The Learning Resource Selection Poli-cy and Procedure also outlines what hap- pens when parents or members of the com-munity challenge a book or resource. The appropriateness of books used in schools was front and centre earlier thisyear, after the DDSB pulled three titles byIndigenous authors from school librariesin response to complaints from Indigenous families. The three titles — 'The Great Bear' byDavid A. Robertson, 'Louis Riel: Le PaysImprobable' by Andre Leblanc and 'Sistersof the Wolf' by Patricia Miller-Shroeder —were returned to DDSB library shelves af-ter a review. The updated policy lists criteria thatshould be used for choosing learning mate-rials, including "portraying accurate his-tories and narratives of various communi- ties and groups that are discriminatedagainst, marginalized and minoritized." All resource selections must complywith the DDSB's Indigenous Education Policy and Human Rights Policy. The procedure notes "at least annually, staff shall engage in resource reviews as to compliance with the Learning ResourceSelection Policy, to better support ongoinglearning and to challenge discriminatorybiases, attitudes, assumptions, stereo- types, content and barriers in learning re-sources."If a resource is challenged, there are two possible pathways. One is an informal reconsideration thatis resolved at the school level with the prin-cipal making a decision. The other is a formal process that seesthe board strike a Learning Resource Re-consideration Committee that includesDDSB superintendents, senior staff and a trustee. The committee is required to pro-vide a written report on its decision within30 school days of first meeting. A new DDSB guideline for choosing re-sources and books advises staff to considerfactors like representation — "are partic-ular identities only represented in one way, or barely at all?" and cultural re-presentation. This new nation-al day of remembrance, now in only its second year,is an opportunity for allCanadians to learn aboutthe treatment of Indige- nous Peoples in the resi-dential school system andother colonial institutions —and the lasting harm that was done. It is also an opportunityto reflect on how we can allplay a part in healing these harms. Canada's first NationalDay for Truth and Recon-ciliation came not long af- ter the Tk'emlúps te Secwé-pemc announced that alarge gravesite had been lo-cated on the grounds of theformer Kamloops residen-tial school. This announce-ment, and findings across the country, has led SettlerCanada to engage with thehistory of residentialschools in a different way, allowing a new conversa-tion to take place. For too long, the honest truth of this shameful part of Canada's history was hidden and denied. Thechildren were pressurednot to tell their stories. Re- ports of abuse, neglect andsuffering were ignored. Infact, significant efforts toacknowledge this history, such as Canada's officialapology and the Truth andReconciliation Commis-sion, only happened be-cause of years of persistentefforts by Survivors. Even now, there are some who still deny thefundamental truth of theresidential school system—that its explicit purpose was to destroy First Na-tions, Métis and Inuit cul-tures, communities and languages. Truth is the fundamen- tal basis of reconciliation.Without acknowledge-ment of the truth, it is im- possible for Survivors toheal and for communitiesto rebuild. The National Centre for Truth and Reconciliationbelieves that all Canadians—and especially all stu- dents — need to under-stand the truth of ourshared history. That's whywe have worked with Sur- vivors, Elders, KnowledgeKeepers, and communitypartners to create a full week of free programming. During Truth and Rec-onciliation Week, fromSept. 26 to 30, we will bring the voices of Survivors di-rectly to classrooms fromcoast to coast to coast andintroduce young people to Indigenous culture, lan-guage and history. Age-appropriate mate- rial for students in grades 1through 12 will be freelyavailable to watch atschool or online. The con- tent will be available forpublic access startingSept. 29. On Sept. 30, Canadians can honour the Survivors and the children who nev-er came home by wearingorange, as a symbol of their commitment to change.People can attend events incommunities across thecountry and watch a live commemorative broadcasttaking place from uncededAnishinabek Algonquin territory in Ottawa. But reconciliation re-quires more than one day ayear or one week a year. Reconciliation is the workof generations. What wecan accomplish in the days ahead is to listen to Survi-vors, honour their truths, and learn how we can allcontribute to reconcilia- tion in our daily lives. Stephanie Scott is exec-utive director of the Na- tional Centre for Truthand Reconciliation. Truthand Reconciliation Week programming is availablefor everyone through theNCTR YouTube channeland website (nctr.ca). "Carrying on the sto-ries and keeping them alive and as a bit of a beacon tohow to avoid the mistakesof the past, but also that we just simply need to treat allchildren with dignity."Raising awareness andpublic education is also an important piece of Truthand Reconciliation Day,added Chief LaRocca. "It's also a holidayaround where we take timeto think about reconcilia-tion and how we organize our personal lives and ourprofessional lives in a waythat honours reconcilia-tion. That's what I hope for individuals and workplac-es, that they would takethat day to learn to get some perspective, to thinkabout what reconciliationmeans and how they cancontribute to that ideal in tangible actions and activ-ities," she said. "I'd like to see people taking time to educatethemselves, immersethemselves in the variousevents that go on in and around their communitiesand their homes (and) takepart in public education events."From there, continuedthe chief, perhaps peoplecan take some action on their own."Just working to try andunderstand what it might mean to be an ally to an In-digenous community, howmight that be put into prac-tice," she said. "And that's a question that for some peo-ple — it might come fairlyquickly or easily; for oth-ers, it might take a while. And all I can ask is thatpeople put their minds andhearts to that question and try and implement it overtime."And while the MSIFNembraces the idea of the holiday and what it doesmean, Chief LaRocca ques- tions why the federal gov- ernment dragged its feetbefore the discovery ofchildren's graves expedited the declaration of Sept. 30as a national day of obser-vance."I'm glad they did it, (but) I do believe it tookthem far too long to do it,"said the chief. When the Truth andReconciliation Commis-sion of Canada issued its fi-nal report in Dec. 2015, "it documented very clearlythe process and the hor-rors behind Canada's resi- dential schools," said ChiefLaRocca."However, it wasn't untilwe actually physically came upon the children'sgraves at some of Canada'sresidential schools withinthe last couple of years ... that the government actu-ally decided to take actionand mark that day as a na- tional holiday," she said. "Itwas really unfortunatethat they had waited untilthat occurred or that those discoveries were made andit just showed to me that, in some level, that report just wasn't fully real or hadn'tpercolated for the govern-ment until they found ob- jective evidence that hadtaken place. "And in that way, thosechildren that they found are truth-tellers. They arethe tellers of Canada's his-tory with Indigenous peo- ples and so we owe them adebt of gratitude. And tome, that's what the day isabout as well." The Mississaugas ofScugog Island First Nationwill host a private, sunriseceremony Sept. 30 to markTruth and ReconciliationDay.The evening prior, on Sept. 29, LaRocca willheadline a public discus-sion that aims to shed morelight on the historical, le- gal and political issues im-pacting the Indigenouspeoples of Canada. It will run from 6:30 to 9 p.m. atthe Scugog CommunityRecreation Centre, 1655Reach St., and will feature a special musical perfor-mance by Gary LaRocca. Katherine Ross, Waste Management Technician for the Region of Durham talks everything Waste. Send your waste related questions or comments to waste@durham.ca If you require this information in an accessible format, please call 1-800-667-5671 •durham.ca/waste Introducing Circular Economy Month For 20 years, Waste Reduction Week in Canada has focused on the concepts of waste reduction and recycling as a key component of our transition to a circular economy. However, educating Canadians on this new model of consumption involves more than just one week. That’s why the Circular Innovation Council is extending Waste Reduction Week in Canada into the Circular Economy Month for all of October. The future of waste management in Durham Region includes a circular economy. This means we need to rethink the traditional 3Rs (reduce, reuse, recycle) and consider the value of materials and products we purchase before they become waste. In a perfect circular economy, nothing is waste. The circular economy retains and recovers as much value as possible from resources by reusing, repairing, refurbishing, remanufacturing, or repurposing, products, and materials before they are recycled or thrown out. The objective is about using our limited and valuable resources wisely: thinking about what will happen to a product before we buy it; waste as a resource instead of a cost; and finding innovative ways to improve the environment and the economy. As individuals, we can use circular economy principles to cut our waste and save money. Five things you can do to support the circular economy: Avoid single-use items when you can.Say ‘no’ to disposable cutlery and single-serve condiment packages when ordering take-out or delivery. Drink tap water instead of bottled water. Fill a reusable water bottle at home to take with you while you’re on the go. Avoid items that come in single serving packages such as juice pouches, yogurt, or coffee pods. Substitute your dryer sheets with wool dryer balls. Use what you have, borrow what you don’t.Make your own cleaning products using common household ingredients. This eliminates excessive packaging, is less harmful to the environment and can save you money. Repair items, when possible, instead of throwing them away. Rent or borrow items you rarely use. Make available to others what you no longer need.Participate in the second-hand economy by buying and selling used items. Donate reusable items to charity. Sell and shop second-hand clothes stores. Shop smarter, waste less.Think about your purchases. Do you need it? Can you buy it with less packaging? Consider buying local, second-hand or items made from recycled and recyclable materials. Reduce food waste.Practice proper meal planning to buy only what you need. Eat what you buy and get creative with leftovers. Compost what’s left or put it in your green bin. Every action counts. Visit durham.ca/waste for more information and tips on how you can play a role in the circular economy. 13 | Ne w s A d v e r t i s e r | Th u r s d a y , S e p t e m b e r 2 9 , 2 0 2 2 dur h a m r e g i o n . c o m If you require this information in an accessible format, please contact 1-800-667-5671. On October 1 and 2 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.,people from all across Durham Region and the Greater Toronto Area will be invited to visit several locations, free of charge, and participate in a number of fun activities for the whole family. In partnership with Durham Farm Fresh, Durham Tourism is once again welcoming folks who want a glimpse into rural life after a two-year hiatus due to the pandemic. The last Gates Open event took place in 2019. This event is the perfect way to kick-start your celebrations for Ontario Agriculture Week (October 3 to 9). Fun activities You’ll get to do more than just walk around these farms; you’ll be encouraged to roll up your sleeves and partake in some fun and educational activities. Some of the activities you can expect this year include digging for potatoes, pressing apples, working with wool and painting pumpkins. Which activity you participate in will depend on the farms you visit, so plan out your route accordingly. TheGatesOpeneventisself-guided,sovisitors can plan their weekend out how they want, with no registration or tickets required. As a family friendly event, Gates Open encourages people of all ages, from near and far, to come out and experience life on a real working farm. Participating farms As of the publication of this article, the following Durham Region farms are participating in the 2022 Gates Open weekend: •Banjo Cider (Uxbridge) •Bragg Farms (Bowmanville) •Gallery on the Farm (Hampton) •Nature’s Bounty Farm (Port Perry) •OcalaWinery (Port Perry) •Sargent Family Dairy (Enniskillen) •Tindall Farm & Market (Uxbridge) •Two Blokes Cider (Seagrave) •VillaVida Loca Market (Sunderland) •Wool 4 Ewe Fibre Mill (Nestleton Station) As you can see, there’s a good variety represented, with cideries, wineries, dairy farms, wool producers and more! The flavours of Durham One thing the Gates Open event highlights is the importance of locally produced food.We take for granted that fresh vegetables are available to us at the grocery store, and we forget that some of that bounty is produced in our own backyard. Many of our Gates Open farms will be offering samplesoftheirgoodstovisitors, includingsome prepared by professional chefs. You might not realize that these goods are produced right in your own area! If you want more than just a sample, many of these farms will have items for sale, as well. It’s a great opportunity to stock up for fall harvest season celebrations. Nothing beats having locally grown vegetables and homemade baked goods on your dinner table when hosting close family and loved ones. Plan ahead Want to take part in this year’s Gates Open event? Visit GatesOpen.ca to get the details on participating farms and to plan your route. This is a rain or shine event,so be prepared for weather conditions. WehopetoseeyouandyourfamilyonOctober 1 and 2. There’s so much to see and do right in your own backyard. It’s a great opportunity to experience another way of life. Our local farms and farmers play such a vital role in our communities; it’s important to learn more about them. See you there! His mother, a cricket fan, would have said that at age 94, he'd had a good innings. He was born in Brighton and as a boy, played cricket, football, and tennis. He took up boxing as a teen, and at 6'4" with a long reach, he was a natural. He was an accomplished pianist. He trained at Brighton Technical College as a mechanical engineer and a draftsman. Ken loved to go dancing with his friends, and that's where he met the charming Rita, whom he married in 1951. They were enticed to emigrate to Canada so that Ken could help establish Precision Valve (Canada) Ltd. in 1966, where he worked for almost three decades. The couple settled in Ajax with their young daughter, Linda. Ken and Rita loved to travel and enjoyed an active lifestyle until Rita's passing in 1997. In 2009, Ken moved to Mississauga to marry the lovely Barbara, who passed away five short weeks ago. Ken loved being a grandfather and doted on his only grandson, Kent, with whom he shared his love of the Toronto Blue Jays. Ken will be remembered as kindly and generous — a true gentleman — with a great sense of humour and always a twinkle in his eye. He will be missed. Linda, Kent and Elizabeth wish to offer their sincere thanks to his care team at Ajax-Pickering Hospital. Visitation will be held at the De Stefano Funeral Home, 1289 Keith Ross Drive, Oshawa on Friday, September 30th from 2:00-3:00 p.m., with tributes to be shared at 3:00 p.m. In memory of Ken, donations may be made to Movember Canada or to the Ajax-Pickering Hospital Foun- dation. Memories may be shared at www.destefano funeralhomes.ca BRADY-BUTLER, Elizabeth Ann ___________ It is with profound sadness that we announce the sudden passing of my beloved wife Beth Brady Butler. Born in Kingston, Ontario, she attended school in Ajax/ Pickering and lived in the Durham Region. Beth was a loving wife to Glenn, a devoted daughter to Jim and Barb Brady (nee Boyce) of Port Perry, loving, proud mother of her four sons Brady, Tanner, Tyler and Logan, dear sister of Kent Brady (Elena), and daughter in law of Anne Butler. She was loved and will be greatly missed by her family, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and friends. Pre- deceased by her infant twin sister Margaret Lynn. Beth graduated from the Scarborough General Hospital, Nursing Program and, in her career, advocated for the care of the elderly. Later in life, her hard work, positive attitude and dedication in her position at Durham Kia, allowed her to become one of the top finance service managers in the country, after being recog- nized as one of the top in the industry. A beautiful person with a generous, loving heart whose greatest joy was spending time with her family and pet Gracie. Beth's infectious energy, humor and warm personality, shined bright with her amazing smile. She showed positivity, kindness, thoughtfulness and generosity in every aspect of her life. She loved shopping, bling and working in her garden. Beth's faith, in God and her church, gave her the strength to forgive others and to find true happiness in her life. Her family is so proud of her for the person she was, for all she achieved in her life and for the joy she received, sharing her success, to help those less fortunate. Family and friends are invited to attend a Service to Celebrate her life at the Embassy Church, 416 Taunton Road West in Oshawa, on Sunday, October 2nd at 2:00 p.m. Private interment will take place at the Cataraqui Cemetery in Kingston, Ontario at a future date. If desired, memorial donations may be made to The Embassy Church in Oshawa.
