A Whitby resident hasbecome the first person with a disability to paddle-board across all five GreatLakes.Mike Shoreman arrivedin Toronto on Aug. 20, com-pleting a Lake Ontariocrossing that started Aug. 19 in New York state and fol-lowed a 54 km route to To-ronto.He crossed the other four Great Lakes earlierthis summer. Shoreman, 39, is a for- mer paddleboard coachwho says he abruptly losthis business, his social life and his independence in 2018 after developing Ram-say Hunt syndrome. The neurological condi-tion resulted in a loss of mo- bility and speech, and Sho-reman was told he wouldnever paddleboard again."That caused me to haveamental health break-down," he says. Treatment and support from several mental healthorganizations helped himfind his way back to paddle-boarding -- he had to re- learn how walk and gettingback on his board was aslow process. Shoreman has since be-come a passionate advocatefor mental health. He and his team launched Cana- da's Great Lakes Crossingto raise funds and aware-ness for youth mentalhealth and "show young Canadians that they have acaring community on theirside."The mission to cross allfive Great Lakes on a pad-dle board was inspired byVicki Keith, who swam across the Great Lakes in1988.Shoreman's campaignaims to raise $250,000 for jack.org to provide mentalhealth programs in highschools, colleges and uni- versities. In an interview beforehis Lake Ontario crossing, Shoreman described the mental and physical toll ofthe journey so far. "Mentally, I'm really ex-hausted," he said. "I knew that physically this was go-ing to be gruelling ... I didn'tthink that I would experi-ence the mental healthjourney that I have. It's avery lonely experience." Shoreman says his goal to raise funds and aware-ness for youth mentalhealth is helping to pushhim through — he person- ally knows the critical im-portance of mental healthservices and wants to make sure they are available forothers. "Everyone always asks, what do you think about when you go into the wa-ter? I think, this is going tobe painful, this is going to be hard and I'm going tohate half of it," he says. "ButI'm also thinking that noth-ing lasts forever, every- thing has a start and anend. And I know this willend." While news coverage from across Canada andthe U.S. has referred to Sho-reman has a being from To- ronto, he does in fact live inWhitby and says he istouched by the level of sup-port he has received from Durham Region. Visit jack.akarai-sin.com/ui/canadasgreat- lakecrossing to make a do-nation to Canada's GreatLakes Crossing. MIKE SHOREMAN COMPLETES GREAT LAKES CROSSINGS JILLIAN FOLLERT jfollert@durhamregion.com In September, the Ac-cess IO Accessibility, Be- longing and Inclusionevent at the Abilities Cen-tre will showcase the bestin technology and innova- tion startups in Durham —and partner those innova-tors with industry experts, potential customers and in-vestors. Tech companies work-ing with technologies and innovations that supportaccessibility, belongingand inclusion will bringtheir big ideas to Access IO. "Wink your right eye,and the car's right turn sig-nal will come on. That way you can keep your handson the hand controls werethey should be ... This prod-uct definitely centres around accessibility. It canbenefit drivers with disa-bilities, such as myself. It can benefit a lot of peoplewho don't think they can beindependent and drive,"said Shanjay Kailayanath- an, who founded Axces-siom Technologies as anengineering student at On- tario Tech University. The assistive tech uses adriver-facing camera andfacial gesture recognitionsoftware to allow drivers to control the turn signals, windshield wipers andmore. Kailayanathan was par-alyzed in a car accident andwas dealing with long com-mutes on public transit to the Oshawa campus. To beable to drive himself toschool, Kailayanathan got a vehicle with hand con- trols — one hand controlsgas and break and the oth-er one controls steering."Driving with hand con- trols is not great ... It makesit hard to control wipersand turn signals," he ex- plainedHe found the possiblesolutions — ranging from abutton control that still takes a hand away fromdriving controls, to an ex-pensive $30,000 touch screen — were lacking. "I thought, there's got to be a better solution. Beingan engineering student, Ithought, there's got to be something I can make,"said Kailayanathan. The company startedheavy development two years ago and is now work-ing to add voice recogni-tion. The product is in the beta-testing stage rightnow, and Kailayanathanhopes it will be ready to goto the market next year. "For my own experi-ence, being able to drivewas a huge burden off ev- eryone around me. I feelmuch more productive. In asense, being able to driveagain was like being able to use my legs again," saidKailayanathan. "Knowinghow that felt for me, I wantothers to feel the same way. That's why I started Axces-siom. And why I think ourproduct is great for this ac- cessibility event." The innovation event in-cludes a table top show andone-minute pitch and of- fers startups an evening offeedback, advice and po-tential investments from "angel investors" who in-vest their own funds inbusiness startups. Theevent is co-hosted by the Abilities Centre andGrandview Kids. It offersan opportunity for the foundation members to hear from innovative start- ups with promising tech-nologies for accessibilityand inclusion. The event is supportedby Invest Durham and hasgarnered the interest of In-ternational companies — including AINI Co. Ltd., astartup technology compa-ny based in China that en- ables deaf people to talk tohealth care providers andget basic health careknowledge from specialists without third-party help."Even though wecouldn't get the visa be-cause of the time it re-quires, we would like to vis-it (Abilities) Centre andmeet like-minded people and investors in the nearfuture in Canada," Vitalii- Nikonorov, AINI COO,said via email. The invitation-only Ac-cess IO event will take placeWednesday, Sept. 14 from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. at the Abil-ities Centre, 55 Gordon St. inWhitby. Visit www.accessio-.ca for more information. This innovative under-taking will see the installa- tion of a new and modern-ized roofing system, as wellas a fundamental change tothe soccer pitch configura- tion to facilitate the instal-lation of a permanent, mul- ti-purpose hard court sur-face that will accommodatefour integrated pickleball courts within an officialcourt for futsal — a type ofsoccer that is played in-doors on a smaller court. At a special meeting onAug. 18, council gavepre-2023 capital budget ap- proval for the constructionof the four pickleball courtsand minor facility enhance-ments for a cost of $820,000. For the major repairs tothe soccer dome, councilapproved the contract tothe Farley Group for a cost of $1,425,000, and the con-tract for the constructionand installation of the soc- cer turf field, in the amountof $575,000, went to Pro TechTurf Solutions. The enhancements are expected to completed byabout March 2023. Corrado Roccasalva, thePickering Football Club(PFC)'s immediate past president, said the club isheartened by the city's con-tinued support. "The city's commitment to 'Build Back Better' willplay a key role in ensuringthat PFC is back bigger and better than ever as we con-tinue to be the 'destinationclub' in the Durham Re-gion," he said. The "Build Back Better"project was developed inpartnership with the PFC,which has leased the Pick- ering Soccer Centre fromthe city since 2014. The cityand PFC executives have been meeting regularlyover the past six monthswith respect to the roof re-placement, as well as brain- storming how to providemore functionality and sports and recreational op-portunities for the commu- nity. The improvements willallow the city to provide court time for pickleballplayers, as the courts willbe made available for publicuse on weekdays for a mini- mum of 42 weeks per year.Pickleball and futsal will join an array of sports andrecreational activities available at the soccer cen-tre, including volleyball, cricket, Zumba, lacrosse, athletics and softball."United in vision andpurpose, we have developeda brilliant plan that will add 6,720 hours of annual courttime to accommodate the explosive popularity andgrowth of the sport of pick- leball," said Mayor DaveRyan. "Combined with thefutsal court, sprint track and other available sports, the Pickering Soccer Cen-tre will be an even more di-verse and dynamic sports and recreation destinationin Durham Region." This study will develop and evaluate a range of alternatives to address risks to public safety and greenspace from the hazards of short-term and long-term shoreline erosion. The purpose of this work is to identify and implement the preferred solution to provide erosion protection to at-risk sites along the Ajax Waterfront. This study is being planned in accordance with Conservation Ontario’s Class Environmental Assessment for Remedial Flood and Erosion Control Projects (amended 2013), the approved process for this type of undertaking. The Class EA will be conducted along 5.7km of shoreline with a focus on maintaining the existing natural buffer while allowing natural non-problematic erosion processes to continue. Relocating infrastructure and shoreline hardening where necessary will also be considered in order to protect beach areas and the Waterfront Trail. TRCA invites you to participate in this study which includes public and stakeholder engagement. Your input will be incorporated in the planning and design process for this study. If you are interested in participating in this study or receiving future project updates, please contact the Project Manager by one of the methods below: Natasha Gibson Toronto and Region Conservation Authority Phone: (365)-566-2342 Email: ajaxshoreline@trca.ca Website: trca.ca/ajax-waterfront TRCA intends to proceed with this project pending the receipt of all necessary funding and approvals.
