The museum has been staging the original playthat tells the story of Pick-ering's part in the 1837 Up-per Canada Rebellion, and in particular, about PeterMatthews — the man wholed this community's con-tingent of rebels — eachSeptember since 1995. Ithas become Durham Re-gion's longest-running play. Over the years, casthave performed for morethan 3,000 audience mem-bers that included descen- dants of the rebels. This year's show will run from Sept. 15 to Sept. 17,and from Sept. 22, to Sept.24, with seven show times each day. The play was created byKatrina Pyke and staged by volunteers in 1995. JohnEdmonds is the play's lon-gest-serving director, di-recting it since the eighth season."As soon as I got in-volved in 'A Spirit Walk,' Iwas totally immersed," he said. "I couldn't believe thecreativity that went into it,from the path it takes through the museum vil-lage, to the use of the can-dlelit luminaries." Intimate audience groups are led through thepaths and buildings of the museum site by the charac-ter Hannah Matthews, wid-ow of Peter Matthews. Sheweaves the story of opti- mism as settlers soughtrefuge from America afterthe Revolutionary War, themounting frustrations that led many to take up armsagainst the government 50years later, and the grim price her husband had topay for his treasonous act.For tickets — availablenow — and more informa- tion on the rebellion, visit- pickering.ca. Melly's is named afterMelanie Ruttle, she's the "why" behind the concept.Ruttle, 34, dreams of thelife she sees her sister andbrothers living — working, going places, meeting peo-ple. "I want to be a part of ev- erything, just like every-body else. A part of life," shesays. Down syndrome meant Ruttle encountered barriersto finding a job — but Mel-ly's has changed that. Now, Ruttle is in her elementgreeting customers, makingdrinks, ringing up orders. "It's so wonderful," she says. "I really love it."The struggle to find a jobis something most of the ca- fe's workers have experi-enced. Quadre McFarlane-Wil-son, 22, says prior to start- ing at Melly's, his job searchwas met with frustratingdead ends. "A lot of places wouldn'ttake me, wouldn't take any-one who is living with au-tism like me," he says. "If you come here, they'll teachyou and they'll get youwhere you want to get."Courtney McCready pre- viously worked at an arenaconcession stand but lostthat job during COVID-19 and came up empty-handedtrying to find somethingelse. At Melly's she makes cof- fee, cashes people out andsays her favourite new skillis steaming milk. "It's a very friendly place.A lot of amazing peoplework here," McCready says. Adults with intellectualand developmental disabil- ities are chronically unem-ployed in Canada, despitebringing many sought af-ter qualities to the work- place.Statistics show 59 percent of those with disabili- ties in Canada are em-ployed, compared with 80per cent of the general pop-ulation. For people with in- tellectual and developmen-tal disabilities, that numberdrops to 25 per cent. Data from Ready, Willingand Able — an initiativethat helps Canadian busi-nesses build an inclusive workplace for people withan intellectual disability orautism — shows many em-ployers rate people hired through the program as bet-ter than average when itcomes to skills like punctu- ality, attendance, productiv-ity, work attitude, gettingalong with co-workers andcontributing to positive mo- rale. Oshawa resident WendyDupont knows first hand how difficult the job searchcan be for adults like herdaughter Melissa, 31, who has autism as well as speechdyspraxia. After high school, Melis-sa attended local day pro-grams, but grew bored ofthem. Her mom says some were like "glorified day-cares." What Melissa wanted was a job. She sent out re-sumes and landed some in-terviews, but couldn't find aplace willing to give her a chance. Melissa has now workedat Melly's for about month, and loves it. She says her fa-vourite task is ringing in or-ders using the point-of-salesystem. Dupont describes the op-portunity as "life-changing"for her daughter. "She is thriving there be- yond my expectations. Shewakes up excited to gothere, she's more talkative about her day," she says."There needs to be moreplaces like this."The training program at Melly's Workplace includes16 modules covering every-thing from customer ser- vice and teamwork to mer-chandizing and food safety. Each trainee is assessed to expand the program atMelly's to include transi-tioning café employees tojobs with partnered local businesses, with Melly's as-sisting with job training, mentorship, and followupsupport. STORY BEHIND THESTORY: People with disa- bilities face higher levels ofunemployment than thegeneral population — andfor those with intellectual or developmental disabilities, the prospects are even moredaunting. Families and advocates have long calledfor programs that provide abridge to meaningful, sus-tainable employment. at the beginning of the pro-gram to determine theirneeds and provide a cus-tomized training approach. Megan Woodley and Mi-kaela Kauffeldt are learn-ing and development coach-es at Melly's Workplace —they say the program teach-es employment skills thatare needed in the café, but will also be a benefit for fu-ture jobs. In the short time the pro-gram has been running, Kauffeldt says so muchgrowth is already evident. "Their maturity, their professionalism has reallygrown. Their parents orfriends or family will comein and say how much they notice a difference," shesays. "I want people to knowthat this is one of the most amazing places I've everbeen."In the future, the goal is NEWS Continued from page 1 CAFE PROGRAM TEACHES EMPLOYMENT SKILLS SCAN THIS CODE to see more Durham news. Do not stand at my grave and weep, I am not there, I do not sleep, I am a thousand winds that blow, I am the diamond glint on snow, I am the sunlight on ripened grain, I am the gentle autumn’s rain. When you awaken in the morning hush, I am the swift uplifting rush, of quiet birds in circled flight, I am the soft stars that shine at night. Do not stand at my grave and cry, I am not there, I did not die. A wonderful mother, woman and aide, one who was better God never made; a wonderful worker, so loyal and true, one in a million - that mother was you. Just in your judgment, always right; honest and liberal, ever upright; loved by your friends and all whom you knew. Our wonderful mother - that mother was you. Always so good, unselfish and kind none on this earth your equal I’ll find. Honorable and true in all your ways, loving and faithful to the end of your days, honest and liberal, ever upright, just in your judgment, always right. Do not standat my grave and weep, I am not there, I do not sleep. Do not stand at my grave and cry, I am not there, I did not die.
