An Ajax man is sacrific-ing his body voluntarily.Alexander Witte is plan- ning to run four miles ev-ery four hours for 48 hoursfrom June 24 to 26 whileraising money for the Hos- pital for Sick Children."I've been doing this pro-gram for the last 55 days or so and then I kind of fin-ished off the program; I'mgoing to be completing an-other challenge of running four miles every four hoursfor 48 hours," he said."To me, it's a perfect re-presentation of being a typ- ical 48-hour period for achild in hospital. My broth-er, for example, they had to be woken up every fourhours to do a test, a needle, medication, what have you," Witte noted. His brother Ethan spent a lot of his life at SickKids, suffering from chronic in-testinal pseudo-obstruc- tion (CIP), a rare disorderin which intestinal nerveor muscle problems pre- vent food, fluid, and airfrom moving through the stomach and intestines.Ethan was born Aug. 15,2000 and died on Feb. 5, 2010. Witte noted Ethanspent most of his nineyears living on floor 6A at SickKids."Ethan's story of life isone of true strength, perse-verance, Bravery and Cour- age," Witte wrote on his Go-FundMe page. "Ethan gotup everyday, despite EV- ERYTHING, and lived life tothe fullest! There was noth-ing or no one who couldBREAK the joy and passion for life that he lived with EV-ERYDAY. Ethan will foreverand always be my hero." The running programWitte has been doing iscalled 75Hard."To me it's just a good re- presentation of having todo something hard and en-during something that'shard, even if you don't want to at all hours of the day,"he added. He's going to be running a route in his neighbour-hood in the Old HarwoodAvenue area. Anyone who wants to do a run with himcan meet him at theMcLean Community Cen-tre on Magill Drive. It takes him about 40minutes to run four miles.Witte and his wife Ra- chel have a son, Oliver, whois seven months old.His son is "what drove"him to start the 75-day pro- gram."Just to try and bettermyself and set a good ex- ample for him. To be a bet-ter father," he said. He'll start running onFriday, June 24 at 8 p.m. and his final run will be onSunday, June 26, also at 8p.m.His original goal was $1,000, but he has alreadyraised more than $2,600.To donate, visit www.go- fundme.com/f/bravery-through-courage-in-sup-port-of-sickkids. Alexander is raising money for the Hospital for Sick Kids Children by doing a four-mile run every four hours for 48 hours. Alexander's brother spent a lot of time at SickKids and died when he was nine. Susie Kockerscheidt/Metroland COMMUNITY voiced their opinions. Those meetings are there (so) we can take the inputand try to integrate that in-to a proposal that makessense for everybody." The plan consists of tworesidential towers — 25 and31 storeys — containing 580 dwelling units, connectedby a four-storey podiumwith 1,532 square metres ofgrade-related commercial space. The plan includes464 parking spaces for resi-dents, 87 spots for visitorsand retail/commercial customers, and 290 bicyclespaces."Look at the traffic is- sues, the infrastructure is-sues ... and they're going tolose all the business," saidresident David Steele. The location currentlyconsists of a commercialplaza with businesses in- cluding the popular Bru-no's Signature."And the plaza's in good shape," Steele said. Siskind noted this is arezoning applicationwhich means the develop- ment will not be built formany years.Resident Oliver Rohn isconcerned about a lack of street-level parkingplanned for the towers. "These are small busi- nesses," he said. "If it'smade inconvenient to shopthere then people will go toFarmboy or Walmart — the bigger stores. The localbusinesses are going to besqueezed out."Siskind noted business- es will be offered space inthe new building and theirlong-term leases will be ho- noured. He said shadow impacts— a major concern — willbe minimal, and traffic consultants are puttingstudies together. He hopesBus Rapid Transit will help alleviate traffic pressure.Nilesh Surti, City ofPickering's manager of ur- ban design and develop- ment review, said this pro-posal won't likely come be-fore the planning and de- velopment committee until2023.Residents feel this rede-velopment will set a new precedent for the area, espe-cially if an amendment tothe Pickering Official Planreceives approval from Dur-ham Regional councilIt received Pickeringcouncil approval in Janu- ary. OPA (Official PlanAmendment) 38, the Kings-ton Road Corridor Intensi- fication plan, is meant toguide redevelopment of thelands generally located along Kingston Road andon the east side of BrockRoad, between Highway 401and Kingston Road. According to staff, newpolicies put forwardthrough OPA 38 will pro- mote land uses and build-ing designs that are easilyaccessed by walking or public transit, are environ- mentally friendly, and en-able a mix of residentialand commercial uses. "The plan is really forthe next 20 to 25 years," saidDean Jacobs, Pickering'smanager of policy and geo- matics. But to residents, OPA 38means Kingston Road willresemble Mississauga morethan the Pickering theylove.Rohn believes if it's ap- proved, OPA 38 opens thedoor for all plazas onKingston Road between Al-tona and Brock Roads to be redeveloped into large tow-ers.Council will eventually implement the changesthrough a zoning bylawand council has directedstaff to create a public en- gagement strategy on that."We plan on initiatingthat process as soon as we have final decision on the re-gion of OPA 38," Dean said.Rohn is also a member of Our Pickering. Thegroup was formed shortlyafter a local realtor's videoon 75 towers being planned for Pickering was released.Surti stressed "The bulkof the applications ... are long-term plans that maycome to fruition or may notcome to fruition. And themajority of them, we have not made any decisions on."Rohn understands thepurpose of OPA 38 is tomeet density mandates bythe provincial governmentbut he said it's "short sight-ed," planning for skyscrap- ers instead of low rises, midrises, or developments thatare suitable for communi-ties that have single-family homes nearby.Siskind believes this isan ideal redevelopment for Pickering, one in the city'sgateway and surroundedby commercial uses, andone that can help address the housing crisis."Right now the form ofhousing that is most afford- able for residents are mi-drise and highrise," hesaid. This newmeasure will replace thecurrent three-way inter-section. • The committee ap-proved a new plan to namemore streets after veteransin Pickering. "We have a lack of streetnames here in Pickering af-ter our veterans," said Ward 3 regional councillorDavid Pickles.Among other minormatters, the amendments establish requirements toselect street names in rela- tion to war veterans and the war dead and waivesthe fees for requests re-ceived from the Royal Ca-nadian Legion to add names to the city's reservelist. Pickles asked when thiscan be in place and staff said it should get startedlater this month.• The committee ap- proved a heritage demoli-tion permit for the formerWhitevale BlacksmithShop, which needs to come down due to its severe dete-rioration and structural in- stability. The shop is locat- ed at Whitevale Park, which is within the White-vale Heritage Conserva-tion District. The building, while notusable, contains evidenceof blacksmith work, suchas nails, metal fasteners, metal tiles, and more. "Where possible, the in-tention would be to salvage materials from this struc-ture where appropriate,"said Kyle Bentley, Picker-ing's director, city develop- ment and city building offi-cial. In 2018, two teachers with the DDSBteamed up to offer the board's first Englishcourse focused on Indigenous authors, as a pilot project. In 2019, the Kawartha Pine Ridge Dis-trict School Board — which includes pub-lic schools in Clarington — became one of the first boards in Ontario to replace thestandard Grade 11 English course with onefeaturing Indigenous voices, followed by the Durham Catholic District SchoolBoard in 2020. DDSB students say the ContemporaryFirst Nations, Métis, and Inuit Voices course is having a profound impact on them."I'm so glad I was able to experiencethis, it really opened up the floor for deeper conversations that are very, very uncom-fortable to have especially as a white per-son myself," says Riley Quick, a Grade 11student at Ajax High School. "It made me self-reflect on a lot of personal and...soci-etal issues."Johnathan Wright, also a student at Ajax High School, said the course made studentsfeel "empowered and encouraged them tobecome involved, not only in Indigenous is-sues, but also issues in human rights." Wright said the course taught studentsthat Indigenous issues are not somethingthat happened in the past — "it is current and ongoing," he said. DDSB student trustee De-Mario Know-les identifies as Indigenous and says theGrade 11 English course is a sign that things are changing for the better. "Throughout my 14 years in public edu-cation, unfortunately I've had very little exposure to my Indigenous culture," hesays. "As more Indigenous students comeinto our school board, when they see thatwe have this course that talks about their culture, I think that it will make them feellike they're seen, like they're heard."A DDSB report says 950 students took the First Nations, Métis and Inuit Contem-porary Voices course in quadmesters oneand two of this school year with 92 per centof students passing the course. INDIGENOUS GRADE 11 ENGLISH COURSE TO BE MANDATORY JILLIAN FOLLERT jfollert@durhamregion.com NEWS A Grade 11 English course focused on Indigenous authors and perspectives will be mandatory in all Durham District High Schools starting in September 2022. However, white is now carving out a choice spot. Particularly in the bathroom. Therefore, you may want to consider install- ing matte white faucets to update your bath- room. Why matte white? White is a timeless colour that’s elegant yet contemporary. It adds charm and character to the bathroom. The soft matte finish also comple- ments minimalist decor. How to arrange it? You can integrate white faucets with simple lines and unique, deli- cate ceramic tiles into a vanity unit. Additionally, opt for a glazed or open shower stall to make the best use of light. Moreover, you can coordinate white faucets with a pop of colour. For example, play with con- trast by combining white taps with black accents to create a chic, retro atmosphere. Gold ac- cents create a refined lustre appearance, while all-white finishes create a harmonious look. If you think all-white finishes will make your bathroom feel cold, warm up the space with wood or rattan accesso- ries and furniture. Visit your local home improvement stores to pick up a new white fau- cet with all the trim- mings. Loving husband of 62 years to Rita (predeceased). Amazing father to Denise Nolte (Harry) and Colm Caffrey (Laurie). Devoted Grandpa to Catherine Jones (Colin), Andrew Nolte (Kate) and Brynna Caffrey. Incredible great-grandpa to Jackson and Brooklyn Jones and Liam and Aurora Nolte. Dad passed away peacefully at Lakeridge Oshawa Hospital on the evening of June 17, 2022. Dad left Dublin in 1957 to forge a new life in Canada. Mom followed him out to Canada six months later. They got married in 1959 and started their family. He had a passion for equal rights and justice for everyone. His career started with the Labour Board, then The Woman's Bureau then finally the Ontario Human Rights Commission. He was involved in writing legislation and laws that are still the foundation of the Ontario Human Rights Code today. Here are a few of Dad's achievements in his life: He was the founding President of the Pickering Hockey Association, a Tai Chi Master, he wrote three novels (unpublished), two screen plays and the lyrics and music for two albums. But he was most excited about golf and playing it with beloved Rita. With his guitar playing, piano playing and singing... the man could tell a story better than most. His songs and words will stay with his children, grandchildren and great- grandchildren forever. We miss you but we know that you are on a golf course with Mom. Online condolences can be made at mceachniefuneral.ca MARTIN (nee Wiles), Norma Jean Elizabeth ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ Passed away peacefully at home on Friday, June 10, 2022 at 85 years of age. Norma will be fondly missed by many. At her request cremation has taken place and a private graveside service will be held in Brantford at a later date. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted with Beckett- Glaves Family Funeral Centre, 88 Brant Ave., Brantford, 519- 752-4331.
