said. Its designand location will be deter- mined through further pub-lic consultation. The skateboard parkstrategy also indicated the need to replace the existingskateboard park at Diana, Princess of Wales Park."Skateboard park designstandards have improved and evolved since this facil-ity was constructed over 25years ago, and the facility isnow showing its age," Mos- tert said. Staff are investigatingother sites within the city's downtown core where a newpark could be constructed, and council has approvedfunds for this work to pro- ceed once a suitable site hasbeen determined. POWER OF THE PURSE Pickering has a new spot for upscale desserts, from Belgian chocolate fondueto fresh crepes.Dessert Lounge, which recently opened at 2200 Brock Rd., is the creation of Morsal Rahmat, a young entrepreneurwho has long dreamed of opening her own business. "With desserts, you can be creative, you can put your own spin on things," she said. The Dessert Lounge space is outfittedwith touches of pink, gold and marble in- cluding pink velvet sofas and booths —the website describes the vibe as "the in-tersection of sophistication and fun." A menu of Instagrammable desserts includes crepes and vanilla cake waf-fles made fresh daily that can be toppedwith an array of toppings — from choco-latey to fruity and everything in be-tween.You can also find cake, sundaes, milkshakes and hot and frozen drinks. Rahmat's menu favourites include the af-fogato — vanilla ice cream topped with ashot of espresso and dark chocolate curls—and the cream rolls, which "don't have a lot of razzle dazzle, but are to die for,"she said. The menu is designed to have some- thing for everyone, from a quick scoop ofice-cream to fine dining with "Fondue PerVous," a platter of banana, strawberries, marshmallows and brownies with a choice of Belgian milk, dark or whitechocolate for dipping.Rahmat's family is from Afghanistan and she weaves some of that culture in-to the menu, including Malo's Pink Tea—an authentic Afghan milk tea madewith green tea leaves, cardamon, and served with a dollop of clotted cream —and Shiryakh, which is Afghan icecream, topped with pistachio and car- damom. The saffron green tea in particular isclose to her heart. The saffron is sourcedfrom Afghanistan, where it is hand- picked by female farmers; every cup soldhelps support the women and their fami-lies. "It means a lot to me to be able to sup-port other women this way," Rahmat says.We want to hear about your favouriteplaces to eat in Durham!
