Lisa Bow- er. "It leads to questions about, could this tragedy have been pre- vented had there been a system inplace?"Bower helped bring forward a motion that was passed by Ajax council on June 20, calling on theprovince to review the currentAmber Alert program and crite-ria to include missing and at-risk vulnerable persons, or establisha new program. Barbecue season is here, and a new Indian takeoutspot in Ajax has you coveredif you're looking to grill something a little more ex-citing than burgers.Bollywood Flames re-cently opened at 1901 Har- wood Ave. N., serving upauthentic Indian dishes —and stocking speciallymarinated meats that cus-tomers can pick up to grillthemselves. "The marinated meats are really hot right now,"says Muzzy Shaikh, mar-keting manager for Bolly-wood Flames. "Now that summer is here, people arebarbecuing outside, it's camping season, this issomething you can takewith you that's different."Meats are marinated with Kitchen Guerrillasauces and include optionslike tandoori chicken, Ko-rean ribs, Tamil fire ribs,Haryali chicken, tandooribeef ribs, tandoori chickenwings and chicken seekh kebabs.Bollywood Flamesopened this spring, offer-ing a menu of dishes devel- oped and prepared by chefsfrom Punjab. You can find chaat, cur-ries, naan, wraps, samosas, biryanis and barbecuedmeats. Popular options includepaneer tikka, bonelesschicken biryani, butterchicken and garlic naan — the naan is more a foot longwith a generous dose of but-ter, garlic and coriander. "I have seen reviewsfrom people who say thisreminds them of home, they leave messages in Punjabi for the chefs,"Shaikh says. True to its name, every-thing at Bollywood Flamesis a nod to Bollywood cul-ture, from the music and colours to a giant Insta-grammable mural of Bolly-wood stars."It has a lot of personal- ity," says Shaikh. "We'reputting out really goodquality food and we want people in Ajax to try us. Wewant to become a very es-tablished business in thecommunity." We want to hear aboutyour favourite places to eat and drink in Durham! Oldfavourites, hidden gems, newrestaurants opening, awe-some food trucks — send your great eats to reporterJillian Follert at jfoll-ert@durhamregion.com. FOOD AND DRINK BOLLYWOOD VIBES IN AJAX Bollywood Flames' chef Rashpal Singh (left) holds a plate of tandoori chicken. Bollywood Flames recently opened in Ajax, serving authentic Indian food, including chaat and snacks, curries, biryanis and barbecue meats. Susie Kockerscheidt/Metroland JILLIAN FOLLERT jfollert@ durhamregion.com BOLLYWOOD FLAMES 1901 Harwood Ave. N., Unit 26, Ajax, Ont. bollywoodflames.ca facebook.com/ bollywoodflames.ca @bollywoodflames.ca 905-426-1700 Draven Graham, 11,went missing on June 12.He was spotted on video surveillance but search ef-forts recovered only hisclothes until the next day, when his lifeless body wasfound in the Scugog River."I heard about it sixhours after he was report- ed missing," said SuziGuarrasi, an Ajax residentwho works to better thelives of those with autismand developmental disabil-ities."That's what really shocked me to begin with. Why didn't I get an alert?" An Amber Alert is onlyissued when a child is ab- ducted, therefore no offi-cial alarm was launchedwhen Draven left his home. Community memberswho were aware of Dra-ven's situation did help search, including Guarra- si. She, along with her hus-band and other familieswho have children on theautism spectrum, found babysitters for their ownkids and took to Lindsay tohelp search for the boy. Guarrasi has a nine-year-old son, Frankie, whohas autism and is non-ver-bal. She said he can "easily elope within the blink of aneye." Many children withautism tend to "elope," orquickly venture out ontheir own, a worry for par-ents since these childrenoften do not understand danger the same way theirtypically developing peerswould."Any child that's miss- ing, of course it's impor-tant, but especially when achild is non-verbal or de- layed, that second a child isgone we need everyone tolook for them," Guarrasi said. So, she created an on-line petition on change.orgseeking support for an alerting system, and isnearing her goal of 5,000signatures. "We are calling on the Ontario government andthe Ontario Provincial Po-lice to take immediate ac- tion on reviewing their pol-icies and procedures onalerts," the petition said.A Hamilton woman also created a similar petition- calling for a "DravenAlert" and has collectednearly 90,000 signatures so far, with a goal of 150,000.Petition starter Kat Reidhas received permission from Draven's family to usehis name."No parent should haveto bury their child, and I understand that bad thingshappen, but this time itcould easily have been pre- vented," Reid said in herpetition. She said people were fishing at the river Draven was found in, during thetime he entered the water. "They were right there," she wrote. "If this alert hadalready been created, theywould have gotten a mes-sage soon after he went missing, instead of notfinding out until hours lat-er." Guarassi hopes thesepetitions along with mo-tions by municipal coun-cils, will encourage provin- cial politicians to take thenecessary steps to evokechange."It's so important to work with the governmentand the OPP and just en-sure that (something posi- tive comes from this) beau-tiful face and tragic story,"she said.Guarassi had contacted Ward 2 regional Coun. Ster-ling Lee asking for his sup-port. "I think it's very sad, very tragic and whateverwe can do to not let this happen again, I think we should do," he said at thecouncil meeting.Oshawa, Scugog and Brock councils havepassed similar motions.Pickering Ward 3 cityCoun. Shaheen Butt said in June he would bring for-ward a similar motion atthe next council meeting. "We're seeing more andmore families with autism, and the supports for thesefamilies are few and far be- tween," Lee said. "But thisone is a no-brainer."Find Guarrasi's petitionby searching "We are fail- ing our vulnerable chil-dren in our communities"on change.org. STORY BEHIND THESTORY: When Ajax coun-cil passed a motion calling on the provincial govern-ment to create an alertingsystem for vulnerable indi- viduals, Durhamregion-.com talked to people push-ing for change. HATTLMANN, Sidney ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ Today we announce the sad passing of an incredible man, Sid Hattlmann on July 9, 2022, at the age of 83. Sidney or "Zednek" from his native Czech background was a loving husband, father, brother, and friend to all. He was the owner of a successful commercial construction entrepreneurship for many years.
