THURSDAY SEPTEMBER 1, 2022 Oshawa resident Wayne Eg-gert admits he may not be "run- ning on the treadmill" and mak-ing the government money any-more.But it's hard to see the lively 76-year-old as a liability. However, he thinks the gov-ernment does see his age group "as a liability. They (government)don't want to say that, but youhave to take care of them (olderadults)." Eggert was speaking at theOshawa Seniors Citizens Cen-tre55+ of his concerns about the health care system."These people here," he saidlooking around the dining room... "all of them are going to the hospital regularly. We're all inthis together."The health care system needsimprovement. I know it costs a lot of money. It's 19 per cent in 2021. Canadians are livinglonger and becoming alarger percentage of thepopulation and their needsare growing. In Durham Region, those numbers are lower than the national averagewith the numbers of 65-plus residents growing to15.9 per cent in 2021 from 14.4 per cent in 2016.But it depends whereyou live in the region. In the three northernmunicipalities of Uxbridge(21.4 per cent), Brock (22per cent) and Scugog (24.2 per cent), those 65 and overare a much larger percent-age of the population. In the five southern mu-nicipalities of Durham, thelowest percentage ofover-65s is in Ajax (13.1 per cent), while the highest isOshawa (16.7 per cent).Whitby (14.8 per cent), Cla- rington (15.4 per cent) andPickering (16.6 per cent)round out the rest.David Cravit, chief membership officer forCARP (formerly CanadianAssociation for RetiredPersons), said his organi- zation has a number of pri-orities of importance forolder adults. At the very top of the list, according toCARP's 330,000 members,is health care."It wasn't like we had a beautifully running healthcare system and then CO-VID came along. You had a terrible health care systemthat was stretched and dis-organized, you had hall- way medicine, you had ...unacceptable wait times. We have a very weak health care system to begin with, and those weaknesses wereexposed by COVID," Cravit said.He said CARP wants fivethings done to improvehealth care: a transforma- tion of long-term care, making it patient-centred,not institutional; drastical-ly reduced wait times; more spent on aging athome; making vaccinesmore accessible; and more fitness for older adults. For Eggert, while healthcare improvement is vitalfor a growing older adult population, so is the abilityto socialize and avoid isola-tion. That's where his localseniors centre comes intoplay. "A lot of these peopledon't have anyone to go to.They have no family left. For whatever reason, they're on their own. Plac-es like this (the seniors cen-tre), they know they cancome here, they knowthey'll get guidance. Thestaff is outstanding, they're more like a friend than abusiness. It's interacting,it's a way of life, it's a socialsystem that should be maintained at the highestlevel," said Eggert.Oshawa Senior Citizens Centres55+ executive di-rector Sandra Black hasworked at the centre for thepast eight years. She has seen the growth in olderadult numbers during thattime, though she acknowl- edges that COVID-19 hashad a big impact on thosewho attend the five branch- es in Oshawa."I think we've seen agrowth in the number of se- niors in the community, se-niors specifically thatcome to our facilities. We've seen gradual growth, but they're coming backvery slowly (since CO-VID-19)," said Black. She said the seniors cen-tres brought in more virtu-al programs during thepandemic to try to keep programs running formembers and also becamean essential service so that members would not feelcompletely isolated.Black said she's noticedin more recent years a "de- mand for culturally diverseprogramming for newcom-ers to the area. People are coming to a centre like oursand we want them to feellike they're coming home to what is familiar to them. How do we entice them, re-cruit them into our branch-es? It's not what we need to offer, it's what they needfrom us."I don't think we under-stood that up until now. We have to ask the right ques-tions and be open to not do-ing things the way you've always done them," shesaid.Another concern forsome older adults is outliv- ing their money. As theylive longer, there are wor-ries there may not beenough in pensions andother financial resourcesto survive into extreme oldage. Cravit of CARP saidthat's an issue raised by hismembers."The model of retire- ment our parents andgrandparents grew upwith, you started work in your early 20s, worked 40years, retired at 65 andlived another 10 or 12 years. But people are living much longer now, another 20 or30 years. Retirement, as weused to know it, is over. Some people who retiredare going back to work, part time or full time, be-cause they like to work or they have to work. And in-flation is deadly for peopleon a fixed income; there is pressure to bring in extraincome from somewhere,"Cravit said.Eggert, who worked 51 years at Gerdau Steel inWhitby, has no concernshimself about income, butunderstands it's a big con-cern for many older adults."I know lots of peoplewho are on the edge, and we try to do what we can do forthem. They're living on theedge. It's a sad thing to say.All you have to look is last two years of real estate andrentals, food banks are go-ing broke. It's a social prob- lem that needs to be ad-dressed," he said. STORY BEHIND THE STORY: Reporter TimKelly has looked over the2021 census, searching for what stands out as far asDurham Region is con-cerned. Pickering residents will head to the polls in October to vote for councillors and a new mayor. Susie Kockerscheidt/Metroland MUNICIPAL ELECTION MUNICIPAL ELECTIONTAKING PLACE INOCTOBER Thanks to an investmentfrom the federal govern-ment, a popular in trail in Pickering is set to open upagain by the end of the year.Jennifer O'Connell,Pickering-Uxbridge mem- ber of Parliament, recentlyannounced an investment of $198,000 to enhance Pick-ering's Altona Forest underthe Canada Community Re-vitalization Fund. "Growing up in Picker-ing, Altona Forest was al- ways one of my favourite lo-cations for hiking, and en-joying the outdoors withfriends and family," O'Con- nell said. "Altona Forestplays a vital role in the rec- reational, cultural and eco-logical landscapes of Pick-ering. This project willgreatly benefit our commu-nity by helping to revitalizeour vibrant natural spaces, and ensuring their use andenjoyment by future gener-ations."The project will support an upgrade of 1.6 kilometresof trail to allow for the re- opening of the multi-usetrail. This will involve theconstruction of a 380-metrenew accessible compacted-limestone-aggregate trailwith eight culverts to main- tain hydrologic processesin the forest.Altona Forest, operatedby the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority(TRCA), is an essential hab- itat for a wide variety ofplants and animals. It also serves as a community lo-cation for bird watching,cross-country skiing andhiking."Time in nature is an ex-cellent way to improve yourphysical and mental well- being," said John MacKen-zie, TRCA's chief executiveofficer. "This has becomeevident during the CO- VID-19 pandemic when peo-ple have been enjoying TRCA's trails more than ev-er. The investment to up- grade 1.6 km of existing trailwill allow for the reopeningof the entire multi-use trailin Altona Forest for thecommunity to use for yearsto come."The Waterfront Regen- eration Trust is also provid-ing support for the project, delivered through theTRCA. The project is set to becompleted by Dec. 31. While females have made some progress in the industry, there are still significant barri- ers — including attitudinal — that pre- vent women from embracing trades. “The construction trades are domi- nated by men and as such there are tremendous challenges for women entering them,” explained Craig Brockwell, director of external affairs for Support Ontario Youth. “Women need to overcome perceptions that they aren’t as strong as the men or as capable as the men in the performance of their jobs. As well, they need to overcome sex- ism and misogyny that they face day to day. “Nonetheless, more and more companies are actively seeking to hire under-represent- ed groups to their jobs and as such, there are more and more opportunities for young women to gain employment in formally male dominated jobs.” Statistics Canada states only five per cent of skilled trades workers in Canada are women. That number is small enough on its own, but when you factor in that this number includes industries like hairstyling and esthetics (where women make up 84 per cent of the workers), there is a significant under-representation of women in the skilled trades. Lisa Rizzato, chief executive officer at Centre for Skills Development, said she is seeing prog- ress being made based upon the composition of their training programs. “We know that skilled trades has been, and continues to be, a male-dominated environ- ment, but at Centre for Skills, we are seeing more and more women and other genders entering into our training programs with each passing year,” Rizzato said. “It hasn’t been an easy evolution to get the industries to seek and plan for balance, but the support and advocacy is there. Trade training programs targeted at recruiting women, newcomers, and Indigenous people have been around for some time, and ultimately the shift in societal norms acceptance and inclusiveness spills out across all areas of life, including the workplace and improving fair workplace practices around inclusion.” Kelly Hoey, executive director at Halton Industry Education Council — ApprenticeSearch.com, said her organization runs a peer mentoring program to help con- nect women in the trades. They’ve also con- ducted an “Exploring Apprenticeship Training and Support Needs for Under-represented Ontario Job Seekers” research project, which aims to understand the barriers under-repre- sented and equity-seeking groups face in the skilled trades “When asked if they had experienced any barriers at the onset of their skilled trades pathway, women in our focus group felt that they were never told about the opportunities in the skilled trades during school, and were steered towards other career pathways,” Hoey explained. “Common themes that appeared in the research on barriers to participation include a lack of networks and connections to find employment in the trades, a lack of flex- ibility with employers, and the unaffordabil- ity of the necessary startup and maintenance costs when pursuing a skilled trade pathway. “When asked what support they wished they had access to, to help alleviate some of these barriers, respondents highlighted finan- cial, emotional, and infrastructure-related sug- gestions. Having access to mentorship was one of the most requested supports. Those who did have access to mentorship on their skilled trade journey reported excellent experi- ences, and felt that they would not have been able to succeed without their mentor.” Overcoming barriers: Women under- represented in Ontario’s skilled trades WE NEED YOU !SKILLED TRADES dur h a m r e g i o n . c o m New s A d v e r t i s e r | Th u r s d a y , S e p t e m b e r 1 , 2 0 2 2 | 18 Maryam Afana-Bayoumi'sfamily has always loved welcom-ing guests to their home and feed-ing people — and now they have the chance to do that on a muchbigger scale with the opening ofSea Salt Seafood Cafe. The restaurant, located at 100Westney Rd. S. at the Ajax GO sta-tion, celebrated a grand openingAug. 10. "We're really excited to feedthe community," Afana-Bayoumisays, noting that this is Ontario'sfirst seafood restaurant com- bined with a coffee bar. The menu of seafood dishes is inspired by family recipes, in- cluding the seafood boil buckets, which are generating buzz on so-cial media. "Seafood drenched in butterysauce? This is what Durham hasbeen missing," one Facebookcommenter shared. The dish sees seafood, rice, po-tatoes and corn coated in warmbutter sauce flavoured with Ca- jun seasoning, lemon pepper or amix of both. Customers are en-couraged to don a plastic bib anddig in. The buckets can be custom-ized, or ordered from a set menuand include options like shrimp, mussels, lobster and snow crab."This is a very authentic,southern-style dish," says Afana-Bayoumi. "We're getting a lot of great feedback."The menu also includes lob-ster rolls, fish and chips, shrimptacos and shrimp-loaded fries — fried shrimp on a bed of friestopped with signature sauce and jalapeños. Afana-Bayoumi co-owns thebusiness with her father and says the idea started with her dreamof opening a coffee shop and hisdream of opening a seafood res-taurant. Sea Salt Seafood Cafe bringsboth ideas under one roof. In ad- dition to the seafood menu, a full-scale coffee bar will be up andrunning in September, serving an array of drinks and baked goods. The coffee bar will open at 7a.m., focusing on serving com-muters, while the kitchen will open later. "This is something that is needed ... There isn't a coffee shopat the GO station anymore, thereisn't one within walking dis- tance," said Afana-Bayoumi. Another unique aspect of theSea Salt Seafood Cafe menu isthat everything is halal. No pork or alcohol will beserved at the restaurant. For ex-ample, the sausages available to add to the seafood boil bucketsare made with beef. We want to hear about your fa-vourite places to eat in Durham!
